Purpose of today’s training
Our analysis of what students do well validates their knowledge of writing as it informs and directs our strategic, rigorous instructional decisions for whole groups, small groups and with individuals.
Simulation Training (Pilot)• This model is in development for state roll-out, a
writing support simulation (a way of teaching that totally immerses the learning into the teacher’s hands).
• Coaching for writing success• Transferring the information to the teacher as we
are coaching for student writing achievement (growth mindset instead of fixed mindset)
Introduce Support Tools• Modeling • Introduce Support Tools • model 3D/Elements Chart• understand how the paper functions
• Guided Instruction• Discuss Support Tools• peer discussion - How do these two documents support
each other?• How do they interface with the FSA Writing Rubric and
Florida Standards?
Prompt Modeling
• Prompt Modeling / Guided Instruction• Read the prompt• Read the stimulus text• Read the prompt again• Plan an essay
Was there enough information in the text to do the task that was required?
Annotation• Modeling • Annotate-Describe and Diagnose • sort LMH• choose samples• Identify anchors
• Guided Instruction • Annotate-Describe and Diagnose • sort LMH• choose samples• Identify anchors
Paradigm Shift The target for the best work ahead!
That was then…Historically, we have been great at identifying and supporting behaviors that prepare for a test - rather than prepare quality writing instruction.
This is now…When we consider expectations for success, we mean the level 4, grade 12 description.
Implications….
Strategic Writing InstructionHow to Identify the Teaching
Point
Students need many opportunities to develop effective composing strategies.
• Writing instruction happens through strategic writing exercises:
• Close reading• Exercises in graphic organizers• Cut and paste
• Writing instruction happens, at its best, through REvision.

group
Lesson ShareCollaboration• Groups present their lesson to whole group• At the end of lesson,• Huddle and Decide• What element was being taught?• “All answer” - Use white boards to record your groups
decision
