Existing data from the College Student Life Survey, Monitoring the Future, National Survey on Drug Use and Health, and Secondary Student Life Survey provide an unprecedented opportunity to examine research questions that will lead to a more comprehensive understanding of prescription drug diversion. The objective of the proposed secondary data analysis is to better understand the magnitude of prescription drug diversion among adolescents and young adults. To meet this objective, we propose using data collected between 2005 and 2009 from over 40,000 adolescents and young adults in the United States. The proposed study aims to: 1) examine the sources of diverted medications among nonmedical users; 2) explore different diversion sources among adolescents and young adults by DSM-IV substance use disorder status (e.g., nonmedical users with a DSM-IV substance use disorder and nonmedical users without a DSM-IV substance use disorder); and 3) identify diversion behaviors associated with medical use of prescription medications. BMI will also be used as a continuous variable in order to assess weight gain. Finally, we will examine the role of potential

mediators and modifiers of the associations between overweight/obesity and psychiatric disorders/SUDs by assessing the role of weight discrimination, disability, distress, and social networks. Because the perception of acceptable body size appears to differ according to demographic factors, we will also examine gender, race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, and age cohort as possible effect modifiers. This study is based on two population-based longitudinal data sets, the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area (Baltimore-ECA) and the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). The NESARC is a nationally representative longitudinal study of adults (≥ 18 years old) in the non-institutionalized US population with detailed information on psychiatric disorders, SUDs, weight discrimination, body mass index (BMI), and other demographic information. It is based on a multistage design sampling the civilian non-institutionalized household population of adults who participated in 2001-2002 and 2004-2005 (N=34,653 at follow-up). The Baltimore ECA is a population-based cohort including a wide range of psychopathology and BMI from which we will use data from 1993-96 and 2004-5 (N=1,071 at follow-up). Pilot project, not yet submitted to request NIH funding, currently funded with Michigan State University Research Funds, Anthony & Martins (PIs) RESEARCH ON BRAZILIAN MEDICAL STUDENTS’ STIGMA TOWARDS PSYCHIATRIC CONDITIONS: A PILOT PROJECT The topics of the proposed research are high priority psychiatry research topics. Four conditions will be investigated in six different Brazilian medical schools: (a) tobacco smoking and related morbidity and mortality, (b) depressive illnesses, and (c) drinking of alcoholic beverages. All three of these conditions are ranked in the top 10 conditions that contribute to the global burden of diseases, or are slated to move into the top 10 category for all countries during the span of time from the present until 2030. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Personal statement of research and research objectives

My current research interests focus on the epidemiology of drug use disorders and in the association of drug use disorders with psychiatric comorbidity. I am particularly interested on the epidemiology of ecstasy use/club drugs among adolescents and young adults, on the epidemiology of extramedical opioid analgesic use and prescription drug use and on the epidemiology of gambling and pathological gambling among adolescents and adults. I am also interested in gender differences in gambling/pathological gambling and in substance use disorders, in risk and protective factors for drug abuse/dependence and gambling/pathological gambling, in drug use, gambling and mental health problems among minorities/underserved populations as well as in preventive interventions in drug use/misuse and gambling/pathological gambling. In those capacities, I have applied Biostatistics methods (such as Survival Analysis- Cox proportional hazard models with time-dependent covariates, Generalized Estimating Equations, Latent Class Analysis and Growth Mixture models) to address my research interests.
