I. INTRODUCTION

• Introduce yourself and tell why you are teaching this class. • Ask participants introduce themselves and briefly tell why they are here. • Distribute Class Handout and review learning objectives (see bulleted list on handout) • Show Vol. 1 products and encourage participants to purchase them after class if they have not already done so.

II. SIGNING A. Share 3 ways SIGNING helps babies:

• Signing reduces frustration. Signing babies are happier and more secure. • Signing doesn’t prevent or delay talking. In fact, babies who sign learn to talk sooner and have bigger vocabularies, too. • Signing enhances intelligence. One study shows that children who signed as babies scored significantly higher on IQ tests at age 8 than children who didn’t sign.

B. Share 3 tips for getting started:

• Start with just a few signs. • Make the sign and say the word at the same time. • Be patient – learning happens over time

C. Sing the Baby Signing Time Theme Song: • Distribute Song Lyrics (optional) • Teach signs for BABY, SIGNING, and TIME

• Play DVD clip or song from CD and sign along Teaching Tip: The advantage of playing the DVD clip of the Theme Song is that your audience gets to “meet” Rachel and see how babies are drawn to her.

D. Teach signs from Volume 1: (typical first signs are indicated in purple): BANANA BIRD CAT CEREAL CRACKER DAD DIAPER DOG DRINK

EAT / FOOD FINISHED FISH FROG GRANDMA GRANDPA HORSE HURT

JUICE MILK MOM MORE POTTY WATER WHERE

E. Sing song(s): Distribute selected Song Lyrics and sing song(s) from the Vol. 1 CD: • “Eat and Drink”

• “The Pets I Love” • “More, More, More” • “Mom has a Mom” • “Diaper Dance”

F. Choose an activity: Select one (or more) of the following activities: Food Activity: BANANAS and CRACKERS and CEREAL, oh my! Take three bowls and hide a banana under one, a cracker under another, and some cereal pieces under another. Then ask, “WHERE is the BANANA? Is it here?” Raise the first bowl (which has the cereal under it) and shake your head no, saying, “No, that it is CEREAL under that bowl!” Then go to the second bowl which has the cracker under it and say, “WHERE is the CEREAL? Is it here?” Raise the second bowl, and say, “No! There is a CRACKER under this bowl.” Go to the last bowl and say, “WHERE is the CRACKER? Is it here?” Raise the last bowl and say, “There is a BANANA under the bowl!” Then, turn over all of the bowls and exclaim, “Oh, here is the BANANA! Here is the CRACKER! Here is the CEREAL! And now I am going to EAT them all up!” Pretend to eat the food in a silly way. Encourage families to play this game at home with their child.

Food Activity: BABY wants a DRINK! Get three clear plastic cups with lids. Fill one cup with a small serving of milk, one with juice and one with water. Put the cups on the floor next to a big baby doll and ask, “Which DRINK should we give the BABY? MILK, WATER, or JUICE?” Choose a parent-child pair and ask them to make the sign for MILK, WATER or JUICE to indicate their choice. Respond by pretending to give the baby a drink from the cup that was chosen. Repeat until everyone has chosen a drink for the baby. Stuffed Animal Activity: It’s time to EAT! Line up stuffed animals in a row. Have the first two face each other and pretend to speak for them, saying and signing, “Do you want to EAT?” Then pretend that the opposite animal says, “Yes, and let’s ask my other friend if he wants to EAT.” Turn each animal towards the next with the same question. Then start over and ask “Do you want a BANANA?” Then go through the line again, asking if they want some CEREAL, CRACKERS and MILK. Repeat until all of the animals have been asked. Encourage parents to use this pretend play activity at home to practice signs.

