You will combine knowledge and creativity to design plans that will produce social and economic value. Each year, students from every academic program submit ideas to the President’s Cup Business Plan Competition in pursuit of the funding to make those ideas happen. As a capstone experience, graduating art students design, promote and produce a solo show of their own work. From passion to vision, from innovation to execution, you will learn how to transform yourself and your world.

You will leave here with much more than knowledge from your chosen field. Internships, research opportunities, business plan competitions, gallery exhibitions, service learning projects and travel abroad provide you with the experiences that build both an education and a resume. Working with faculty members with years of first-hand professional experience, you learn the leadership, teamwork and communication skills that will sustain you from the first job after graduation through a lifelong career.

Our innovative curriculum prepares you for whatever life brings, from complex global problems to the changing demands of your career. From entrepreneurship to civilizations, from art to science, our core courses expand your knowledge beyond the boundaries of your major while our faculty expands your experience beyond the boundaries of the classroom. Raft down the American River while applying diverse types of knowledge to address its economic and environmental challenges—you learn by doing. This is education for a meaningful life.

At Sierra Nevada College, learning is not a spectator sport.

We are active learners. In your classes, you will do far more than simply listen. Case studies. Debates. Internships. You will be engaged in your education.

Sustainability is more than just green living. You will learn that healthy, renewable systems—social, economic, educational and environmental—are necessary to secure our shared future. Students sustain their community by running the recycling program and contribute to economic viability by conducting energy audits of campus buildings. Preserve. Sustain. Learn. Lake Tahoe is a living laboratory for analyzing water samples in the field, documenting animal behavior or tracking forest recovery after a wildfire. These experiences stay with you and become the foundation for lifelong learning. This is a sustainable education for a sustainable world.

AMANDA BADGER (‘12) Double MajorENTREPRENEURSHIPGLOBAL MANAGEMENT

Amanda was always an excellent student, but faculty saw she could be truly great. With her determination and their mentoring, Amanda is now ready to take on her plan for graduate school and a Ph.D. in finance. As an intern, she learned early stage venture capital and investing. She was on the winning team for the college President’s Cup Business Plan Competition in her junior year, and her studies and experience have taken her to the finals of the statewide contest, twice.

“The classes, students, and faculty have allowed me to accomplish more than I ever believed possible. Yes, it’s been challenging, but I wouldn’t change any of it. This college has changed me forever for the better.”

The Ski Business and Resort Management Guest Speaker Forum exposes students to top executives from the $3.5 billion ski industry.

Learn more about Business

Learn from faculty who have some of the most prestigious professional resumes in the business world.

After 30 years owning and managing ski resorts, Tim Cohee is in your classroom teaching you how to do it. Nineteen nearby resorts allow you to put knowledge into practice with an internship. Imagine guest speakers in your classroom: Presidents, CEO’s, and CFO’s answering your questions. Stop imagining. Whether it’s Ski Business, Entrepreneurship, or Marketing, there is a great faculty member here who will actively share knowledge in and out of the classroom. Take those new ideas and apply them in a World Cup internship, the international Glo-Bus Competition, and into your own business plan. Leave with an education, a plan, and a resume that prepares you to work anywhere in the world, even for yourself.

Our faculty trained to be scientists at some of the most prestigious colleges in the world. That they choose to live and teach here is no accident.

Amid granite walls, river gorges, mountain peaks, and protected forest land, we are a living lab. The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences—home to UC Davis’ Lake Tahoe research—was the first LEED Platinum certified laboratory in Nevada, and it is your home base for studies and research. And we mean real research with student symposiums to present those findings. From studying computer simulations of forest fires to actively documenting the after effects on the ecosystem in the field, you learn scientific methodology through practice. Internships with the US Geological Survey, marine biologists tracking great white sharks in South Africa, and studying Mayan ruins in Belize, all put classroom science into use. From medical school to a career in teaching, you are prepared for any science field.

SCIENCEWhether it’s Dr. Ellsworth’s class examining zooplankton in Lake Tahoe, or Dr. Levitan’s class installing monitoring equipment inside a beaver lodge, classroom science is always linked back to research.

Write for The Eagle’s Eye student newspaper and the Sierra Nevada Review, a literary magazine with a national distribution that has received National

Endowment for the Arts and Nevada Arts Council awards.

Accept the challenge to question what is right or wrong and define what counts as truth.

Then be prepared to defend and articulate your position with passion and skill in Dr. O’Bryan’s upper-division Ethics class. You will find inspiration from some of the great writers and thinkers of our time, like Professor Brian Turner—an award-winning poet and New York Times contributor. Present your research at Stanford’s undergraduate Psychology Symposium, attend the many professional writer’s workshops and readings, compete in a poetry slam, edit a literary review, and write for the school paper. And in the end—whether you are interested in becoming a psychologist or journalist—you will find your own voice and be fully prepared to take on the world’s most complex issues.

