SILGAMission Statement:

“The purpose of the Seabrook Island Ladies Golf Association (SILGA) is to provide competitive, social, educational, and philanthropic opportunities to encourage, support and promote women’s golf and to always inspire good sportsmanship and congeniality among golfers.”

In accordance with our mission, SILGA offers Seabrook Island Club (SIC) women golfers’ opportunities to golf with others in a variety of ways. Each week, casual rounds of golf are organized on Mondays and Thursdays, and competitive league games are played on Wednesdays. Annual and inter-club tournaments are arranged for additional competitive handicap play. SILGA also offers programs for their members to develop various golf skills and interests. In addition to the clinics and lessons run by SIC’s professional golf staff, SILGA offers Buddy and Mentoring programs which are explained further in this handbook. Please enjoy using this handbook to find out more about SILGA and its members, 2021 events and programs, and eligibility for participation.

Questions & AnswersHow do I join SILGA?Signing up for SILGA is easy: simply send an email to [email protected]. Explain that you want to become a SILGA member and provide us with your basic contact information (phone number and personal email address).

What will it cost to join? The annual dues for SILGA are $25. Once the Seabrook Island Club gets your information, they will bill your Club statement for this amount, and your name will be added to our membership roster.

What are the benefits of joining SILGA?First and foremost, SILGA membership gives you access to a series of tournaments and events designed to appeal to lady golfers of all levels. Our events range from casual golf events and “major” tournaments, competitive weekly games to “fun” scrambles. We also offer opportunities to learn more about pace of play, golf etiquette, and rules, as well as skill development clinics. These activities are intended to give you a chance to improve your game, play competitively, make new friends and enjoy what Seabrook Island has to offer both on and off the “links.”

How do I find out about SILGA events? In addition to the calendar of events listed in this handbook, there are several ways to find out about SILGA events:

• Email: Weekly SILGA EBlasts• Websites: SILGA.org and seabrookisland.com• Mobile apps: SIC app and Golf Genius app

The Pro Shop can assist you in showing you how to use these various options for signing up for events.

Should I play 9 holes or 18 holes?A secret to any golfer fully enjoying this sport is to find the right niche. Each weekly SILGA game is made up of players with varying handicaps and skill levels. Playing 9 holes is a good way to start for new golfers or those returning to the game after an absence of time. The play is relaxing, more casual, and there is a shorter time commitment (2 hours). Playing 18 holes is suitable for those who want to gain more experience, participate in fun competitive games and are willing to commit 4 hours to complete their game. If you are not sure where to begin, contact a SILGA officer who can talk to you about these options in more detail.

Do I need a handicap? To enjoy all that SILGA can offer, it is important to have a USGA handicap. All SILGA events that award monetary prizes, such as Wednesday Challenges and other annual outings, require a handicap. Handicaps make the game fair for everyone and allow golfers at different levels to play with each other on equal terms.

Handicaps are calculated using a GHIN (Golf Handicap Information Network) Mobile app on your phone. On this app, you can post scores and see your stats. If you have not established a handicap yet, contact the Pro Shop to get your GHIN number and find out how to download the GHIN app. You only need to post scores from a total of 54 holes (any combination of 9 or 18 hole rounds) to obtain a handicap. Once your handicap is established you will then record your scores every time you play to ensure it is accurate and up to date.

Which tee box should I use?The USGA encourages players to play tees based on their drive length. The best way for a player to choose the right tee box is to look at their average distance they hit their driver. A general rule of thumb to determine which tee box is right for you is if you hit your driver under 200 yards, play from the closest tee. If you hit from 200+ yards the next farthest tee.

Other Ladies Golf AssociationsIf you enjoy competition and/or the opportunity to meet and play with other golfers with similar handicaps, there are additional opportunities to do so through local and state-wide ladies golf associations. Seabrook Island Club is a member of the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association (WSCGA), Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and Charleston Area Ladies Golf Association (CALGA). Refer to the information below for a brief recap of each organization, general participation requirements, contacts/links to schedules and information on how to sign up.

CGAThe Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) is a not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1909. Its mission is to promote and to protect

the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to clubs and golfers. You must maintain a residence in either North Carolina or South Carolina and have a current USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club to participate in events. For additional information and for a schedule of events, refer to cga.golfgenius.com or contact Cathy Martin.

WSCGAThe Women’s South Carolina Golf Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1949 and membership is made up of South Carolina Golf Clubs

throughout the state. WSCGA one day tournaments do not require participants to be a resident of South Carolina and the maximum handicap index allowed is 40.4. Championship tournaments require participants to be a permanent legal resident of South Carolina for a minimum of six months prior to the championship and a maximum handicap index of 36 is required. For additional information and for a schedule of events, refer to www.wscga.org/results.html or contact Cathy Martin, WSCGA representative.

