42Whirlpool Global Consumer Design brings us the kitchen of the future. Itmay look just like its traditional counterpart, but Greenkitchen is actuallybased on an intelligent continuous cycle of water and heat. Clean tap wateris identified by sensors placed in the sink’s drain, channeled into a specialtank and reused for watering plants or running in the dishwasher; thelatter, in turn, uses the heat generated by the fridge’s motor to heat thewater. Everything that is expelled from one unit therefore gets filtered andsanitized so it can be used by another unit, which translates into energysavings of up to 70%. This amount can even be increased by 10% whenGreenkitchen is used with particular knowledge and care.

With colored polypropylene bodywork and recycled-steeltrestles, the chairs in the Catifa 46 and Catifa 53 collections byItalian company Arper may look like other chairs, but in fact theyare quite unique. An evaluation of their environmental impacthas been carefully analyzed for every phase of their life cycle, from the choice and treatment of the raw materials to thepackaging and recycling of the final product. The analysis led to the development of a complex calculation procedure that was assigned an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) inaccordance with ISO 14025, which attests to the product’ssustainability at the international level. Its simple, essential formhides the precise work that went into improving Catifa’sperformance, ergonomic and otherwise.

Initially German designer Stefan Diez wanted to create a furnishing objectout of wooden netting that could be flexible and multifunctional. Thedesign included two versions, one for the ground and one for the wall.Several parts had to be laser-cut from a single piece of wood, with differentthicknesses to create the curves. Out of this original idea, the designerdeveloped the final project in sheet metal, which is more lightweight andversatile, and defined its function as a coat rack. The two versions of UponFloor are produced in a single manufacturing plant with minimal variationsin the production process, thereby considerably reducing theenvironmental impact.

Halfway between a rickshaw and an electric bicycle, the CityCruiser ispowered by the driver’s muscle strength, with a supplementary electricmotor for long stretches. Two 12-Volt batteries help it reach a speed ofabout 7 mph without the release of harmful emissions. In addition to thedriver, the vehicle has space for two passengers plus luggage. TheCityCruiser is built with sustainable materials: recyclable polyethylene forthe cab and metal for the chassis. The use of more than one material, however, does not impede its recycling, since it was produced according tothe dictates of design for components. Otherwise cumbersome for itsdimensions (10 x 3.5 x 6 ft), it can thus be easily transported to dealers.

With the 2008 spring-summer collection, high fashion became themouthpiece of the eco-friendly world. Venezuelan couturier GuillermoMariotto, creative director of Italian fashion house Gattinoni, presented 43 designs on the runway created with natural, biodegradable andrecycled materials. Among the pieces in the collection, Bio-sposa, awedding dress, merits particular attention for its use of PLA fiber, aderivative of cornstarch. The particularly luminous reflections of thegarments created this way and the design, in no way inferior to clothesmade of traditional textiles, make the aesthetic potential of this type ofresource obvious. The message speaks for itself: even the high-fashionworld can actively participate in protecting the environment and callupon its customers to buy mindfully and consciously.

While good design is generally associated with costly furnitureand often extreme forms, this piece of furniture brings designback to its original dictates: aesthetics, functionality and low cost.Foldschool is a line of cardboard furniture for kids that can beassembled at home by simply using cardboard, a paper cutter andglue. Patterns for various objects can be downloaded easily fromthe Internet and kids can personalize their chosen modelsaccording to their wishes, for example by painting them.Foldschool’s sustainability does not end with its material: the do-it-yourself aspect is in fact the great advantage since it avoidsoverproduction, transport and waste.

Eco Way is take-away food packaging made of banana leaves. Thepatina covering them has a consistency similar to wax, makingthem perfect for holding even hot or greasy food. Since theymaintain their robust features long after being removed from theplant, cutting is all that is required to transform them intopackaging. The package is closed by folding the leaf and securingit with small wooden clasps if needed—i.e. no glue is used. It isopened by tearing the leaf along its natural lines. The realizationof this design, which was presented at the Dining 2015competition organized by Designboom in 2008, could lead to adrastic reduction in the packaging waste that takes up so muchspace in our dump sites.

Alternative energyThe use of sources other than oil for theproduction of energy, including renewable, natural elements (biomass) or inexhaustiblefuels (wind, sun, hydrogen and water) thatcan be found anywhere. Alternative energy, also called “green” or “clean,” can be obtainedthrough the controlled combustion ofbiomass and the use of wind vanes, photovoltaic cells or combustion cells (fuelcells) to transform hydrogen (the simplestapplication of which are PEM cells).

BiodegradabilityThis term was first used in the 20th centuryto indicate the ability of a compound toseparate into simple elements and re-enterthe cycle of nature. It takes on more specificmeanings according to the scientificenvironment (geology, physics, chemistryor biochemistry).

Community outreachThis expression covers the involvement ofcomponents that are not directly tied to agiven community and therefore refers tothe wider community. In the world ofcommunications and multimedia, itindicates reaching new sectors of thecommunity, with the objective of acquiringmore credibility and opportunities bybranching out from one specific target.

Eco-compatibilityThis defines how compatible an industrialsystem and its product and processes arewith the environment. A product is definedas eco-compatible when it has a well-established relationship with its context.Such a relationship ensures functionalityand well -being with reduced consumptionof resources and a low level of pollution. Inthis sense, an eco-compatible productpromotes sustainable development inenvironmental, economic and social terms.

Environmental impactThe set of effects on the environmentcaused by an event, action or behavior. Alsounderstood broadly to relate to social andeconomic contexts.

Environmental Product Declaration(EPD)Associated with the European ISO 14000regulation, it informs consumers of thecharacteristics and environmental perfor -mance of a product in an objective, comparable and credible way. To that end,an analysis of the environmental aspectsand the potential impact for the entire lifecycle of the product is carried out (LCA - LifeCycle Assessment). The EPD is voluntaryand can be certified by the companyinternally or by external bodies.

Cell Polymer ElectrolyteMembrane (PEM)Vedere ENERGIE ALTERNATIVE.
