U G The Brief Introduction of IMBA & IBA Programs

Course DescriptionThiselectivewillprovidevisitingstudentswithexperienceinthediagnosisandmanagementofdiseaseentitiesprevalentinTaiwan.Throughaninterdisciplinaryapproach,theobjectiveofthiselectiveistoprovideanin-depthunderstandingofthepathophysiology,epidemiology,clinicalmanifestationsandtreatmentsofinfectiousdiseasesincludingdenguefever,tuberculosis,parasiticdiseases,andothertropical-associateddiseases;neoplasticdiseasesincludingbetelnut-relatedoral,nasophargeal,laryngealandesophagealcancersaswellashepatitisB-andC-associatedhepatocellularcancer.StudentswillobserveandlearnthepracticeofmedicineinTaiwan.

Course DescriptionThiscoursewillcriticallyexaminetherelationshipbetweenculturevariablesandhealth/healthcarepracticesandbehaviors.Studentswillexplorehowculturallifestyle,folkhealthcare,alternativetherapy,communityhealth,andthehighereducationandhealthcaresystemsinfluencethehealthinTaiwan’sandAmericansocietyandcommunities.

Course ObjectivesThiscourseisdesignedtoprovideexperientiallearningopportunitiestopreparestudentstounderstandandexaminetherelationshipbetweenculturalvariablesandhealthandhealthcarepractices,amongdiversecommunitiesinTaiwanandUSA.

Students will be able to:• Examineone’sownculture,healthbeliefsandvalues.• Discussandexperiencetheculturallifestyle,folkhealthcare,andalternativetherapypracticesinTaiwan.• Examinehealthandhealthcarepracticesfrommultipleperspectivesconsideringcultureinfluences.• Examinetheroleofcultureinhealthandhealth-relatedbeliefsandbehaviorsinTaiwan.• ComparethesimilarityanddifferenceofcommunityhealthcareandpreventionbetweenTaiwanandUSA.• Developculturesensitivity.


G Field Experience in International Occupational Health and Safety

• Thisintensivetwotothreeweekcourse,incollaborationwithKaohsiungMedicalUniversity’sGraduateInstituteofOccupationalSafetyandHealth(KMU-GIOSH)andtheNationalHealthResearchInstitute’sEnvironmentalHealthandOccupationalMedicine(NHRI-DEHOM),willfocusonthreemajorindustriesinTaiwan:iron/steelworks,shipbuilding,andpetrochemicals.Lectureswillcovertheseindustrialprocessesandtheirknownhealthandsafetyrisks.Studentswillbetakenonseveralsupervisedsitevisitstoeachindustry,andwillbeencouragedtoprocesstheirobservationsthroughinteractivediscussions.Thiscoursewillalsoprovideexposuretoculturalissuesaroundwork,workorganization,labor-managementrelations,andgovernmentalandacademicrolesrelevanttooccupationalsafetyandhealthinthesesettings.ThefacultywillincludeseveralHarvardSchoolofPublicHealthalumniandexpertsinsouthernTaiwan.

• Course Activities: Sitevisits;seminarpresentations(case–studyparticipatoryapproach).Sitevisitswillbesupervisedbythefaculty,alongwithexposureassessmentexpertsfromKMU.Writtenreportsofsitevisitswillbepreparedbystudents,withoralpresentationsanddiscussion.

Course DescriptionThisisajointcourseswiththeSchoolofPharmacy,UppsalaUniversity,Sweden.ThecoursewillintroducetheupdateprogressofTaiwanesePharmacy,includingpharmacyeducation,naturalproductsresearch,cosmetics,clinicalpharmacy,pharmaceuticalcompanies,govermentofficesandsoon.Ithasatourandneedtopayextrafeeforthecourse.ThestudentsfromSwedenwilljointogether.

Course DescriptionWiththepartnershipofUniversityofGeorgia(UGA),NationalCheng-KungUniversity(NCKU),andlocalcommunities,thiscoursewillintroducethepublichealthsystemofTaiwan,discusslessonslearnedfrompolicies,andresourcesrelatedtotheagingsociety,aswellasobservingsomehealthprogramsinaction.Sitevisitswillincludehospitals/clinics,long-termcarefacilities,seniorcenters,etc.Classeswillconsistoflectures,sitevisits,anddiscussions.GuestlecturerswillbedrawnfromthemajornationaluniversitiessuchasKMU,NCKU,UGA,aswellasfromcommunityexpertsandpractitionersinTaiwan.StudentswillhaveopportunitiestointeractwithfacultymembersandstudentsfromUGA,NCKU,andKMUthroughoutthiscourse.
