Sinai Assisted Housing Foundation
Our mission is to enable families to move from homelessness to
independence by providing safe and affordable housing,
comprehensive social services and financial support.
From the President and the Executive Director
Our focus this past year was to explore ways to ensure that our alumni find affordable housing in safe and appropriate neighborhoods for at least five years after leaving Sinai House. We strengthened our relationships with Manna, Inc., and our property manager, Fred A. Smith Company, to provide more housing options for our alumni within D.C., so that the children do not have to change schools when they leave Sinai House. A job development component has been added to our program to help our residents increase their income. A former Sinai House resident related her moving story of overcoming drug addiction and homelessness at our Annual Sinai House Homes & Hearts Shabbat Service at Temple Sinai on December 16, 2016. She now works as a drug counselor and lives in Northeast D.C. with her two daughters. In June 2017, we were thrilled to welcome our new Assistant Program Director, Linda Dupree-Lopez. She has begun working closely with our Executive Director, Lucane LaFortune, to manage volunteers and assist with property management tasks. She also reaches out to former residents to assess their needs and ensure that they remain independent. Our hard-working families made significant strides this year. One of our residents purchased a home in Spring 2016. Another came to us about two years ago with her two young sons from Ethiopia seeking asylum. Her adult son was able to join the family last year and he quickly found a job. The family purchased a home in Summer 2017. One resident graduated from UDC with an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice. Another resident is training to be a certified yoga instructor. A tuition-assistance loan from Sinai House enabled a former resident to graduate from Trinity University with a Bachelor's Degree in Human Development. One of our current families is originally from Japan and survived domestic abuse. We are rising to the challenge of identifying and providing the additional resources needed to help this family to be safe and to thrive at Sinai House. Working with our educational specialist, child therapist and an attorney, we ensured a resident child diagnosed with autism was placed in an appropriate school. Charting the Path to Independence
Sinai House is devoted to providing a safe home for families who are experiencing displacement and housing insecurity, giving them the tools they need to achieve independence. The Sinai House Executive Director meets with each resident upon arrival to develop short and long term plans for each member of the family. Weekly meetings are held thereafter to adjust those plans to tackle life's unforeseen challenges. One of our current resident families was referred to us last year by the Domestic
Violence Resource Project (DVRP), which works to end domestic violence and sexual assault in Asian/Pacific Islander communities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. We rose to the challenge of providing the additional services needed by this family, including enhancing our building security, securing legal assistance, and finding an appropriate school for a special needs child. Regardless of the issues, Sinai House creates a space for entire families to heal and rebuild. We require a significant level of commitment from our residents. Adults must work full-time, or engage in a combination of part-time work and part-time school or job training (which Sinai House may help finance). The children must attend accredited daycare or an appropriate school, and a structured summer camp program (either a free program or a program for which Sinai House pays). Adults sign a contract acknowledging their obligation to abide by the rules, including paying a monthly stipend towards rent, to meet regularly with our staff, and to attend all programming including:
Financial Coaching, which is provided by an outside consultant who meets with the
residents in weekly group sessions and individually three times a month. The coach helps each
resident create a budget, understand her credit score and work to improve her financial status.
Tricia Davis Matching Savings Program, which requires residents to set aside a specified
amount each month, that we match on a 2:1 basis. Most residents leave Sinai House with
about $5,000 in savings.
Weekly Individual Therapy, provided by licensed therapists for current and former Sinai
House resident parents and children, as needed.
Education Coordination, provided by an outside consultant who administers an
educational assessment for each child and observes them in the classroom. Parents are
advised on the best school options and can receive assistance in advocating for their children
at school. Children who participate in the Good Grades program can receive financial
incentives for good grades, even after their families have graduated from Sinai House. We are
also now offering educational assessments for adult residents who request it.
Career Coaching, which was recently added, thanks to a grant from the Temple Social
Action Committee. A certified career coach has started working with our residents on
identifying and implementing achievable goals in order to find higher paying jobs and advance
their careers.