Operate an organic farm, navigate government regulations and laws, or create an after-school recreation program.

Combine knowledge from two or more different fields and apply your learning to provide innovative solutions to complex problems. Through off-site field research on the river you will find new perspective as you study the history and environment, and wrestle with the eco-conflicts between habitat, tourism, and government interests. Learn teamwork and cooperation while acting as a guide on a wilderness trek. With faculty guidance you develop a Service Learning Project, combining volunteer work with academic studies and interests. You create, plan, and initiate your vision combining service with rigorous research and leadership. For some graduates, it has become their life’s work.

STEPHEN COSTAS (‘12)

Double MajorOUTDOOR ADVENTURE LEADERSHIP AND PSYCHOLOGY SKI BUSINESS AND RESORT MANAGEMENT

Stephen arrived as a quiet freshman. That is hard to believe now. Stephen has become a leader among his peers. He not only engaged in opportunities, he carefully paired them with his classroom experience. He got involved: becoming Student Government President, travelling to South Africa as a Global Scholar, and leading Outdoor Adventure trips. He even turned an internship into a management position at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort.

“I found the motivation and inspiration to push myself and try new things. I discovered I could do more than I ever believed possible. And with faculty connections and help, I made it happen.”

FINE ARTS

Studios are open 24/7—students and faculty draw inspiration from one another while working side-by-side late into the night.

Create your art—then plan, publicize, and host your own show in the Tahoe Gallery.

You may not have realized how many types of art forms there are until you talk with Sheri Leigh O’Conner—fine arts chair, mentor, and nationally-renowned ceramist. She will encourage you to create a new art form by combining mediums or disciplines. Faculty will introduce you to visiting artists, new ideas, and ask you to stretch your view. In fact, you will learn far more than art theory and traditional applications from our practicing community of artists. You will be professionally prepared through a portfolio review with the entire art faculty and your own solo gallery opening.

From our classroom to your own in 5 years. You can choose to accelerate your bachelor’s degree to include a teaching license and a master’s degree.

Our strong graduate program in teacher education will prepare you to walk into a classroom and be ready to teach on your first day. Your interdisciplinary background in the liberal arts is the perfect foundation for teaching in elementary or secondary school. You learn how to become a great teacher by spending an entire semester in the classroom studying with a lead teacher and consulting with your personal mentor. Your final project is an action research-based thesis designed to improve a classroom practice or a professional project with tangible benefits to all teachers—such as developing new materials for helping children with special needs.

It’s a great place to live—three blocks to Lake Tahoe, in a national forest, on an easily accessible campus.

Whether you live in a campus residence hall with a spacious room and private bath, or nearby in the village, you are part of a close, active, academic community. Should we mention the great food? And even better, there is always something going on here to support the classroom experience—film festivals, cultural events, lectures from visiting scholars, poetry slams, and comedy nights to name a few. Local resorts host regular concerts and performances too. There are clubs for sustainability, golf, dance, climbing, and you are welcome to start your own. Organized student activities include hikes, bike rides, beach outings, and trips to nearby attractions like San Francisco and Yosemite. Reno’s international airport, shopping, and nightlife are only 35 miles away.

From service learning with Habitat for Humanity to international travel courses, from World Cup internships to cultural immersion trips, your choices are endless. You will find spectacular outdoor activities organized throughout the year and led by experienced guides. The adventures support curriculum and offer you the opportunity to try something new—in most cases for free. Quality outdoor gear including backpacks, snowshoes, tents, climbing shoes, and kayaks are also available for use on personal excursions.

We start each fall with a four-day Wilderness Orientation for incoming students, allowing you to bond and develop leadership skills while backpacking in the Eldorado National Forest. For students looking to balance a love for the outdoors with a great education, Sierra Nevada College is unrivaled.

One of the most successful college athletic programs in the nation, the women’s and men’s ski, snowboard, and freestyle teams dominate their field.

The ski team is a 19-time USCSA National Champion, while the snowboard team has won the title 6 years running. But not everyone here is a World Cup skier. In fact, you will find a wide spectrum of athletic abilities and interests. From rock climbers featured in National Geographic to our faculty versus student softball games, there is something for everyone. Intramural and club teams, mountain bike trails, and all the water sports Lake Tahoe has to offer are at your doorstep.

Students are provided with a membership to the award-winning Incline Recreation Center. It offers extensive cardiovascular facilities, an indoor pool, basketball courts, and aerobic classes. Additionally, there are championship golf courses and a tennis center. Go play.