Stuffed Animal Activity: WHERE did he go? Put each stuffed animal in a paper sack. Choose an animal to find first, let’s say it’s the frog. Say “WHERE is the FROG?” Look in a sack and pull out the animal. If it is not the frog, say “Is this the FROG? No! Let’s put it back.” Place it back in the sack. Keep looking in the sacks until you find the frog. Cheer and clap, exclaiming, “Here is the FROG!” Let a child keep the frog. Continue until all the children have an animal. Literacy Activity: My SIGN Book Create a MY SIGN book that parents and their babies can start in class and complete at home. Give each participant a blank “book” made from 5 sheets of plain white copy paper, folded down the middle, or cut down the middle and stapled. As an option, purchase those small picture albums found in dollar stores. Provide magazines and non-toxic glue sticks to parents. Ask them to look through the magazine with their child. When they find an image that relates to a sign they know or want to know, they can tear out it out (or cut it out with blunt-edged scissors) and glue it into their book. Encourage parents to finish the project at home, adding photos of family members making the signs for the items included in their books. Literacy Activity: Let’s SIGN a story Pick one of these books to read to the group. Encourage participants to make the signs they have learned today when they hear those words in the story. From Head to Toe, by Eric Carle Snowballs, by Lois Ehlert Nicky’s Walk, by Cathryn Fadwell Wake up It’s Spring, by Lisa Campbell Ernst Family, by Helen Oxenbury Baby Signing Time Board Book, Vol. 1

III. TALKING (8 minutes) A. Share 3 ways TALKING helps babies:

• Children who hear more words do better in school. One study found that a significant factor in school success is the number of words children hear when they are young. Children from very talkative parents tended to do better in school. • Positive talk helps your child feel loved. Talking provides a natural opportunity to boost your child’s self-esteem. • Talking can enhance early learning. Asking questions and talking together as your child plays can boost language and thinking skills. (To learn more about this topic, read Meaningful Differences in the Everyday

Experience of Young American Children by Todd Risley and Betty Hart.) B. TALKING: Learning through the 5 senses Babies are focused on exploring the world through the five senses. A simple, yet powerful way for you to use TALK to boost your child’s early learning is to ask questions about what your child sees, smells, hears, feels or tastes. If your child isn’t talking yet, you will be asking the questions and giving the answers, too. Remember that hearing words is helping to build your child’s vocabulary and understanding of language, so it’s OK if you are doing all of the talking right now. Soon, your child will be able to use signs to participate in the conversation!

Let’s try it out. Point to your own shoes or to your child’s shoes. Now ask your baby some questions about the shoes. You might say “What color your shoe? Oh, your shoe is red. What color is my shoe? How does it feel” (Give participants time to interact with their babies.) IV. READING (8 minutes)

A. Share 3 ways READING helps babies: • Reading builds understanding of words. Babies learn through repetition. The more often they hear a particular word, the sooner they will understand it. • Reading rhyming books helps babies listen for specific sounds. Hearing the sounds within words is an important step toward reading readiness. • Reading books helps babies learn about the world. Books introduce important concepts such as numbers, letters, shapes, colors through words and pictures.

B. READING: Ask questions while you read Asking questions as you read aloud can help focus your child’s attention on a particular concept. You can help your child pick out a certain color, find a certain number of things, identify particular shapes, or talk about certain characters as you read. You know how children love to hear the same book over and over again? This might be great for your child’s development, but for us as parents, it can get a little boring to read a book for the 50th time! This strategy of asking questions to focus on a particular concept will help make repeated readings more fun for both you and your baby. You will read the same words every time, but you’ll ask different questions so the reading experience is just a little different – every time.

Let’s try it out. We’ll try this out with the book Goodnight Moon. There are so many things you can focus on in this book. For example, there’s a tiny white mouse on each spread. So after you read the words, you can ask your baby “WHERE is the little mouse? Can you find it? Oh, there it is! Can you point to the mouse?” You can choose to focus on a color, too. Let’s say it’s red. Every time you finish reading the words, ask your child to point to all the things he sees on the page that are red. Can you think of other concepts you can focus on in this book? Read the first few pages of the book and let parents answer. Possible answers include: • Sign MOON every time you see a moon in the book • Look for specific shapes (circles, squares, stripes, etc.) • Find things that come in pairs (mittens, shoes, socks, etc.) • Point to things on the page that can also be found in your child’s bedroom

V. Review (4 minutes) • Answer any questions parents may have (if time) • Quickly review Vol. 1 signs • Encourage participants to purchase Vol. 1 products • Homework for next class: Demonstrate two food signs and two drink signs