CALGAThe Charleston Area Ladies Golf Association (CALGA) was formed in 1974 to promote the game of golf and to foster fellowship. Events are

scheduled at member clubs in the Charleston area and are generally scheduled on the 3rd Monday or Tuesday each month. SILGA membership is required to participate and the maximum handicap index allowed is 40.4. For additional information and for a schedule of events, refer to www.charlestonlga.org or contact Tori Langen, CALGA representative.

SILGA ProgramsSILGA Programs are offered to league members who wish to enjoy the game of golf and play on a regular basis. These programs are not meant as a substitute for professional instruction but are an aid to getting the most enjoyment from your game and the league. Due to current safety restrictions, these programs will be managed on an individual basis. If interested, please contact Diane Eberhard for further information.

BUDDY PROGRAM: This program is designed for members returning to golf or beginners who desire to play more golf on a routine basis and meet more SILGA ladies. A Buddy will golf with you and help with any etiquette and pace of play questions while introducing you to other golfers with similar skill levels. Whether interested in 9 or 18 holes, this is a great way to get comfortable playing golf with others and learning about the league from an experienced member.

MENTORING PROGRAM: This program is for members who are interested in playing golf in competitive games. Regardless of your handicap, this program is for members who want to gain confidence in golf etiquette, pace of play, course management, and knowledge of golf rules. Members are eligible for this program if they have an established handicap and play 18 holes on a regular basis. A mentor will golf with you and assist with pace, etiquette, and the rules of golf in real time situations. This program will help members to manage their game and enjoy competitive games with confidence.

Seabrook Island Club - Local Rules

No Play ZonesThese areas exist on holes 15, 16 and 17 on Ocean Winds. The penalty areas are marked by red or yellow stakes with green tops. The contours of the hazards do not necessarily conform to a straight line between the stakes. To further define the hazard boundaries, it must be inferred that the line of the hazard should conform to the unmown grass or vegetation that is approximately between the hazard stakes. Play from within the No Play Zone is prohibited. If the ball lies within the No Play Zone, the player must take a penalty stroke and proceed under Rule 17.1. If the ball does not lie within the No Play Zone, but the player must stand in that area to play the next stroke, he must take relief (without penalty) no closer to the hole such that the stroke may be played without standing in the No Play Zone.

Alternative to Stroke and DistanceWhen a player’s ball cannot be found or is thought to be out of bounds, the player may proceed as follows and apply two penalty strokes:   take relief by dropping their ball in an area between (a) the point where the ball is believed to have come to rest (if lost) or crossed the out of bounds line (if OB) and (b) a point established by moving laterally to the edge of the fairway.  The ball must be dropped in the fairway of the hole being played, within 2 club lengths of the edge of the rough but not nearer the hole (see Rule 14.3).

Seabrook Island Club - Local Rules

Sprinkler Heads Close to Putting GreenRelief from interference by an abnormal course condition (immovable obstruction) may be taken under Rule 16.1. In addition, if a ball lies off the putting green but not in a penalty area and an abnormal course condition on or within two club lengths of the putting green and within two club lengths of the ball intervenes on the line of play between the ball and the hole, the player may take relief as follows:

The ball must be lifted and dropped at the nearest point to where the ball lay that (a) is not nearer the hole, (b) avoids intervention and (c) is not in a penalty area or on a putting green.

The ball may be cleaned when lifted.

Ocean Winds #15 Tee ShotA drop area is available on #15 as an additional option for balls hit into the fronting penalty area.

Pace of Play Tips{Excerpted from USGA’s suggested tips for improving pace of play:

https://www.usga.org/pace-of-play.../tips-and-suggestions-for-improving-pace-of-play}

Pace of Play is an important concept all golfers need to apply to their game if golf rounds and clubs like ours are to run efficiently.  Playing at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the course. It is simply about being more efficient with your time, as well as everyone else’s. Here are some simple tips for improving pace of play:

Start smart:  Make a point to arrive at the tee early with your golf equipment in order, ready to play. Have essentials on hand like tees, gloves and appropriate clothing for the day’s weather conditions. Always carry two balls with you in the event you need to hit a provisional.  And remember, if you come early enough to practice your swing and your putting, you are less likely to need multiple “practice” swings during your round.

Page 13: SILGA · 2021. 2. 25. · to golf or beginners who desire to play more golf on a routine basis and meet more SILGA ladies. A Buddy will golf with you and help with any etiquette and

Minimize your time on the tee:    “Hit when ready.”    If you think your original ball might be lost or out of bounds,  save time by playing a provisional ball. Always be sure to declare you are hitting a “provisional” ball.

