    Congregation Sinai Welcomes Peri Smilow

Noted Singer Songwriter Peri Smilowwill present a concert on Sunday, March 7, at11:00 am. Peri has just released her latest al-bum, "Blessings", which she performed at therecent Union for Reform Judaism Biennial con-vention, receiving enthusiastic responses.

We've been fortunate to have Peri per-

form at Sinai several times in the past. Whileour religious school families are especially in-vited to attend, Peri's music is far from juvenile;she deals with serious topics and evocativeJewish texts through a blend of folk, folk-rock,and world music. Be sure to make plans to joinus!

Some years ago, I tuned into our local Public Radiostation to hear a standup comic doing a Lenny Bruce routine. The voice was familiar and, with a start, I realized it was RabbiJay Brickman, Sinais rabbi emeritus. I was surprised, but not

by much. I already knew that Rabbi Brickman was a man ofmany talents, who exemplifies the messagefound in the Psalms: Teach us to number our

days that we may acquire a heart of wisdom.Jay Brickman came to Sinai as its first

rabbi when services were still being held in achurch. Five years later, he led our congregation through the construction and dedication of ourbeautiful building. He initiated a weekly familyservice to begin the Sunday morning religiousschool program. Indeed, Jay worked to insure thateducation was a primary focus at Sinai, both for

children and adults.Personally, I consider Jay to be a role model for a

healthy retirement. In contrast with many retiring rabbinic col-leagues, who discover that their lives are quite empty without the day to day demands of the work, Jays outside interests

have always been many and varied, and have continued tokeep him active and vital in his eighty sixth year. Jay continues

to teach at Sinai, the JCC, UWM, and, during the summer, upin Door County. His continuing interest in Jungian Psychol-ogy and dream interpretation draw many to his courses. Hecontinues to practice Tai Chi and work out. We should all beso healthy! In addition, Jay and Rita attend many activities at

Sinai and Jay is always just a phone call awaywhen I need his advice or counsel.

Over the years, Jay has written threebooks. They consist of individual essays on a widerange of topics. His latest has just been pub-lished. Its called Poetry Doodles and it contains

an added twist: in addition to Jays essays, local

artist JoAnna Peohlmann did the design and lay-out, adorning the cover and pages with whimsicalline drawings. It is a delightful read.

To celebrate the publication of Jays lat-

est book, we are hosting an author visit andbook signing at Sinai on Sunday morning, March 14th.

There will be music and food. We hope youll be able to join

us for what I know will be a terrific morning. And if were

lucky well get Rabbi Brickman to do his Lenny Bruce rou-

    tine!

I was surprised to learn, during a discussion at ourSaturday morning services, how many of those present haddifficulty with the Christmas season. I have always enjoyedthis time of year. I was raised in a non-Orthodox all-Jewish neighborhood in New York City. We all appre-ciated Christmas. Although no one had a Christmas tree in their apartment, there was a beautifullydecorated tree in the building lobby. We happilyparticipated in the singing of Christmas carols inschool, while avoiding enunciating words likeChrist. I still enjoy the Christmas music. Young

and old delighted in watching the moving displaysin Department Store windows. When I was little, Iwas always treated to at least one trip downtown tosit on Santas lap. My favorite story, growing up, was Dickens

Christmas Carol. At my daughters suggestion I recently

watched A Christmas Story on T.V., and almost squealed

with delight. The birth of Reform Judaism was an indirect conse-

    Reflections

    Sinai's Resident Theological Doodler...

Santaquence of the French Revolution, which promised liberty, freedom, equality, to all citizens. The response of someJews to emancipation was to abandon Judaism and com-

pletely assimilate. Others reacted by becomingmore Orthodox and withdrawing from gentile con- tacts to avoid the loss of Jewish identity. ReformJudaism asserted, then as now, that one could beboth a loyal Jew and a participant in the life of thelarger community.

I am concerned about church and stateissues, and object to religious symbols like thecross and crche being displayed on publicgrounds. But much of the Christmas apparatus,as Orthodox Christians never fail to remind us, like

Santa, decorations, and Rudolph, are quite secular. Youwouldnt want your non-Jewish neighbor to be lighting Cha-nukah candles, but you cant object to their playing with

    dreydels or eating potato latkes.

