Sing Happy Birthday to Rubber Duckie Today and Every Day

Happy January 13 Birthday Rubber Duckie!

Rubber Duckie from Sesame Street celebrates his birthday or her birthday on January 13 of every year and so do Rubber Duckie‟s family and friends all over the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck from a store in 1969. In 1970, Ernie, a popular Sesame Street Muppet, sang about Rubber Duckie often and talked and traveled to other parts of the show, taking Rubber Duckie with him. He is still singing and traveling with Rubber Duckie.

In magic years Rubber Duckie takes on the age of his or her owner and in magic stories a Rubber Duckie can be either a he or a she.

Happy Birthday, Rubber Duckie

(To the tune of Happy Birthday To You)

Happy Birthday, Rubber Duckie,

You‟re my friend and bath buddy,

Page 4: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

4

You get water in my nose,

And you tickle between my toes.

Happy Birthday, Rubber Duckie,

You‟re so pretty and so plucky,

When I get soap in my eyes,

You find my towel and help me dry.

Happy Birthday, Rubber Duckie,

When I get old if I‟m lucky,

You‟ll always be in my bathtub,

Singing splish, splash, and rub a dub.

Rubber Duckie and Rubber Ducks Have A History

Rubber Ducks have a story that goes back into the 1920s, years before Rubber Duckie came to Sesame Street. An old fashioned Rubber Duck was toy duck made out of hard rubber. Now Rubber Ducks are made out of a thick vinyl because it is cheaper and lasts longer than rubber. Most Rubber ducks come with a nozzle usually located at the bottom so when the duck is squeezed, it squeaks a happy noise.

When a child – young or old – puts a Rubber Duck in the bath water and splashes it, the Rubber Duck bathes alongside the splasher with wide, happy eyes.

Rubber Ducks Are All Different

Like people, Rubber Ducks come in all shapes and sizes. There are giant rubber ducks and tiny rubber ducks. There are red, purple, yellow, pink and green rubber ducks. There are rubber ducks that wear sunglasses and rubber ducks that wear lights that shine in the water. On a more serious note, some Rubber Ducks wear pink ribbons to increase breast cancer awareness.

Doctor, lawyer, and politician Rubber Ducks have been sighted in various bathtubs around the world. Occasionally, a celebrity Rubber Duck like Little Richard swims past and even more occasionally, the original Rubber Duckie floats by.

Rubber Ducks Have Feelings, Too

(To the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)

Rubber Ducks have feelings, too,

Some look different than you,

Some are red and some are brown,

Some are short and some are round.

Rubber Ducks have feelings, too,

Some have quacks bigger than you,

Others are shy and don‟t make a sound,

Float away when people are around.

Rubber Ducks have feelings, too,

Play with them and hug them, do,

They quack happily when you say,

No matter how you look, you‟re okay!

Famous People Own Rubber Ducks

Ernie the Muppet‟s Rubber Duckie is probably the most famous, but other residents of Sesame Street also own Rubber Duckies. Hoots the Owl has a pet Rubber Duckie. Dr. Bunsen Honeydew loses and finds his Rubber Duckie in an It‟s Story Time short story, “Where‟s Beaker?” Fozzie Bear in Muppets from Space uses a special Rubber Duckie equipped with invisibility spray.

People even collect Rubber Ducks. Charlotte Lee and her collection of Rubber Ducks hold the 2007 Guinness World Record for the World‟s Largest Rubber Duck Collection. She owns 2,583 individual rubber ducks.

According to a 2001 story in The Sun, a British tabloid newspaper, Queen Elizabeth II keeps a Rubber Duck wearing an inflatable crown in her bathroom. A workman repainting her bathroom saw the duck and told his story to The Sun. The story made sales of rubber ducks in the United Kingdom skyrocket for a short time.

Rubber Ducks Race for Charity and Cash

Charities worldwide sponsor Rubber Duck races, releasing hundreds or thousands of Rubber Ducks into rivers, lakes, and other waterways and floating them down a race course marked with buoys. The first Rubber Duck to float past the finish line is the winner. The Free Store Food Bank in Cincinnati, Ohio, holds one of the largest Rubber Duck races, with over 100,000 ducks racing to raise money.

The Ken-Ducky Derby is held every September in Louisville, Kentucky to benefit Harbor House of Louisville, a training and development organization for disabled adults. Besides the duck race, the Ken-Ducky Derby Family Festival features arts and crafts, food, and games.

The Halifax, Nova Scotia, Duck Derby features 10,000 rubber ducks in the Halifax Harbor. The grand prize includes one million Canadian dollars and a trip anywhere in Canada.

Rubber Ducks Go to Sea and Swim for Science

A Chinese factory shipped three 40-foot containers to the United States. The containers, holding 29,000 Friendly Floatees, plastic toy ducks, were washed off the ship during a Pacific storm on January 10, 1992.

Nineteen thousand ducks floated south and three months later landed in Indonesia, Australia, and South America. The rest of the ducks, about 10,000 strong, headed

north to Alaska and then full circled back near Japan. Hundreds of the ducks floated into the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia and were trapped in the Arctic ice. They moved through the ice at about one mile per day and finally were sighted in the North Atlantic in the year 2,000.

