Artisan crafts blending resources & skills fromMana in Uttarakhand and Barmer in RajasthanAs part of its design intervention, hand holdingand confidence building initiatives, EPCH hassuccessfully brought several artisans and craftspersons into its fold and gradually introducedthem into the mainstream handicrafts industry. Many artisans have benefited from opportunitiesto fine-tune their craft products and transition intoentrepreneurs and exporters, thereafter. This waythe industry and buyers too have gained fromnew assortments and innovations involvingresources & skills from grassroots artisans fromfar flung craft pockets and villages in India.

An exclusive display area at this Autumn fairshowcases (resultant) innovations blendingtraditional craft material from Mana village inUttarakhand and skills of women artisans inBarmer, Rajasthan. Designers from EPCHconnected them strategically to reach thisobjective of blending the best of both worlds.

Mana is a village in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, located at an altitude of 3,200 meters. In fact,Mana is the last village before the Mana Pass andis 24 kilometres from the border of India. Theinhabitants trace their origin back to Mongol tribesand follow a migratory way of life. The residentsare the last generation of the Bhotia community.Craft forms practiced in and around Mana includecopper ware, lantana furniture, nettle fibre craft, ringaal bamboo basketry, cane weaving andnatural fiber crafts. Their handcrafted shawls andcarpets can find many takers owing to theirpotential for design aesthetics and commercialviability. Among raw materials, abundantlyavailable is wool with purity and texture uniqueto sheep living at this high altitude. The materialis sustainable, resilient, eco-friendly and is a

natural animal derivative that is sheared once ayear. People in Mana generally weave more than10 woollen items such as Gudma, Thulma, Pankhi,Pattu, sweater, cap, muffler, scarf, carpet, Ashanand Pakhi as well as a host of handicrafts.

With EPCH designers' guidance, this raw materialand crafting nuances of Mana artisans have beencombined with hand crafting skills of womenartisans in Barmer (Rajasthan) to bring out a rangeof products and also open up a world of productinnovation possibilities for both sides. IHGF DelhiFair-Autumn 2019 features a collectiveparticipation of 10 artisans and entrepreneurs atthis stall with a display of carpets, artisanalgarments and cushion covers. Location: ActivityArea, Near Hall No. 9.
