Show Me The Money Millions

Year 5 and 6 Daily Learning

Monday 29th June 2020

Money makes the world go around, or so they say. We would like to explore the topic of money with you in UKS2 and have decided to start our topic with a snapshot study of the Novel ‘Millions - The Not-So Great Train Robbery’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce. The story explores the importance of money and the problems surrounding it and is set in England ahead of (a fictional event) the change over of Sterling (£) to Euros (€), where talk of money seems to be everywhere. Below are some of the front covers the book sports, and the synopsis for you to read to gain an

understanding of what happens in the novel:

Literacy We would like you to read the extract below and reflect on the questions posed, explaining your reasoning, including as much detail as possible.

A train went past. A huge gust of oily air burst into the hermitage, making all the flaps flap. I looked out. The train had no windows. It was just a huge block of night on wheels, screaming past the holly bushes. As I watched, a little scrap of darkness seemed to get free of the big darkness and come rolling through the air towards me. It crashed into the front end of the hermitage, smashing the boxes flat and letting even more cold air in. It squatted on the flattened cardboard like a big leathery toad. I went over and touched it. It was a bag. It had come apart along the zip and its insides were spilling out. And its insides were money. It wasn’t a vision or a visitation as such. I suppose you could call it a sign. A big loud sign. It was money. Banknotes. Piles and piles of them. Thousands and thousands of pounds. Millions, even.

1. What would your first three thoughts be if ‘Millions’ landed at your feet in this way?

2. Who would be the first person you would share your discovery with and why?

3. Where is the first place you would go?

4. Explain three ways you would spend your money. Convince me these are the best possible ways to spend this money.

5. How would you feel if this happened to you and why?

Reading This week you could take a look at some of the websites below to find out more information about Frank Cotrell-Boyce, the author of Millions. We always find it very interesting to find out about our favourite authors lives, back stories and past work, why not look up some of your favourite authors and see if you can find out some new facts about them?

Anthony and Damien (The brothers and main characters in the book) really struggle to decide what to spend the money on and have many disagreements! If you had found this money, what would you spend it on?

So, financially, we had 229,370 pounds sterling. On the morning of 1st December this was worth 323, 056 Euros. It’s true that you can’t buy love or happiness with money, but it is interesting to see what you can buy. For instance, you could buy 15,390 pairs of Micro Turbo racers at £20.99 a pair. Or 3,756 Sky Patrol quick-charge, easy-to-fly remote-control helicopters at £85.99 each. Or 22,937 Airzookas (they fire balls of air at people). Or 43,159 kite-in-a-keyring sets. Or 5,736 table-top candy floss makers. Or 1,434 Shogun Nude BMXs. Or 2,699 Gameboy Advance Sps.

We would like you to rewrite the second paragraph, picking some of your favourite items. Remember to calculate how much they cost altogether and how many of each item you could buy! If you fancy a challenge, try converting the cost into Euros, does this change the amount of items you could buy?

Foundation *Spoiler Alert* The boys, with the help of their Dad decide the right thing to do is to donate the money to a charity. After participating in a school assembly in which Water Aid came to speak to the students, they decided that this was a worthwhile charity for their money!

Since I was the only honest member of the family, Dad said I could decide what we did with the money. And with the 20,345 new Euros we built 14 hand-dug wells in Northern Nigeria. Sometimes money can leave your hand and fall like water from a pipe on to the hot ground, and the dusty earth swallows it up and bursts into food and flowers for miles and miles around. And all the seeds and roots and lives that were lying dead in the ground spring all the way back to life.

Have a go at designing a poster to advertise the work that WaterAid undertake and asking for donations. This could resemble a poster that Anthony and Damien may have seen and that would have helped convince them that this was a worthy cause for their money. You could use the website (https://www.wateraid.org/uk/) to help you include some facts and details such as the WaterAid logo.

You’re Joking! What happened to the man who took the 5 o’clock train home? He had to give it back! We look forward to hearing some of your train/money jokes!

How to Record Learning

In terms of recording this learning, children can either use the pen and paper method or alternatively use Hwb (Office 365) to record their learning and then share with their class teacher – we’d love to see how you have got on! Share names are: Mr Coles (ColesM30), Miss Probert (ProbertL34), Miss Howes (HowesE13) and Mrs Bebb (BebbK16). The hyperlink below shows the learners how to share your learning with your class teacher. https://drive.google.com/file/d/11yCagbXnuoKcTT2k_XZjboDDLuAmM_wl/view Many thanks for everyone who has shared learning with us so far via Hwb. Best wishes to you all. Upper Key Stage Two Team. Mr Coles, Miss Probert, Miss Howes, Mrs Bebb and Mrs Davies.