In 1986, my mom helped me get dressed for schoolone morning in a stunning get-up of ruffled white sweatshirtmaterial decorated with sparkly pink hearts. The skirt andtop combo paired nicely with ballet-pink tights, patent leatherMary Janes, and some kind of side ponytail. (It was the 80s,after all!) Into Miss As first grade classroom I went, knowing

that my mom was coming to get my brother and me early. Itwas erev Passover, and we were heading to mygrandpa and grandma in Brooklyn for our se-der.

I remember so many things about theeight Passovers I spent at my grandfathers

house in Brooklyn. The way the whole apart-ment building smelled like matzah ball soup;the mumbling of my grandfather as he ferventlyread every single word in the Haggadah; the

Punky Brewster doll that I got as a gift for find-ing the afikomen (which my grandpa always hidunder the tablecloth beneath his leftarm!)...Like so many families, Pesach was fullof traditions for us, and we maintained all ofthem after my grandfather died when I was eight and the se-der moved to our house on Long Island.

Every year, in a feverish attempt to get our houseready for Passover - the chametz cleaned out, the dishes outof storage, the table set - every year my favorite part ofPesach was (and still is!) filling the seder plate with the sym-bolic foods of the story. My mother would quiz me on whateach one meant, as we filled the plate together. When it

came to putting matzot in our matzah cover, my mother put the three required matzot into our beautiful white matzahcover, and one more on the table underneath it. My grandfa-ther did the same thing.

Year after year, first my grandfather and then mymother, drew our attention to the fourth matzah. After weread the Arameic text reminding us that this is the bread thatshould remind us of our Exodus, they would both explain thateven now, not all Jews are free. This fourth matzah, they

would say, is for the Jews in the Soviet Union. Someday,

may they be free to have seders like we do. While I assure

you that as a little girl in Plainview, NY, this was just astory...we added that fourth matzah every single year. Nei- ther my grandfather nor my mother ever forgot to put it on

    Page 3March/April 2010

the table. Even as we added Miriams cup and oranges to

our seder, the fourth matzah remained. The first year of cantorial school, I had an incredible

opportunity to visit Belarus during Pesach. Together with arabbinic classmate, we traveled all over the country with theChief Reform Rabbi of Belarus, leading childrens program-

ming, discussions, and seders. The budding-Jewish profes-sional in me crashed into that little girl in thatwhite dress with the pink hearts. Overwhelmedby a story and a memory, Marshall, my class-mate, and I decided to add the fourth matzah toour seder table.

So, we started the seder. We sang theorder. The children, who had been practicing formonths, chanted the four questions. We bangedon the tables as we sang ha lachma anya. As I

pulled back the cover on the matzah to explainwhat we had in front of us, I felt anxious. Idoubted our decision to add the fourth matzah. And then, committed to what Marshall and I haddecided, I explained and this fourth matzah is for

you. I told them the story of my grandfathers adding the

fourth matzah. All of our eyes filled with tears - each tear adifferent story of what had come before. I cried because itwas amazing to see, with my own eyes, that these Jews, forwhom I had remembered every Pesach of my childhood, werenow celebrating Passover. And I was privileged enough tocelebrate too.

The next few years, I left the fourth matzah off our

seder table. It seemed to be holding on to tradition, morethan a call to action and remembrance. But recently, I put itback on the table. Why? This story is, sadly, never-ending.There are Jews who are not wholly free to practice around theworld; because of their geography, because of their familiesand the decisions they have made...Perhaps we can all addthat fourth matzah to our seder tables this year, if only as areminder that we share our story, and our table, with Jews allover the world, through the generations.

May you and your families have a wonderful Pesach, full of memories in the making, and joy in celebrating ourcollective story as a people. Chag Kasher vSameach!

    The Fourth Matzah

Special Israeli Speaker: Yisrael NeemanFriday night, April 16 and Saturday evening April 17, Congregation Sinai will have the privilege of learning from Yisrael Ne eman.

During the Learning Shabbat service he will share his research and experience about the formation of Jew-

ish communities in Israel. He will compare this process with what happens in the United States. On Satur-

day, a more serious topic about the enemies of Israel (Hamas, Hesbolah, etc.) will be the topic. Yisrael

Neeman has done extensive research into the compacts of these groups and their approach to Israel.