Plan your shot before you get to your ball:  Always think ahead. Determine your yardage and make your club selection before it is your turn to play. You can do this while others are playing, without disruption. If you’re not certain which club to use, bring 2 or 3 clubs with you and walk to your ball, line up and take a practice swing as long as you are not in the way of anyone hitting the ball.  Once you hit the ball, hold onto your clubs in the cart until you reach the next place where you or your partner will hit.  Return those clubs to the bag at the same time you are selecting clubs for your next shot.  If done for each shot and by each player, returning clubs while you select your next clubs can speed play significantly.  Even a small step like this saves time.

Keep your pre-shot routine short:  Most importantly, be ready to hit when it is your turn. Try to take no more than one practice swing, then set up to the ball and play your shot. Be efficient by moving toward your next shot promptly.

Aim to play in 40 seconds:  From club selection to pre-shot routine to club to ball impact, strive to hit your shot in 40 seconds when it is your turn to play. Help keep play moving at a brisk pace.

Develop an eye for distance:   If you need to determine precise distance, try to find a yardage marker before you reach your ball, or step off the yardage on the way to your ball. If others you are playing with have a range finder/GPS, you can ask that player  for yardage information without penalty.

Page 14: SILGA · 2021. 2. 25. · to golf or beginners who desire to play more golf on a routine basis and meet more SILGA ladies. A Buddy will golf with you and help with any etiquette and

When sharing a cart, use a buddy system:  Don’t wait in the cart while your cartmate hits and then drive to your ball. Where appropriate, get out and walk to your ball with a few clubs. Be ready to play when it is your turn and then let your cartmate pick you up. Or, drive to your ball after you drop your cartmate off and then pick him or her up after you hit.

Be helpful to others in your group:  Follow the flight of all tee shots, not just your own. Once in the fairway, help others look for their ball if you already know the location of yours. Volunteer to fill in a divot or rake a bunker for another player if needed. Be ready to attend the flagstick for others.

Keep up with the group in front of you:  Your correct position on the course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you. Arrive at your next shot just before the group in front leaves the area in front of you. If you are consistently not able to keep up and a gap opens in front of you, invite the group behind you to play through, irrespective of the number of players in the group.

Page 15: SILGA · 2021. 2. 25. · to golf or beginners who desire to play more golf on a routine basis and meet more SILGA ladies. A Buddy will golf with you and help with any etiquette and

Be efficient on the putting green:  Mark your ball, lift and clean it when you arrive at the putting green so you will be ready to replace it when it is your turn to play. You can usually line up your putt while others are putting, without disturbing them. Leave your clubs on the side of the putting green closest to the next tee, and leave the green promptly after holing out. Wait until the next tee to record your score.

Remember to pick up your ball if you are “out of the hole.” If not in an individual stroke play competition, it is generally OK to pick up your ball and move on to the next hole if you are “out” of a hole and want to maintain pace of play. This applies in match play and many forms of stroke play, including Stableford and best-ball play.

Events & Terms DefinedBest Ball Events: Best ball events can be played using 2-, 3- or 4-person teams. Each player on the team plays her own golf ball throughout the round, and on each hole the low score (or “best ball”) of the group serves as the team score.

Net Double Bogey - Maximum Hole Score: A score equal to the par of a hole plus two strokes and adjusted for any handicap strokes applied on that hole. A net double bogey is a player’s maximum hole score for handicap purposes (see Rule 3.1).

Handicap Index: Your handicap index is not meant to reflect your average score, it’s meant to reflect your best potential.

Major Tournaments: The maximum handicap allowed in these tournaments is 36. Players with higher handicaps are welcome to play, but the highest handicap used for tournament players will not exceed 36. All ladies playing in a major SILGA tournament must have a current handicap index established by the USGA. Unless specified in the tournament, maximum hole scores are not allowed. Players must play each hole to completion.

Match Play vs. Stroke Play: In stroke play, golfers accumulate strokes over the course of 9 or 18 holes. The golfer with the fewest strokes at the completion of the round wins. In match play, each hole is a separate competition. The player with the fewest strokes on an individual hole wins that hole; the player winning the most holes wins the match. The stroke total for the 9 or 18 holes simply doesn’t matter in match play. Stroke play is more a player vs. the course approach; match play is directly player vs. player, or side vs. side.

Scramble or Captain’s Choice: A scramble is usually played with 4-person teams, but 2- or 3-person scrambles are popular, too. Each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.
