Gathering Drum with Hello Song
Shosholoza (Exploration)
Tideo Vocabulary: Tremelo Accent
Sally Go ‘Round The Sun
Shosholoza: Free play and exploration time on the large drum. Play with two hands, two fingers, scratches, circles, fists, swishes.
Tideo:• If this is not your first year of teaching SMR and you would like to use a new
hello or new goodbye song, explain to continuing parents and children that we have a new song for the new school year.
• Introduce the ukulele and “Tideo,” explaining the kids can sing the “O.”• Encourage the parents to tap on the children as the children tap on the drum. Say
“Tap, tap, tap…” as everyone plays the drum to encourage playing on the beat.• Accompany the song by strumming the beat to make it easier for the class to
keep the beat.• If the children are apprehensive to drum, you can suggest they, “go for a ride”
by putting their hands on top of their parent’s hands.• Demonstrate playing only on the “Tideos” for our hello song.• Sing the song with the “O” of “Tideo” sung high, then low. Add the guitar (only
strum on tideo with them).• Ask them to “tremolo” or play very quickly on the drum at the end of the song
followed by one loud beat at the end, an “accent.”• Sing each child’s name at least once.
Sally Go ‘Round The Sun:• Place the visuals on the felt board as you sing the song.• Tell them you are Sally and will pretend to walk around the sun, moon and
chimney top. Ask everyone to hold up their hand so you can give them a high five.
• While singing the song, walk around the drum always giving one (or two sitting next to each other) a high five after each phrase (on the rests).
• Sing it a second time, asking students to figure out which word you say before you high fived them each time.
• Once they figured out it is after sun, moon and afternoon, have them high five their parents at the end of the phrases while singing the song.
• Show that the adult and child should hold hands go around in a circle when singing,“ Sally go round the chimney top, every afternoon” before clapping.
• Repeat with the CD, tapping the beat on the drum for the B section.
Use, “Drum away, drum away, that is all for the drum today” for the transition song we will use all year to put the drum away.

Bell Horses (Parent Tip)
• Take out the green and the pink bars and explain to the parents that our glockenspiel is designed so the bars will come out, making it possible for us to set the instrument up in a five note scale so it sounds good when we’re playing at the same time.
• Ask that the low or biggest bars are on the child’s left, just like the low notes will be on the xylophones and the piano.
• Use one mallet to play the beat on the biggest blue bar while singing “Bell Horses.”
• After singing the verse, encourage alternating hands for the running music, playing on any notes they choose.
• Play the beat of the rhymes on the ocean drum. After practicing without the CD, play with the recorded music.Parent Tip: Encourage them to use their instruments and CD at home.

Movement Run, Run! (2x switch groups)
Vocabulary: Allegro/Adagio
• Introduce your cat (named Adagio) and your little mouse (named Allegro) and explain what Adagio and Allegro mean in music.
• Tell story of the cat and mice and then ask them to either play the part of Adagio the cat or Allegro the mouse.
• Encourage parents to participate as you act out the story with the recorded music.• Review the puppet’s names and repeat the activity.
TIP: If you don’t have time to do it twice, let them know we will do it again next week. Perhaps they would like to be the other part next time.

Solo Singing Sing Me Your Name!
• Teacher sings, “Sing me your name” using so & mi while throwing yarn ball to one child.
• Child sings back, “My name is…” using so & mi; throws ball back to teacher.• When you repeat the activity sing, “What’s your favorite color?” Instead of
asking them their name again.
In big groups, it may be helpful to have them sit once they had a turn.
Yarn Ball or Soft Ball
Orff Rules Orff Rules • Have everyone sit while you discuss and demonstrate the rules for our precious, valuable Orff instruments:
• Walk around - Bottoms up - Play like butterflies not elephants - No mallets in the holes - Leave the bars as they are -How to lay the mallets to rest - Best place to hit the bar for the best sound – How to hold the mallets.
• Introduce the finger cymbals as the signal to lay the mallets to rest.• Ask the children to say a rule, and then choose an instrument to play.

Free Play To The Sopranino (Exploration)
Old Gray Cat (Exploration)
Free Play To The Sopranino:• Children play instruments when the sopranino plays, and stop when the
sopranino stops.• Instruct students to lay the mallets to rest on their instrument and choose
a new instrument.• Encourage free playing when they arrive at their new instrument.• Tip: The goal is to give the children a lot of exploration and play time on
the instruments, especially the first few weeks.
Old Gray Cat:• Use recording.• Encourage students to play in a way that sounds good with the different
verses of the song. Remind them to play soft enough to hear the words to the verses.• Repeat after they switched instruments.