More information will follow with specific details for Saturday, but both of these programs are certain to be

filled with learning and challenges to our intellect. Articles that have been published will be available from

Dr. Blumberg or the congregational office for those who are interested.

Primary GradesFor our youngest learners, enacting the Exodus from

Egypt, seeing the ancient writings at the museum, and celebratingwith our Jewish community at Israels Birthday celebration are all

ways of making them aware of our connection to the past. Theseconnections of past and present should be presented in ways thatinvolve their senses. What foods do we eat at Passover, how arethose foods like what we find in Israel today? What is in an IsraeliCharosets (dates, or-anges, figs!) Would the Jews have carrieda flag like the Israelif lag when theymarched in the de-sert?

    Read the bookAnd Shirah Imagined

    by Giora Carmi, or

Chicken Man by Mi-chelle Edwards. Have them imagine being inIsrael long ago, andworking on a Kibbutz today. Most of all, tell them that they arecelebrating what theirgreat, great, greatgrandparents cele-brated! And have fun!

    TeensTeens might

be excited by the idea that even long ago, there were conflictswith how one lived andcelebrated the holydays. The Rabbis cre-ated a Pesach Sheni(2nd Passover) forthose who were unable to celebrate Passoverat its regular time. It is also called Pesach Katan the

small Passover. The Biblical text tells ofthis commemoration in Numbers 9:9-13,

one month after the regular date on the14th of Iyar. While in the Biblical times, most problems recorded were illness, ritual impurity, or travel, the studentsmight consider what would make this anecessity for today?

When the teens visit the DeadSea Scrolls exhibit, they might try to find

the section in Numbers where the second Passover isfound. If they cannot find it on the tour, perhaps they mightask the curators. Then they could compare what they sawto a Torah today or to a Hebrew English Bible.

AdultsI would suggest that adultsmake a commitment to attend1) a seder, 2) Yom HaShoah,3) Yom Haatzmaut and either4)Yom Yerushalayim or aPesach Sheni service at anOrthodox Shul. Adults shouldeither record their thoughts ormeet in small groups to dis-cuss the experiences. Whenthey view the Dead Sea Scroll

exhibit, they could also discuss what they found most meaningful. As Adults, we go through our own passages and some-

times time goes fast and sometimes it drags by. These com

memorations help us to connect to time, past, present and future. For adults, I would highly recommend reading one of the

many excellent books on Jewish History that are available in theSinai Library. I know that I personally loved Abba Ebans recount-

ing of our history, but there are many others.Lastly, I suggest that adults ask themselves what the role

God plays in their life and their history. Has that role changed? What would they like it to be? The connection of our people toeach other, to our land and story, and to God has sustained Jews throughout these centuries. Learning about it may add joy andhope to their lives.

Intermediate GradesThe Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit can connect to Pass-

over vividly in the minds of our intermediate grades. Forexample, the Jews made their exodus in the desert and the scrolls were found in the desert, Moses received theTorah at Mount Sinai and the Dead Sea scrolls were hid-den in caves near the mountains around the Dead Sea(called the Judean Hills, but still, small mountains) and

the men and women of theIsraeli Defense Forces weresworn in atop of Masada, where today, some Jewishchildren celebrate their Bnai

Mitzah. Connections! Havethe students brain storm otherconnections between theirlives and Jewish history. You could also show and dis-

cuss the film My Exo-dus (Torah Aura) which gives

personal accounts of the Exo-dus. Have the students write their own stories. Imagine i they had found the Dead SeaScrolls. What do they think the role of God is in making these connections betweepast and present?

Our Holiday, Our History, OurselvesDr. Sherry H. Blumberg, Director of Lifelong Jewish LearningMarch Aprils Jewish Celebrations offer us an insight into

the important role that Jewish History plays in our lives today.Passover, at the end of March, asks us to relive our formation as apeople over 3000 years ago. Yom Haatzmaut asks us to com-

memorate our formation as a political state, a homeland. In be- tween, we remember the suffering of the Shoah and other mo-

ments when Jews fought to survive, such as Yom Yerushalayim. And, finally at the end of April, we come toPesach Sheni, on April 28th, where peoplewho could not celebrate Passover at thecorrect time can celebrate it later -- thepractical application of Jewish traditionbased on our historical reality. Most of all,we remember, retell, recall and keep aliveour story. Each year we participate in thismemory, we create new memories for ourfuture.

