Dear Colleagues:

It is our pleasure to cordially welcome you to the 20th Joint Meeting 'Signal Transduction - Receptors, Mediators and Genes' in the Leonardo Hotel in Weimar.

This year’s meeting is jointly organized by the STS in association with our long-standing partners, the German Societies for Immunology (DGfI), for Cell Biology (DGZ) and for Pharmacology (DGP) and the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM). We once again thank the SFB 854 'Molecular Organisation of Cellular Communication in the Immune System' (chair: Burkhart Schraven, Magdeburg) for its contribution. This year, the Netherlands Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NVBMB) joins the meeting for the first time.

One successful concept in organizing a highly attractive meeting each year is to offer focused symposia presenting state-of-the-art science on changing topics. The special focus of this year’s meeting, 'Cells and Molecules in Motion', was jointly organized by the GBM study groups 'Biochemical Pharmacology and Toxicology' (Klaudia Giehl, Gießen) and 'Receptors and Signal Transduction' (Karlheinz Friedrich, Jena), the DGZ study group 'Signal Transduction' (Ralf Hass, Hannover), and the DGfI study group 'Signal Transduction' (Ingo Schmitz, Braunschweig and Friederike Berberich-Siebelt, Würzburg). We also thank the DGfI study group 'Biology of B Lymphocytes' (Jürgen Wienands, Göttingen) for financial and scientific support. Renowned invited experts will open each workshop with an introductory keynote lecture. All other oral presentations are selected from the submitted scientific contributions. Moreover, the poster sessions provide the opportunity for literally all other participants to introduce their work to the plenum in the framework of the traditional 'one minute-one transparency' presentations.

We are pleased and especially honored to announce the award lecture given by Prof. Dr. Tak Wah Mak (University of Toronto, Canada) who will receive this year’s STS/CCS Honorary Medal for his lifetime contributions and milestone discoveries in the fields of immunology, signal transduction and cancer biology. The laudation will be

given by Klaus Pfeffer from the University of Düsseldorf.

Our particular thanks go to all industrial sponsors who support the STS Meeting 2016. The General Assembly of the Signal Transduction Society will take place on Thursday, November 10th, 2016, starting at 2pm. All members of the STS are cordially invited to discuss the past, presence and future of the Society. Those of you who want to join the STS will be able to do so by registering online at http://www.sigtrans.de.

The aim of the STS to promote and encourage the exchange of scientific ideas and to foster the education of young scientists in the highly dynamic field of cellular signal transduction has been pursued successfully for 20 years now. Thus, we think this is a good reason to celebrate our anniversary with all of you with a Conference Party on Thursday, November 10th after dinner in the lecture hall. Join us, enjoy the evening with the 'Crosstalk Puzzle' raffle to start with, continue on the dance floor with live music presented by the local band ‚Paolo Macho’, and enjoy the STS-cocktail and other beverages in a relaxed atmosphere.

The 20th Joint Meeting 'Signal Transduction - Receptors, Mediators and Genes' is traditionally

organized as a Joint Meeting of the Signal Transduction Society (STS) with 'Signal Transduction'

study groups of the German Societies for Cell Biology (DGZ), for Immunology (DGfI), for

As a good tradition, each year the STS provides 10 travel grants to young fellows to attend the

meeting and present their data to the public. For the anniversary meeting, however, we had 15

applications and started to discuss how to select proper candidates. In parallel, we thought of

attracting some additional travel funding from our industrial partners. We have to admit that we

were quite overwhelmed by the instant and more than positive feedback. The STS council is very

grateful to all 'SILVER SPONSORS' who allow us to award a total of 15 stipends to talented

The 20th Anniversary of the Joint Meeting

'Signal Transduction: Receptors, Mediators and Genes'

In the late 1990s, colleagues from various disciplines of molecular biosciences have become increasingly interested in the developing research area of signal transduction. In 1996, the speaker of the DGfI Study Group 'Signal Transduction' Ottmar Janssen teamed up with his colleague Ralf Hass from the DGZ to improve this situation and in spring 1997, Karlheinz Friedrich from the GBM joined to co-organize the first interdisciplinary conference on Signal Transduction in Germany at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institute in Langen. After 2 successful meetings at the Paul-Ehrlich Institute, the Meeting moved to Berlin and in 2001 found an almost ideal location at the Leonardo (former Hilton) Hotel in Weimar. Main purpose of the STS was and still is the development of an interdisciplinary forum for researchers who are deciphering signal transduction pathways. Although the overall ideas and the general concept of the meetings did not change so much, the STS was able to continuously improve its quality and outreach. We encourage investigators from all areas of signal transduction research to become members of the STS and to strengthen and shape the standing of this fascinating aspect of biomedical research.