Rubber Duckie and The Family of Rubber Ducks

Rubber Duckie and the Family of Rubber Ducks are far more than bathtub toys. They provide people with adventure, excitement and plain fun. Ernie the Muppet expresses it best when he sings: “Rubber Duckie I‟m awfully fond of you.”

Happy Birthday, Rubber Duckie and his family of Rubber Ducks.

These Winter Songs Will Make Winter Clothes Less Boring!

Here are some songs to sing and some facts about animal adaptation to winter to discuss during those bundling up to go out into winter weather sessions. Even if you live in a place where winter doesn‟t completely take over for months, there are changes in temperature that will make you rummage in your closet for a light jacket or fleece vest. If you do live in a place where winter visits for months every year, you need to think about coats, mitten, hats, and boots. Here are some songs to make the tedious job of getting children into winter gear a little less tedious! It’s That Time of the Year!

(To the tune of Old MacDonald Had a Farm Coats, mittens, hats, and boots are here It‟s that time of the year, You wear them here you wear them there, Don‟t you dare leave your skin bare. Your ears get cold, as cold as a toad,

Page 8: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

8

Your nose freezes a sneeze, Your face stings like bees, The cold knocks your knees, Coats, mittens, hats, and boots are here, It‟s that time of the year! Keeping Winter Warm with Coats People and animals have different ways of keeping warm in the winter time. Some people wear coats that cover most of their bodies and others wear down filled vests all winter. When you go out to play in the snow you need to wear a warm coat, a winter hat and mittens, and boots. Different kinds of winter coats that people war include fur coats, pea coats, leather coats, ski jackets, or puffy coats. A pea coat doesn‟t look like a pea. A pea coat has broad wings of cloth on either side of it, large wood or metal buttons and pockets that look like a straight line. It usually is a navy blue color. Sailors who served in navies from Europe about 150 years ago originally wore pea coats, but today everybody wears them. Gloves and Mittens Keep Fingers from Freezing and Thumbs Toasty It‟s important to wear gloves or mittens to keep your fingers winter warm. Gloves are usually soft as doves and are made of knit, wool, or fleeces. If you need to keep your fingers free, you can wear fingerless gloves. Gloves are made in the shape of your hand. On the other hand, mittens are made to cover your whole hand with a separate cover for your thumb. Hats Keep Body Heat From Escaping Through Your Head There are many different hats that you can wear in winter for covering your ears, including a beanie. A beanie is a brimless hat that hugs your head and comes with or without a visor. Beanies are made by joining triangular sections of cloth seamed together around the sides and anchored by a button at the crown. There are winter hats that look like a hunter‟s hat with flaps that cover both or your ears and there are simple knit hats with or without brims. Boots Keep Your Feet Warm and Dry People have worn boots for hundreds, even thousands of years. Native American people made deer skin boots for hunting in the snow. The warm, thick fur

Page 9: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

9

protected their feet from the snow and made it possible for them to travel with warm, dry feet. Inuit tribes in the Arctic made mukluks out of reindeer or sealskin and lined them with furs. They are warm and quiet boots that helped hunters creep up on their prey. They help children sneak up on snow forts. Let’s Play on a Winter Day (To the tune of Ring Around the Rosie) A winter coat‟s warm and cozy, A winter coat‟s warm and cozy, Sleeve one, Sleeve tow, Zip it up and you are through! A winter hat covers your ears, A winter hat covers your ears, Warms your head, Warms your head. Take it off when you go to bed! Winter mittens warm your hands, Winter mittens arm your hands, Wouldn‟t it be neat? Wouldn‟t it be neat? To wear them on your feet!! Winter boots keep your feet dry, Winter boots keep your feet dry, Do you have any plans? Do you have any plans? To wear them on your hands?

Animals Wear Coats, Hats, Mittens, and Boots Too!

Animal Coats

(To the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)

Penguins wear permanent tuxedos,

Beetles have coats as hard as needles,

When I play outside I look and see,

Page 10: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

10

Animals wear coats just like me!

Goats and Coats

Angora goats grow hair that people call mohair and people have been using mohair for hundreds of years. Mohair is one of the oldest materials used to make cloth. It is strong, shiny, warm, and waterproof and it is flame and crease resistant. It is usually more expensive than sheep‟s wool and considered to be a luxury fabric like silk. Fine mohair from young goats is used for clothing and the thicker hair from older goats is used for carpets and coats.

Bats and Hats

Bats are mammals and like all mammals they have fur covered bodies. Their skin is as soft as the skin on your eyelid. A bat‟s wings are made up of a double layer of kin stretched over its arms and long fingers. Bats wrap their wings around themselves to keep warm.

Mittens and Kittens

The Maine Coon cat has some of the most water resistant fur in the feline world. The fur on the Maine Coon is longer on its neck and stomach to protect it against the winter snow and it falls smoothly like a waterfall.

The Maine Coon has a long bushy tail that the cat wraps around itself when it curls up to sleep for protection from the cold winters. His or her ears are covered with heavy fur inside and on the tips for protection from the cold. The big, round, tufted feet of the Maine Coon act like “snow shoes”, helping it slide across the snow.

Boots and Newts

You can only find newts in North and South America and in the warmer climates of Northern Africa, Asia, and Europe. If you look under stones in streams and under logs and leaves in forests you can find newts. There are more newts in North America than on any other continent in the world.