Gathering Drum with Hello Song
Shosholoza (Exploration)
Alma Mater Blues (Piano) (New)
Tideo
Sally Go ‘Round The Sun
Shosholoza: Free play and exploration time on the large drum. Play with two hands, two fingers, scratches, circles, fists, swishes…
Alma Mater Blues: Before using the CD, have the students follow your visual and verbal directions for close (make a fist with both hands on drum), open (hands are flat on drum) and flip (turn hands over, palms up). Tell them “Now we have our Blues moves ready! The Blues has a chord pattern that we will follow with our hands.” Have them practice the pattern without you showing them, following only verbal directions.
Use the recording and follow the chord changes of the song. - I – closed fist - IV – open hand - V – flip open hand
Point out that this is a song parents can learn to play within the first three months of lessons in our “Playing based Simply Music piano program.”
Tideo:• Ask the children to keep the beat as we sing our hello song.• Practice playing three times, the rhythm for each tideo, on the
gathering drum.• Challenge everyone to play only the rhythm of “Ti-de-o” as we sing the
song. This usually requires many weeks of repetition for all to be successful.• Add the guitar (only strum on tideo with them).• Repeat with guitar strumming the beat.• Sing the names as the parent fingers the C chord on the ukulele and the
child strums with their “pointer” finger.
Sally Go ‘Round The Sun: Review the hand claps from last week especially having them remember after which words they will do the high fives.

Sally Go ‘Round The Sun:• Instead of giving the adult a high five as we did earlier, play any two notes
on the glockenspiels after sun, moon and afternoon.• Use the glockenspiel mallets to play the beat on the ocean drum during
the B section.• Play once without CD, and then add the recording.Parent Tip: We are playing in a pentatonic scale, the same scale as the black notes on the piano. We use a pentatonic scale so it sounds pleasant when we play together. We are removing the dissonant notes or the ones that wouldn’t sound good to accompany this song.

• Have a designated area in your music room that will be the barn. All the “Horses” are inside the barn.
• Sing the song. You can ask two parents to make a barn door holding hands if needed to hold the horses in the barn.
• For the B section (running music) the horses gallop to the other side of the room.
• For the rhymes they tap the beat. Repeat the song, returning to the other side of the room.

Review the Orff rules before moving to the instruments.
Bell Horses: Before reviewing specific parts, use the recording and have them play along any way they think it sounds good with the song.
Review the “Bell Horses” activity for Orff instruments from week two.
Use the finger cymbals to signal laying the mallets to rest on the instrument. Play the tick tock block to signal walking to a new instrument.Parent Tip: Children love what they know. Making music at home and singing the songs we learn in class will bring more participation in class.
Conductor Game:• Place one hoop on the floor in front of the instruments.• Explain that one person is the conductor.• Demonstrate: When the conductor jumps into the hoop, everyone plays
and when the conductor jumps out, everyone stops.• Ask who would like to be a conductor. Have the children take turns as the
rest of the class and teacher plays the instruments.• If desired, you can add the sopranino while the conductor is in the hoop
to add melody and phrasing.
TIP: If you have a large class, write down who had a turn as conductors. Reassure the children that the rest of the group will get a turn the following week.

The Very Busy Spider Book/The Spider Kept On Spinning:• Pass out the scarves and review the song and movement from last week. Use
the finger cymbals to indicate to spin the other direction, at the end of the phrase. Ask the children for their own ideas on how to spin with the scarf.
• Explain when the story says the spider was busy spinning, they will use their own way to spin with the scarf.
• Tell them the story also has echoes and the children will sing the animal’s part in the book.
• The children echo the teacher’s singing for the animals that come and visit the spider listed in the book. Example: For the horse, the teacher sings, “Neigh, neigh, want to go for a ride?” Using do, mi and so and the students will echo back. You can change the intervals of the notes for each animal making it harder or easier to echo back.
• On the page that says the spider is busy spinning her web, stand to sing the song and spin with the scarves.
The Colors Are Gliding:• Move with the scarf for verse one.• Fold the scarves and put them away as you follow the lyrics of verse two.