Gaining a Home and a Community
When a family moves into one of the four fully-furnished apartments at Sinai House, they gain
more than just housing -- they gain a community. Many residents form friendships and caring,
meaningful connections with the staff, board members, Temple Sinai members and the other
residents. Throughout the year, the community comes together to tutor, mentor, plan outings
for our residents and attend community events.
Mentoring: After going through a screening process, volunteers meet with adult or child
mentees on a monthly basis for unstructured activities after school or on weekends. The
relationship often continues after the family leaves Sinai House.
Tutoring: Volunteers meet with children twice a week at Sinai House to work on homework,
reading and math, and to play educational games.
Playtime: Volunteers come to Sinai House once
a week for a scheduled playtime of arts and
crafts, sports, board games, etc. Activities engage
children in both fine and gross motor skills and
allow them to utilize their imaginations.
Temple Sinai Men of Reform Judaism have
agreed to identify and fix or repair items in the
resident apartments and around the building in
the coming year, including finding and installing
appropriate kitchen cabinet replacements. They
also took the Sinai House families to see the
Washington Nationals take on the Cincinnati
Reds in June 2017.
Enrichment Activities: Throughout the year,
volunteers from Temple Sinai engage our children in fun activities, including baseball games,
festivals, and camping trips. We also ensure that all children are able to participate in summer
camp.
We've gone solar! Solar panels were installed on both of the buildings at no cost to Sinai House. D.C. Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU), New Columbia Energy and Direct Energy Solar provided and installed solar panels on our two buildings. (Direct Energy Solar's participation was the result of its relationship with Temple Sinai and its members.) Our residents, who pay their own utilities, have already saved $925 (7,207 kWh) since March 2017!

Our Wonderful Volunteers
Our volunteer tutors provided 3 children with 160 hours of tutoring
in math, reading and writing, and our volunteer mentors met with 6
of our current and former resident children. At the end of the school
year, all of our children advanced to the next grade. In addition to
our all-volunteer Board of Directors and our adult mentors, tutors
and playtime facilitators,
many Temple Sinai
Religious School students
choose a Bar or Bat
Mitzvah project to benefit
Sinai House. One student
came weekly last fall to
Sinai House with her mom
and transformed the
playroom. Another
student took portraits of
our current and former
resident families at our
Holiday Party and made a
beautiful album that she
gave to the families. An
arts and crafts session was
led by one student to
create decorations for our
Valentine's Day
celebration. A student who
regularly tutors one of our
Sinai House children also
helped prepare and serve
dinner at our Valentine's
Day celebration. Two
students held weekly bake
sales and created a
personal fundraising page
for the Tricia Davis 5K
Walk/Run that succeeded
in raising over $1,000 for
Sinai House!

Fundraising
We must raise about $200,000 each year to
support our program. These funds not only assist
our four resident families on their path to
independence, but also cover the services we
offer to our graduates, such as housing
placement guidance, job development, therapy,
and educational support. Over 40 families, including nearly 90 children have gone through our
program. Our Executive Director and Assistant Program Director reach out to former residents
to assess their needs and ensure that they remain independent. Many of our alumni attend our
annual summer pool party and December holiday celebration, and participate in the Tricia
Davis 5K race.
The weather was gorgeous on Mother's Day,
Sunday, May 14, 2017 as more than 370
registrants (including dogs!) and more than 300
donors and sponsors supported the Third Annual
Tricia Davis 5K Walk/Run. We raised nearly
$100,000 for Sinai House, surpassing last year's
event by about $20,000! At the award ceremony,
one current resident spoke on behalf of all the
residents, expressing their thanks for all the hard
work of the volunteers and the donations from the
community that support them on their journey to independence.
The Temple Sinai Social Action Committee awarded a grant of $9,600 to fund a Career
Pathways Program for current and alumni Sinai House residents. In addition to that grant and
the proceeds from the 5K, we received over $47,000 in grants from foundations and
corporations, over $31,000 from individuals, and over $6,500 from the United Way/Combined
Federal Campaign in 2016 - 2017.