Paddle-Tail newts and male Palmate newts have fully webbed feet with very short toes to help them climb on slippery surfaces. Newts don‟t have to wear boots to help them climb on slippery surfaces, but people do!

This is the way we put on our hats,

Do you know where to find some bats?

This is the way we put on our mittens,

Cat Songs to Sing For and With Cats

Cats sing some of their best numbers on back fences in the middle of the night and do some of their best purring on the laps of people they own and love.

Every year about four million cats end up in shelters, including thousands of kittens who are born in the spring and summer "kitten seasons." The American Humane Council celebrates Adopt-A-Cat Month each June to encourage people to adopt a cat. These fun songs will help children appreciate cats and their habits all year around.

Cat Curtain Calls

No matter what color a cat‟s fur or whether it is a Tabby, Persian or Alley cat, cats all come from the same species- Felis catus.

What Kind of Cat Am I?

(To the Tune of Where is Thumbkin or Frere Jacques. Use as many cat varieties as the children can name)

What kind of cat am I?

Page 14: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

14

What kind of cat am I?

I „m a Tabby,

I„m a Tabby,

I like paper bags twice my size,

I like chasing butterflies,

I‟m a Tabby,

I‟m a Tabby.

What kind of cat am I?

What kind of cat am I?

I‟m an Alley cat,

I‟m an Alley cat

I like paper bags twice my size,

I like chasing butterflies,

I‟m an Alley cat,

I‟m an Alley cat.

I‟m a Tiger, etc.

I‟m a Siamese Cat, etc.

Cats are as Old as People

Some historians say Egyptians first kept cats as pets 4,000 years ago when they discovered that cats caught the mice that ate their grain. Egyptians made mummies of their cats and they also mummified mice so that cats and mice

Page 15: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

15

would be together in the Egyptian heaven. People in other countries around the world adopted cats as their partners in mice control and as their pets.

Calling Cats Names

Male cats used to be called rams or boars. Then in 1760, an anonymous author wrote a book called "The Life & Adventures of a Cat." The main character in the story was a male cat called "Tom the Cat." The book turned out to be very popular and male cats quickly became known as Tom Cats. A group of cats is called a clowder and a group of kittens is called a kindle.

Kitten Song

(To the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)

Kittens are sleeping in the chairs,

Kittens are sleeping on the stairs,

Kittens wake up with a stretch and a yawn,

They stay up all night and go to sleep at dawn!

Kittens meow and chase the broom,

Kittens don‟t take up very much room,

The sure thing about a kitten is that

A kitten grows up to be a big cat!

Cat Communication

Cats talk to each other and to people by purring, in ordinary voices, hissing, yowling, or screeching. They communicate with other cats and mark their territories with their claws and by spraying their scent on their territory.

Page 16: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

16

Cat Chat

(Sing to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat)

I like to purr and lick my fur

Oh, I really do,

Pet me, pet me, pet me, pet me,

And I‟ll purr and lick you too!

I like to rub against your legs,

Get up out of your seat!

Feed me, feed me, feed me, feed me,

We‟ll share my favorite treat!

Cat Bodies

Cats are nimble and their long tails help them keep their balance. Their eyes reflect light and they have sharp hearing. Cats have rough tongues that allow them to clean up every bit of food in their dish and to clean themselves. The ridged pattern on a cat's nose is as individual as a human fingerprint. Cats breathe at the rate of 20-30 breaths per minute. Some cats snore at the same rate.

Thor's Snore

(To the tune of the Farmer in the Dell)

I hear my pet cat Thor,

Outside my bedroom door,

He sleeps there on the floor,

Page 17: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

17

And all he does is snore!

Each night I go to bed,

Pull the covers over my head,

The noise sounds like thunder's roar,

But it is only Thor!

One night I yell and billow,

Settle Thor on my soft pillow,

My mom calls me a grouch,

But I'm sleeping on the couch!

Cat Paws

Cats perspire through their paws. The front paws of a cat has five toes and their back paws have four toes. There are some cats who have more than 18 toes. When a cat has more than 18 toes, it is called a polydactyl.

Polydactyl comes from two Greek words, polys which means many and dactyl which means finger. Cats can use their paws to run about 30 miles per hour at their fastest speed.

Cat Litter

The use of clay cat litter came about by accident. In 1948, a young man named Edward Lowe worked in his father‟s company that sold industrial absorbents. She complained to him that she was tired of cleaning up ashes from the litter box that got tracked all over the house. He gave his neighbor a supply of absorbent material called Fuller‟s Earth that was used to absorb grease to replace the ashes she was using in her cat‟s litter box.

Ed realized that he had a good product going and started marketing Fuller‟s Earth as Kitty Litter in pet shops and at cat shows. After a slow start, it became a multimillion dollar business.

18

Litter Party

(To the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)

All of the humans are out of sight

Out of sight,

Out of sight,

All of the humans are out of sight,

It‟s a litter party night!

Toss the litter up and down,

Up and down,

Up and down,

Toss the litter up and down,

Spread it all around.

All the cats roll down the hall,

Roll down the hall,

Roll down the hall,

All the cats roll down the hall,

Throw litter instead of a ball.

Cats Make Good Pets

Cats are interesting, fun, and affectionate pets. The American Humane Council suggests adopting one during June, National Adopt-A-Cat month or any month of the year.