Cotton eyed Joe: Free play and exploration time on the large drum. Get ideas from the children.
Tideo: Play on all the tideos. Challenge children to sing the song without you.
Five Little Jack-O-Lanterns (Five Little Pumpkins): If desired, you can replace Jack-O-Lanterns with pumpkins.
• Put up the felts; count the number of pumpkins. • Everyone taps the beat on their drums for the “Five little …” phrase and
raises their hand up in the air using a high pitched vocal “Whooo” on the rest after “Gate.” Repeat this phrase several times.
• Sing lines two-six, one for each pumpkin. All children echo the teacher. Use different major and minor intervals depending on the level of your class for each pumpkin.
• For, “Oohh went the wind” children make swishes on the drum for the wind and on, “Out” play a big accent.
• When the pumpkins are running after, “Clear out of sight” have them play a tremolo until all pumpkins are gone.
TIP: The children love it if one of the pumpkins returns to the felt board. Whenever they see the pumpkin they have to play the drum and once it’s gone, stop. The felts work great for this song or you can also use real little pumpkins and draw a face on them. Little plastic or plush pumpkins will also work.

• Slowly tip the ocean drum from side to side to make wind sounds and spinning sounds for the introduction to the song.
• After singing phrase one, make a water spout for the spider to climb up by leaning the glockenspiel on your leg with the low notes on the bottom. Play from the C, the biggest blue bar, to the high C, the smallest blue bar.
• After singing phrase two, start from the highest bar and play a glissando to the lowest bar. Repeat for a total of four times played.
• After singing phrase three, play glissandos up and down.• Sing phrase four and play the same as after phrase one.• Practice singing and playing the entire song.
Parent Tip: Explain that it helps for them to play from low to high when the spider goes up if the glockenspiel is standing upright like the water spout. They will hear and see that the big bars are low and the small bars are high!
Make sure you use the version of music from this plan which indicates the singing first, then the playing.

Rhymes In The Rain (Exploration) (New)
Tideo (Parent Tip)
Vocabulary: Metallophone Xylophone Glockenspiel
Hello (Echo Song)
Rhymes In The Rain: As children enter for class, encourage them to play and explore any way they think it sounds good to the song. Repeat the recording if students have arrived early enough to play more than once.
Tideo:• Have everyone play the rhythm of ti-de-o on any bars they like. Practice
playing three times only when singing ti-de-o.• Have everyone practice keeping the steady beat on big C and G. • Play both parts at the same time with the help of the parents. The lowest
instruments keep the beat. Start the playing by saying, “One, two, the beat goes first” or, “One, two, steady beat” in the tempo you want them to play. It’s also great to have a student start the beat.
• Use the signals to have the children switch instruments. Ask a child on a low instrument to start the beat to establish the tempo of the song.
• Review the names of the instruments, xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiel.
• Introduce the wood sound and metal sound verses. Before singing the specific verse for wood or metal, ask the children to think if they have metal or wood.
• After each verse, play the sopranino to signal free playing.
Parent Tip: We have played our parts separately but now are ready to try two parts together, the beat and the tideo rhythm. This takes a lot more focus and concentration.
Hello (echo) Song:• Ask the children to be your echo after you sing and play, “Hel-lo.” A
cowbell or Orff instrument can be used by the teacher. Practice singing and playing two beats after, “Hel-lo,” “To sing” and “To play.”
• If successful, play two or three beat patterns for the children to echo.• After, “We’re on our way,” everyone improvises on their instrument as the
teacher plays the sopranino. • Play an “accent” on the big C to finish the activity.

Windy Weather:• Stand in a big circle everyone facing center. • For, “Windy weather…” sway back and forth to the beat until, “All get together”
when everyone moves slowly into the circle. (Scarves move side to side too)• Move back out on, “Blow the wind” and repeat the verse two times. • During the poem on, “Windy, windy weather,” children move back and
forth as if the wind is blowing them.• For, “Whirl around” and, “Twirl around” spin left, then spin right.• For, “All sink down together” spin slowly down to the floor, ending with
everyone lying on the ground.

• Explain that we are going to pretend to be very tiny seeds in the ground, waiting to grow. Ask the children to make their bodies as tiny as possible. Say, “I plant a little seed in the cold, dark ground.”
• Tell them the sun will be next and it will shine everywhere so make your body as big and spread out as possible. Say, ”Out comes the yellow sun, big and round.”
• Next, ask them to find a way to be little drops of rain moving high to low. Say, “Down comes the cool rain, soft and slow.”
• Practice how you will now be the plant, growing gradually, moving and turning to get lots of sunshine. “Up comes the little plant, grow, grow, grow.” – (end up in a shape they choose for their plant).
• Repeat with the recording.

