Signposting
What is Signposting?
It is a way of pointing someone in the right direction.
Signposting is a way of drawing attention to a particular issue, topic or service.
How do you signpost?
Let your group know about important services at one of your group meetings. You can also give them a Making Connections leaflet for them to take away.
Let your group know about your positive experiences with services-how could using these services sooner helped you? ( Please remember that not everyone's experiences are the same -even if a service did not help you, it could help someone else).
Show your group different services on a campus tour.
If someone has a specific problem which
you know a certain service deals with,
mention it to them and explain how it can
help.
Make a ‘quick facts’ sheet for your group so they know what each service does and where they
need to go if they need help.
What should you avoid doing?
If a student requests total confidentiality (i.e. they don’t
want you to tell anyone) you can’t give it because you cannot predict what they will tell you. If a student wants this level of confidentiality
you should direct them to the correct service.
It is not your job to solve students problems. If someone has a problem that you are not trained to deal with you should direct them to the correct service. Don’t try to handle it yourself!
When should you signpost?
If you notice a student is in need of help or advice.
When a student asks you for help
with a problem you are not trained to
deal with.
At the beginning of the programme to
make students aware of particular
services.