Singing Spring Sun Songs and Acting the Spring Sun’s Space Story

Let‟s sing and act out the sun‟s space story on earth. A blazing sentinel in the sky the sun heats and lights the earth and creates its own space story. The sun has stories and statistics of its own and you can help tell the sun's story by singing and acting out spring sun songs.

The Sun Is A Star That Heats and Lights The Earth

The sun provides heat and light for the people and plants and animals on earth. It is a star that sits in the center of the solar system and it takes up most of the room in the solar system –about 99.86 percent of it. If the sun sat in your desk, it would come right to the edge of the seat and sometimes hang over the edge.

It would take 109 earths to fit across the surface of the sun, and the inside of the sun could hold 1.3 million earths. Despite its size, the sun is only a middle sized star in the Milky Way Galaxy which holds 100 billion stars. If the sun and the earth were balls, the sun would be like a basketball and the earth like a baseball.

Page 21: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

21

The Basketball Sun and Baseball Earth

(To The tune of Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush)

(Use a basketball and baseball as props and have the children orbit the sun while they are singing the song.)

The sun is like a basketball, a basketball, a basketball,

The sun is like a basketball, bouncing next to earth for fun.

The earth is like a baseball, a baseball, a baseball,

The earth is like a baseball, bouncing next to the sun.

The earth orbits around the sun, around the sun, around the sun,

The earth orbits around the sun, it makes a year long run.

The sun is 93 million miles away, miles away, miles away,

The sun is 93 million miles away, but it sends heat and light every day.

The Sun Is Warm and Bright

The sun is mostly made up of hydrogen and helium – astronomers estimate about ¾ of it is hydrogen and helium. Oxygen, carbon, neon, and iron, are some of the other elements found on the sun. The sun is hot, 10,832 degrees Fahrenheit at its surface, so hot that nuclear reactions take place in its interior. The sun is hotter than the first bite of pizza just out of the oven.

The sun shines brightly on earth and scientists believe that it is brighter than about 85 percent of all of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy. Even though the sun is 93 million miles away from the earth, its light can burn unprotected human eyes. Even during an eclipse of the sun when it is covered by the shadow of the moon, it is necessary to wear protective glasses.

Page 22: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

22

The Sun Is Bright

(To the tune of Michael Row the Boat Ashore)

The sun is bright, protect your sight,

Wear your sunglasses now,

The sun is bright, protect your sight,

Don‟t say Ow! Ow! Ow!

The sun is hot, use your sun screen,

Use your sun screen,

Rub it on your arms and legs,

So the sun won‟t treat you mean.

(The children can put on and take off sun glasses and pretend to rub sunscreen on their arms.)

The Sun Shines for Four Seasons

(To The tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)

When spring and summer come, hooray!

I run and hug the sun every day,

I hang my winter coat out of reach,

And take my blanket to the beach.

In fall the sun prepares for winter ahead,

Yawning leaves and flowers to bed,

In winter the sun works thin and high,

Page 23: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

23

Swirling snowflakes in the sky,

Fall and winter the sun is lean

But peeks out often enough to be seen,

Spring and summer sun is a dream,

Don‟t forget to wear your sun screen!

(The children can hug the sun, hang up coats, lay a blanket on the beach, etc.)

The Sun makes Things Grow

The sun helps create climate and weather on earth. In the spring the warm sunshine warms the soil and seeds enough for them to start growing.

Sing this seed song to help springtime seeds grow.

Sleepy Seed

(To the tune of where is Thumbkin)

I‟m a sleepy seed

I‟m a sleepy seed

Snuggled in my bed,

Snuggled in my bed,

The sun is shining brightly,

The sun is shining brightly,

I wake up and raise my head,

I wake up and raise my head.

I‟m a yawning seed,

I‟m a yawning seed,

Page 24: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

24

Climbing toward the sun,

Climbing toward the sun,

The sunlight gives me a hug,

The sunlight gives me a hug,

Come out and have some fun!

Come out and have some fun!

I‟m a growing seed,

I‟m a growing seed,

Climbing by the hour,

Climbing by the hour,

See me leaf and flower,

See me leaf and flower,

Sunlight gives me power,

Sunlight gives me power.

(The children can pretend to be seeds and wake up and climb up to the sun).

The Sun Helps Create Thunderstorms and Rainbows

The light and the warmth of the sun help create thunderstorms. The sun’s rays heat the

land which causes warm air to rise from the earth’s surface into the layers of the

atmosphere. Water vapor and cool and warm air combine to create a thunderstorm.

Thunderstorms often occur one right after the other.

Page 25: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

25

Thunder Row

(To the tune of Row, Row, Row, Your Boat)

Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,

A thunderstorm has come,

The thunder crashes, the lightning flashes,

Blame it on the sun!

Patter, patter ,patter, patter,

The rain falls hard and fast,

The sun peeks out again, Dries up the rain,

The thunderstorm is past.

Boil, boil ,boil, boil,

The sun heats up the air,

It beats down on trees and burns my knees,

Brings back thunder in the air.

(The children can act out the thunderstorm).

Sunlight and rain combine in a special way to create a special natural vision called a rainbow. Scientists explain that the sun shining through raindrops bends light in ways that create a rainbow. A rainbow is made up of light in water and since raindrops are constantly motion, the appearance of the rainbow is always changing. Each rainbow is unique and no two people see the same rainbow because people can just see a rainbow with their own eyes. But a rainbow couldn‟t be a rainbow without the sun shining through the rain.