Five Little Jack-O-Lanterns (Five Little Pumpkins):• If desired, you can replace Jack-O-Lanterns with pumpkins.• Put up the felts; count how many pumpkins there are. • Everyone taps the beat on the drum for the, “Five little …” phrase and
raises their hand up in the air using a high pitched vocal “Whooo” on the rest after, “Gate.” Repeat this phrase several times.
• Sing line two-six, one for each pumpkin. • SOLOS: Have the children sing the lines for each pumpkin as a solo and
put the pumpkins back up one by one on the gate. If you have a big class, you can start the activity with five children singing the solo to put up the pumpkins before counting them.
• For, “Oohh went the wind” children make swishes on the drum for the wind and on “out” play a big accent.
• When the pumpkins are running after, “Clear out of sight” have them play a tremolo until all pumpkins are gone.

Rhymes In The Rain (Exploration)
Tideo (Parent Tip)
Vocabulary: Metallophone Xylophone Glockenspiel
Hello (Echo) Song
Set up the Orff instruments so instruments with metal bars are on one side and ones with wooden bars are on another side. Remove Fs and Bs.
Rhymes In The Rain: As children enter the classroom, encourage them to play and explore any way they think it sounds good to the song. Use the recording and have the song repeat if the students have arrived early.
Ring the finger cymbals to signal to lay the mallets to rest. Play the tick tock block to signal to switch to another instrument. Play the sopranino to allow free time to play the new instruments.
Tideo:• Ask the children if their bars are made out of wood or metal. Explain that
the boxes are made of wood but look at the bars. Some are metal, some are wood.
• If needed, review the playing position of the children and how to hold the mallets for the best sound production.
• Sing the verse, “Time for woods,” then play the sopranino to signal time for free play on that kind of instrument. Repeat with verse, “Time for metals.”
• Patsch on the rhythm of ti-de-o to indicate playing only on the, “Ti-de-o” on any bars they like. Practice playing three times on ti-de-o.
• Ask the adults to help the children find the lowest bar on the left, the biggest C. Also find the biggest G. Parents tap the beat on the children as they play the beat. Say, “Tap, tap, tap…” to establish the steady beat before singing each child’s name in the song “Time for music.”
Hello (echo) Song:• Ask the children to be your echo after you sing and play, “Hello.” A
cowbell or Orff instrument can be used by the teacher. Practice singing and playing two beats after “Hel-lo,” “to sing” and “To play.”
• If successful, play two or four beat patterns for the children to echo.• After, “We’re on our way,” everyone improvises on their instrument as the

Prior to class, place a variety of drums and percussion instruments in a circle. Explain that everyone will be able to try the different instruments but we will only switch instruments when we hear the signal. Demonstrate the signal. The signal could be playing a samba whistle, cymbals, cowbell, or anything else that can be clearly heard. Switch instruments during and after each song.
Powama: Free play and exploration time in the percussion circle. Repeat the song for more exploration time.
Tideo: Children play on the beat for some verses and on the ti-de-o rhythms for other verses for the singing of their names.
Shoo Turkey: • Practice singing and playing twice on each, “Yes, ma’am” and “So-so.” • Ask everyone to play and sing, “Yes, ma’am” and “So-so” after the
teacher sings each phrase. • Stand and explain we will need our turkey wings (raise arms with elbows
out), and our turkey tails (shake hips), so we can do the silly turkey trot around the drum circle for the next part of the song. When the A section returns, everyone will have a new instrument.
• All are welcome to free play until it’s time to play, “Yes, ma’am” again. • The teacher surprises the children with a turkey puppet that makes turkey
noises as he dances with the children on the B section.• Repeat at least once.
Farmer Brown’s Cow:• Present Farmer Brown’s cow and review song from last week.• Sing verse one. • Play the percussion instruments for the chorus.• Add more verses depending on time you have.(The drum circle part of the lesson should not take more than 20 minutes)

By repeating this activity, the children will have a better understanding of the form and phrasing and will be happy to have this delightful song return later in their piano lessons. Hearing their parent play these songs on piano would be the best way for your child to start playing the piano. They learn from imitation! Many of our parents are having fun playing piano and are amazed by the quick progress of this unique nontraditional approach.