What can all these dates andcelebrations mean for us today? For one

thing, they are a special way we connectand transcend the every day aspects of our lives and grow to un-derstand that we are part of an ancient, yet ever evolving people. Each of these events can connect us to each other, our families, our communities and to God. We can find meaning in the spiri-tual, historical, and communal aspects of our past and choose, asLiberal Jews, to make these celebrations and commemorationsour own. These are some ideas to connect each age group.

    Calling all bak-

ers! The Women ofSinai will be creating aspecial Oneg Shabbatin honor of the Bnei

Mitzvah of Eli andJacob Cohen. If youdlike to bake, pleasee m a i l m e a [email protected]. Theboys enjoy just about everything, so lets honor them and

create one of our magnificent sweet tables. The bakery is for the conclusion of services on March 12th, so let me knowwhat your specialty is and I will add you to my list. I look

forward to hearing from you. Many thanks to those of you who returned yourdues envelopes. Sadly, we havent heard from some of you

who were part of our fold last year. Perhaps there is an en-velope underneath a pile of papers. I know this feeling well.Consider all that would not happen at Sinai if dues were notcollected. No student Bnei Mitzvah bags, no support of thePurim carnival, no school picnics. No special onegs, noWeight Watchers, no yoga. Please send in your dues and ifyouve lost your envelope, let me know and Ill get a new one

to you. With sadness, I must tell you that Mah Jongg will be

ending. We have taught so many of you over the years. I seemany of you in coffee shops or bookstores playing with oth-

ers. Our numbers have dwindled, so we will be shutting thedoors on Wednesday nights.

Weight Watchers does continue with our groupgrowing. I heard on the Today Show, that you can go to TacoBell and get a lower calorie Burrito, or go to McDonalds andorder a kids hamburger. Perhaps this is your style of weightloss. If it is notconsider joining our group. We have more

fun than you can imagine! Our fearless leader Rosalie Leibalways has words of encouragement, so let me know if youare interested. Again my email address is [email protected] you!Laura Waisbren

    Whats Greening at Sinai

    Sinai Social Action

Greening of Sinai visited the Mini U program for TuBShevat and showed the students two ways to recycle plas-

tic bags: knitting plarn and sewing bags made with Mylar.

We would be happy to teach these crafts to congregants ifthere is interest.

Coming soon, we will be gearing up for our Sukkahgarden project. Let us know if you are interested in joining in these projects by contacting Deb Schermer @[email protected].

Greening of Sinaiis charged with raising awarenessof environmental issues and helping Sinai become as green

as possible. We want to hear your ideas, interests and mus-ings.

Tip of the monthCelebrate Earth Day by changing your light bulbs.

There are now highly efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs

    Social Action Committee

One generation goes and another generation comes; but the Earth remains forever. (Kohelet 1:4)(CFLs) that last for years, use a third of the energy of regularbulbs and actually produce more light. Look for the govern-ment's ENERGY STAR label, which means the bulb has been tested for quality and efficiency. While each ENERGY STARqualified bulb can cost more initially - anywhere from $4 to$15 a piece - remember that there are two price tags: whatyou pay at the register and what you pay in energy costs over the bulb's lifetime. You may pay more up front, but you willactually save hundreds of dollars in your household budgetover the long term because of their long life. Five ENERGYSTAR light bulbs will save your household at least $150 over

their lifetime. (from Climate Change Solutions @ earth-day.net)

    Deb SchermerGreening of Sinai

Congregation Sinai is participating in the Jewish Lens

Program. Dr. Sherry Blumberg and Jennifer Saber, coordinator of

the Mini U program, attended the training sessions and will

    enable the 7-9th

graders at Sinai to participate. The program not

only includes photography, but also teaches a student how to

read a photograph. This knowledge is also applied to reading

Jewish texts. Anyone interested in the program can see the full

    curriculum in Dr. Blumbergs office.

If you answered yes to any of these,

then OSRUI is the place for you next