Page 26: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

26

The Sun Makes Rainbows

(To the tune of Ring Around the Rosy)

When the rain falls down and the sunlight glows,

The sun decides to make rainbows,

It shines through clouds and lights the air,

See the rainbow shining there?

Name the colors, red and blue.

Purple and orange and yellow too,

Name the colors green and pink,

They are beautiful, don‟t you think?

The colors are different, but in the rain,

The sun shines through them all the same,

Sing loudly so everybody knows,

The sun makes thunderstorms and rainbows.

(The children can make a rainbow)

The sun is big and powerful and people, plants, and animals on the earth couldn't live without sunlight and heat. Sing about the sun and remember that it helps make rain and rainbows!

Swamp Songs to Sing on SAVE THE FROGS! Day or Any Day

SAVE THE FROGS! Day is celebrated every year in April. Here are some fun songs to sing with your class on SAVE THE FROGS! DAY and any day all through the year.

Frogs are disappearing from ponds and streams and rivers all around the world. About 200 species have completely disappeared since1980, and the surviving frog populations are faced with problems including pollution, loss of habitat, invasive species, climate change, disease, and over harvesting.

These songs for SAVE THE FROGS! Day or any day, can make the frog‟s problems real to children and hopefully make them care about a solution. The children can also act out the songs with finger plays.

Frog Count Up and Down

(To the tune of the Farmer in the Dell)

Now count one little frog,

Sitting on a log,

He wants some company,

Please save his family.

28

Now count two little frogs,

Sitting on two logs,

When your eating's done,

Don't throw garbage in their pond!

Now count three little frogs,

Sitting on three logs,

They need a place to stomp,

Don't cover up their swamp!

Now count four little frogs,

Sitting on four logs,

Eating mosquitoes for lunch,

Help them make a mosquito munch!

Now count five little frogs,

Croaking on five logs,

Don't put them in jars!

They have to jump up to the stars.

Now count six little frogs,

Croaking on six logs,

29

They're as old as a dinosaur,

Help them live a million years more!

This song can be sung forwards or backwards using any number combinations. The children can act out the motions of sitting, throwing, stomping, catching and eating mosquitoes, and putting a frog in a jar. For the "six frogs verse" some can pretend to be dinosaurs and others can count to ten times to approximate a million.

Freddy and Betty Frog

(To the Tune of Old MacDonald Had a Farm)

Freddy frog lived in a bog,

Polliwogs will grow,

And in this bog there was a log,

Polliwogs will grow,

Freddy hopped here and Freddy hopped there

Freddy swam swam,

Freddy croaked, croaked,

Freddy laughed, laughed

Freddy joked joked,

Freddy frog lived in a bog,

Polliwogs will grow!

Freddy married Betty one day in June,

Polliwogs will grow,

They found a lily pad in a blue lagoon,

Polliwogs will grow,

Packed their suitcases and moved to Ecuador,

Polliwogs will grow,

Although life was sweet,sweet,

There weren't enough mosquitoes to eat,

So they hopped back home and rested their feet,

Freddy and Betty frog lived in a bog,

Polliwogs will grow.

Freddy and Betty stopped Pease, Pease,

Polliwogs will grow,

They tied him in water up to his knees,

Polliwogs will grow,

When the bulldozers came,

Freddy knew who to blame,

Freddy and Betty added another lily pad room,

Polliwogs will grow,

Polliwogs will grow,

They watch the pond shrink, water's brown as muck,

But they will keep trying, they'll never give up,

Freddy and Betty keep adding more logs,

Because their polliwogs changed to frogs!

Polliwogs will grow!

The children can be divided into two groups or more with one group singing each stanza and another group singing back, "Polliwogs will grow!" It can also be acted out.

Froggie Went A- Walking

(To the tune of Froggie Went A-Courtin')

Froggie went walking and he did hop, Oh, yes!

I'll help him do his best.

Froggie stuck out his tongue and caught a bug, Oh, yes!

Froggie stuck out his tongue and caught a bug, Oh Yes!

Froggie stuck out his tongue and caught a bug,

The bug got away and hid in a rug,

Oh yes, Oh yes, I'll help him do his best.

Froggie kissed the trees and the bumble bees, Oh, yes!

Froggie kissed the trees and the bumble bees, Oh, yes!

Froggie kissed the trees and the bumble bees,

Then he missed and he kissed his knees,

Oh yes, Oh yes, I'll help him do his best.

Froggie hopped back and sat on his log, Oh, yes!

Froggie hopped back and sat on his log, Oh, yes!

Froggie hopped back and sat on his log,

Learn Bicycle Safely by Singing Bicycle Safety Songs

These songs are based on five basic bicycle safety rules and you can sing them all year around.

Children need to be aware of bike safety rules and alert even if they are just riding their bicycles in their own driveways and on the sidewalks in front of their houses.

Refrains for Parents and Teachers

Children younger than ten years old shouldn‟t ride in the street, but riding on the sidewalk has some rules as well. Parents and teachers need to check the laws in their communities to learn local rules for sidewalk riding. Things to tell children riding on the sidewalk include warning them to watch for cars coming out of or turning into driveways.

