THE SINGAPORE STRUCTURAL STEEL SOCIETY
The Singapore Structural Steel Society was formed with the objectives of constituting an association ofengineers, architects, industrialists and others concerned with, and interested in, the analysis, design, construction, research and other aspects of structural steels. The Society provides a forum for itsmembers, seminars, invited lectures, short courses, and publications etc. The Society aims to developa resource of the best and latest information on the science, engineering and technology of structuralsteel, and strives to promote the proper use of structural steel under appropriate circumstances, for thebenefit of the community and the region.
Since the inception, there has been an upsurge of interest in Singapore towards the consideration ofstructural steel as an alternative material of construction. The Society has been very active in bringingtogether all those involved in research, teaching, design, fabrication, manufacture and construction ofsteel structures in the region. This is made possible through the organisation of seminars, evening talksand publication of quarterly newsletters and annual journals. The Society has also co-sponsored anumber of international and regional conferences and has arranged workshops and short courses onvarious aspects of steel structures. The Structural Steel Fabricators Accreditation Scheme developedby the Society with the full support of the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore waslaunched in November 2002, with the aim of improving quality, safety standards and raising theprofessionalism of the industry.
To bring closer new research findings and latest developments in steel construction around the world tomembers of the Society, it is our tradition to invite prominent guest speakers to deliver our annuallectures.

Lindsay Holland is director of Lindsay Holland Pty Ltd Architects,an architectural practice currently engaged in medium scalecommercial and residential projects throughout Melbourne andregional Victoria.
The practice has an acknowledged skill in the utilisation of steelstructurally and as cladding with specific emphasis on the placeand importance of carefully considered exposed detailing. In recentyears there is an increasing interest in the use of steel andsustainability at both an architectural and urban scale.
The practice, formed in the mid-eighties, has received architecturalawards on a regular basis since then, most recently for the steel
framed Connolly Residence which received the 2002 RAIA Desbrowe Annear Award for ResidentialBuildings and BHP ‘Use of Steel’ Award.
Lindsay Holland maintains ongoing links with RMIT University, being involved in all levels of designeducation in a studio environment, from lower level studios to design thesis supervision.
Since 2002 the practice has undertaken a range of projects in south eastern China, working bothindependently and in collaboration with architectural and planning practices in Shanghai and Guangzhou/Xiamen.

Soft Steel
Steel frame houses occupy often unique moments in the history of the modern house. Theysuggest an optimism and progressive intention often admired but seldom influential in anybroader sense.
They are true prototypes, often exploring structural principles and construction systems ororganisations outside conventional building practices and professional relationships.
Through a process of global and local reflections, a matrix of projects emerges, projects whichstill lie at the core of an experimental architecture.
This lecture will examine historically distant and geographically disparate precedents and howthey have informed the creation of several completed steel frame houses within my practice, together with more recent speculative projects under conceptual development.
These houses are influenced by both these global precedents yet rooted in a local condition, richin its architectural cultural diversity and traditions.
The houses will be examined in detail, particularly their structural systems and details, and theprofessional and construction environment in which they are realised.