Caution children to stop at corners of sidewalks and streets to look for cars and to make sure the drivers see them before they cross. Warn them to enter a street at a

35

corner and not between parked cars. Tell them to alert pedestrians that they are close or passing by saying, “Excuse me,” or “Passing on your left.” Or, they can use a bell or horn.

Learning basic riding skills and consideration for other people is important even when riding on the sidewalk close to home and a good foundation for the years when they will ride in the street and in traffic away from home.

Five Basic Bicycle Safety Rules

These bicycle safety songs are built around five basic rules:

Always wear a bike safety helmet. Don‟t ride barefoot or wear sandals or flip flops. Don‟t ride double or do stunt riding. Check your bicycle for mechanical problems. Watch out for potholes, broken glass, gravel, puddles, leaves, dogs or

anything else that might be a danger to you and your bicycle.

Ride, Ride, Ride Your Bike

(To the tune of Row, Row, Row, Your Boat)

Ride, ride, ride your bike

Down to the end of your driveway,

Carefully, carefully, carefully, carefully,

Look both ways before you ride away.

Ride, ride, ride your bike

Safely down the street,

Carefully, carefully, carefully, carefully

Don‟t hit people that you meet.

Page 36: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

36

Ride, ride, ride, your bike,

Wearing shoes and socks,

Carefully, carefully, carefully, carefully,

Don‟t wear sandals or flip flops.

The children can act out the song with motions or finger plays. At the end of each verse, ask them a question, such as: Why do you have to look both ways at the end of your driveway? Why should you watch out for people when you are riding your bicycle? Why shouldn‟t you wear sandals or flip flops when you ride your bike?

Put on Your Bicycle Helmet

(To the tune of Put on Your Old Grey Bonnet)

Put on your bicycle helmet with the chin straps upon it,

Before you ride out into the street,

Look out for cars in driveways,

Don‟t ride onto highways,

Use both your hands and feet.

Put on your bicycle helmet with the chin straps upon it,

Keep your eyes and ears open while you ride,

Watch for bumps and potholes,

Avoid the dog with the cold nose,

Ride around him far and wide.

Page 37: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

37

This song can be a springboard for discussion of the hazards that the children might encounter while bicycle riding and what they can do about potential dangers including dogs, potholes, broken curbs.

Bicycle Blues

(To the tune of London Bridge is Falling Down)

John‟s bicycle is falling apart,

Falling part, falling apart,

John‟s bicycle is falling apart,

He needs to get a new start.

John and his dad tune up his bike,

Tune up his bike, tune up his bike,

John and his dad tune up his bike,

Now his wheels are both alike!

Jane‟s bicycle needs lots of care,

Lots of care, lots of care,

Jane‟s bicycle needs lots of care,

So she fills her tires with air.

Amy‟s brakes are squealing and squeaking,

Squealing and squeaking,

Squealing and squeaking,

Amy‟s brakes are squealing and squeaking,

She takes them to the bike shop for tweaking.

Andy‟s bike seat turns around and around,

Around and around, around and around,

Andy‟s bike seat turns around and around,

He tightens it to stay off the ground!

This song can be used to introduce a discussion about the importance of taking care of your bicycle and going to bicycle rodeos.

We All Fall Down!

(To the tune of Ring Around the Rosie)

Riding double is risky,

In case your bike gets frisky,

Down, down, down, down,

You both land on the ground.

Riding without hands is dumbo,

You can take a nasty tumble,

Down, down, down, down,

You have the lumpiest head in town!

Wheelies and wobbles to goof around,

Can only produce a single sound,

OW! OW! OW!OW!

Page 39: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

39

Look at all the bruises we found!

The children can do finger plays and act out this song that emphasizes the importance of safe bike riding.

These songs are a fun way to teach young children the basics of bicycle safety and reinforce them without pain and tuning out.

Pumpkins are a fun part of autumn and Halloween and Thanksgiving. Here are some songs to sing about pumpkins while you learn more about them.

Pumpkins Have Different Names Just Like People

The Greeks called large melons pepons. French people changed pepons into pompons. English people changed pompon to pumpion. American colonists changed pumpion into pumpkin.

Every Pumpkin Has Great Pumpkin Possibilities

Every Halloween night Linus van Pelt sits in the pumpkin patch waiting for the Great Pumpkin. Linus believes that the Great Pumpkin visits the most sincere pumpkin patch and leaves presents that he chooses. Linus says that the Great Pumpkin is different from Santa Claus because he brings gifts that he chooses and not gifts that children ask him to bring.

Harry Potter and his friends at Hog Warts love pumpkin juice and drink gallons of it. Both Native Americans and Pilgrims grew great pumpkins in their pumpkin patches and ate pumpkins, including their juice.

Pumpkin Juice

(To the Tune of Jingle Bells)

Pumpkin juice,

Pumpkin juice,

It feels good in my tum,

Linus drinks it in the pumpkin patch,

Harry Potter drinks a hearty batch,

Before every Quidditch match,

Pumpkin juice without an end,

But the best thing about pumpkin juice,

Native Americans and Pilgrims Grew And Ate Pumpkins

Native Americans cut pumpkins into strips and dried them in the sunshine. They wove some of the pumpkin strips into mats and they roasted others over open fires and ate them. In the spring of 1621, Native Americans Samoset and Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to plant pumpkin seeds, and grow and harvest them. The colonists and the Native Americans enjoyed boiled pumpkin at the first Thanksgiving celebration in the autumn of 1621. Colonists invented a primitive kind of pumpkin pie by slicing off the pumpkin top, removing the seeds and filling the insides with milk, spices, and honey. Then they baked it in hot ashes.

Jack-o-lanterns Alias Pumpkins

For hundreds of years people have been making jack-o-lanterns for Halloween because of an Irish myth about a man called 'Stingy Jack."Jack was so stingy he tricked the Devil and to get even, the Devil sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put his coal into a carved out turnip and he has been traveling the earth with it ever since. The Irish began to call Jack and his turnip "Jack of the Lantern," and then they shortened it to "Jack O' Lantern."

Pumpkins Orange

(Sing to the tune of “Where is Thumbkin?”)

(The children can draw on paper or on their jack-o-lanters while they are singing or before they start drawing)

Pumpkins orange, pumpkins orange,

Draw a nose,

Draw a nose,

Halloween is coming, Halloween is coming,

Draw a nose like a rose, a nose like a rose.

Pumpkins orange, pumpkins orange,

Draw two eyes, draw two eyes,

Halloween is coming, Halloween is coming,

Draw eyes round with surprise, round with surprise.

Make them grow out to here, grow out to here!

Pumpkins orange, pumpkins orange,

Make one mouth too, make one mouth too,

Halloween is coming, Halloween is coming,

Holler BOO! Holler BOO!

Jack-o-Lanterns Come to America

Even if Stingy Jack is just a story, people all over the world began carving their own versions of Jack's lanterns using turnips or potatoes .The British people used large beets for their jack-o-lanterns. They put their carved vegetables into their windows or doors or on front steps to scare away Stingy Jack himself or other people or animals they didn't want around.

When people came from Europe to live in American, they brought their jack-o-lantern custom with them and they soon discovered that pumpkins made perfect jack-o-lanterns. So you see, pumpkins have a history just like people do. Sing about their history while you are carving them and after you eat a piece of pumpkin pie!

Scratchy Scarecrow

(To the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Scratchy scarecrow flaps his arms,

In the field on Mr. Mann‟s farm,

He works hard each and every day,

To scare the corn eating crows away!

Then one frosty autumn morn,

The scarecrow took his eyes off the corn,

The crows hurried eating up and down the rows

While the scarecrow scratched the itch at the end of his toes.

Action Songs About the Busy Lives of Autumn Leaves

Leaves have busy lives just like people do. They make food for the trees, they provide warm blankets for plants in the winter and they create fall fun.

Leaves have busy days, weeks, and months. They change with the seasons and help new plants grow. In the spring and summer they make the food that the tree needs to grow. Some of the cells in the leaf have chlorophyll and chlorophyll is what makes the color of the leaf green. Chlorophyll uses the energy of the sun to change carbon dioxide and water to sugar and starch which is food for the tree. Besides green, there are yellow, orange, and red pigments in the leave cells, but in the summer green is the most widespread color.

Leaves Show Their True Colors

Then fall comes. The days grow shorter and the temperature is warm during the day and cold at night. The leaves stop making food. The chlorophyll stops working and the green color in the leaves disappears. When the green disappears, the yellow, orange and red pigments in the leaves show off their colors.

Leaf Blooming Song

(To the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)

The green has disappeared,

The green has disappeared,

I‟m a mountain ash tree and a fine fellow,

Look at my bright yellow.

Page 48: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

48

The green has disappeared,

The green has disappeared,

I‟m an orange maple that glows so bright,

I look like a fire at night.

The green has disappeared,

The green has disappeared,

I‟m a pin oak tree my red lasts long

After the maple leaves have gone.

My green can still be found,

My leaves aren‟t on the ground,

I‟m an evergreen, I‟m long and lean,

And I bloom all year around.

It’s Time for the Leaves to Leave

Every leaf has a special layer at the bottom to help it fall. When the time of autumn comes for the leaf to leave the tree, the cells in this layer of the leaf grows like a bubble gum bubble, and the leaf doesn‟t get as much food from the tree as it did in spring and summer. Soon, the entire bottom layer of the leaf is blocked and a tear line like a dotted paper tearing line appears and moves down. Eventually, the leaf blows away or falls off the tree.

Page 49: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

49

The Leaves Dance Off The Trees

(To the Tune of Mary Had A Little Lamb)

(Children can draw or use different colored leaves and dance the Leaf Color Dance. Or each child can take a different colored leaf and do an individual leaf dance)

I‟m dancing, dancing from my tree,

I‟m twirling free, twirling free,

I‟m dancing, dancing from my tree,

Will you color dance with me?

Fall is the time for color clothes,

Red coat, red nose, red coat, red nose,

Fall is the time for color clothes,

Dance with me on rainbow toes.

Red and yellow, orange too,

Orange too, orange too,

Red and yellow orange too,

Let‟s dance up to the sky so blue!

50

Some Leaves Don’t Leave

Evergreen trees like pines and firs don‟t shed their leaves or needles in winter. The cells contain compounds that work like anti-freeze and the outside of the needles are covered with a thick wax winter coat. Evergreen leaves often last for years before they fall in favor of new leaves.

What Do You Do With Leaves on the Ground?

(To the tune of London Bridge is Falling Down) (The children can act out this song while they sing.)

What do you do with leaves on the ground?

Leaves on the ground, leaves on the ground,

What do you do with leaves on the ground?

Rake them into a big mound!

What do you do with leaves in a mound?

Leaves in a mound, leaves in a mound,

What do you do with leaves in a mound?

Jump in them and scatter them around!

What do you do with a leaves in a mound

That have been scattered around, scattered around,

Bury yourself in them and make a crunchy nest,

And settle down for a winter‟s rest.

Page 51: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

51

Leaves on the Ground

When leaves settle on the ground, natural organisms including bacteria and earthworms break them down. The broken down leaves feed their nutrients to the soil and become part of the humus layer on the forest floor. They soak up rain and make snug homes for grubs. People use leaves for mulch that provides a warm blanket for seeds and plants during the winter and encourages them to grow early in the spring.

Snowflake Songs to Sing While Making a Snowman – It‟s „Sno Joke

Each snowflake that you see dancing on the street or whirling in the wind has its own unique shape and it is different from all other snowflakes. Snowflakes are individual, but they join together as they are falling to the ground to make bigger snowflakes.

Snowflakes - A Biography

The life of a snowflake begins as a wisp of water vapor in the air. The water vapor comes from oceans, lakes, and rivers. The water vapor comes from plants and people breathing into the air. High above the ground, water vapor condenses onto dust particles in the air. It condenses onto multitudes of minute droplets and each droplet contains at least one dust particle. Clouds are made up of hundreds of these tiny droplets.

In the winter, the snow making clouds mostly consist of liquid water droplets, even when the temperature is below freezing. As the clouds get colder, the droplets do start to freeze, but this doesn't happen until about 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and all of the droplets don't freeze at once. When an individual droplet freezes, it becomes a small particle of ice surrounded by the rest of the liquid water droplets in the cloud. The ice grows as water vapor condenses on its surface, forming a snowflake. All snowflakes are made up of ice crystals and all snowflakes have six sides.

Page 53: Silly Songs to Make You Smile and Sing! · the world. According to Sesame Street lore, Rubber Duckie is more than 41 years old, because Jim Henson bought the original Rubber Duck

53

As snow falls, snowflakes connect to make bigger snowflakes. The average snowflake falls at a speed of 3.1 miles per hour and billions of snowflakes fall during one snowstorm.

Snowflake Song

(To the Tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)

Snowflakes gather in the sky,

They crowd together and then they fly,

Snowflakes somersault for fun,

They land on my coat and hat one by one!

Snowflakes pile up on my toes,

Snowflakes melt on the end of my nose,

Snowflakes hop and skip on my hair,

Snowflakes freeze my skin where it's bare!

Snowflakes slide between my fingers,

They nip me with a cold bite that lingers,

Snowflakes cover my boots by the ton,

Snowflakes melt when I stick out my tongue!

I'm Like a Snowflake

(To the Tune of London Bridge is Falling Down)

I'm like a snowflake,

There's one of me, one of me, one of me,

I'm like a snowflake,

There's one of me,

I'm proud as I can be!

I see a job that takes two,

That takes two, that takes two,

I see a job that takes two,

What should a snowflake do?

As snowflakes fall they join together,

Join together, join together,

As snowflakes fall they join together,

Together they work much better.

Snowflakes together form a swarm,

Form a swarm, form a swarm/

Snowflakes together form a swarm,

And they make a huge snowstorm!

Snowflake Places

Stampede Pass in Washington State is the snow capital of the United States. Every year about 430 inches of snow falls there.

Snow at the North and South Pole reflects heat into space. This happens because the ice acts like a mirror with the heat of the sun and the heat bounces off the ice and into space.

Snowflakes are often partially pink in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The soil is red clay and the wind blows red dust from the soil into the air, and the clouds absorb it. When the clouds are snow clouds, they discharge pink tinted snow. Snirt is dirty snow that flies off the dusty Canadian prairies.

In countries where coal is still used in factories and homes, snowflakes often come from the heavens tinged with black or gray. The coal dust enters the air, the clouds absorb it, and the snow returns to the earth wearing shades of black.

The state of Montana in the United States holds the record for the largest snowflakes ever recorded. Snowflakes that fell there were 15 inches in diameter.

Snowflake Places

It snows in Idaho and Maine.

Idaho and Maine,

It snows in northern Spain!

Snowflake People

Citizens in Bethel, Maine, built the World's Tallest Snowman in 1999. It was 113 feet, 7 inches tall. Again in winter 2008, Bethel, Maine citizens set another world record, this time building the World's Tallest Snow woman, who stood 122 feet, one inch tall. She was named Olympia Snowe Woman, after Olympia Snowe, the United States Senator representing Maine.

Snow is suitable for packing to make snowmen and snowwomen when it reaches its melting point and becomes moist and compact. Powdered snow won't stick to itself, so it is very difficult to make a snowperson out of powdered snow. The best time to build a snow person is usually the next warmest afternoon directly following a large snowfall. Making a snowperson by rolling several large snowballs and joining them with snow is the most common method. Some people dress the snowperson with a vest or a scarf. They make features with rocks, coal, sticks, and carrots.
