Wallingford Accessible Boat Club - ‘WOW-One’ has landed!!
Wallingford Accessible Boat Club celebrates delivery of Wallingford’s first ever Wheelyboat
The Wallingford Accessible Boat Club (WABC) took a giant step forward in the early Autumn last year when the Club took delivery of its long-awaited Wheelyboat. The champagne flowed as the boat was officially named ‘WOW-One’ by Mrs Cala Pike, one of the club’s Patrons. What a great event it truly was – witnessed by a small group of the club’s volunteer staff team as the weather gods applauded with torrential rain and lightning storms!
This momentous event represented the culmination of over three years hard work by a small group of determined volunteers who have worked tirelessly to achieve the club’s vision – to get disabled people in the Wallingford area out and about on our lovely river, just as able-bodied people do.
However, whilst we are making great progress, the launching of WOW-One is just the end of the beginning or the project, the end of Stage 1 – now we are cracking on with Stage 2, the completion of our mooring facilities. We have been extremely fortunate to have secured the all-important permission of Oxford University and Oxford University Boat Club (Thank You!) to use their Fleming Boat House site in central Wallingford as our HQ. It couldn’t be better - with space for parking, a storage cabin and a slip-way, perfect for wheelchair use. Now we are pro-gressing the required planning permission, no small task! We have a growing staff team – skippers, crewmen, bosuns and administrators – who will receive the appropriate training over the April/May period. This will give us the necessary time to complete our support processes and safety systems as well as our administration facilities – all important work which is vital to the safe operation of the Club. So still much to do for Stage 2 but we see light at the end of the tunnel. We have come a mighty long way in a relatively short period of time and our Team are now looking forward to the launch of the Wheelyboat service in the June timeframe. Fingers crossed! More details on that and how to make bookings etc to come in a couple of months - look out for it!
Should you wish to find out more about the Wheelyboat, please

THE SAFE PLACE SCHEME
Safe Places is a national scheme that is rolling out across the county of Oxfordshire. It is
a scheme that offers extra reassurance to vulnerable people who may be feeling lost,
worried or threatened while out and about in the community. The project is aimed at
helping vulnerable groups of people such as those with dementia, people with learning
disabilities or mental health needs.
Local shops and businesses that sign up to the scheme are provided with a distinctive
logo to display in their premises so that the vulnerable person can easily identify them.
Each business is checked out beforehand by either Thames Valley Police or the Fire and
Rescue Service to ensure that they meet the Safe Place criteria and volunteers will
periodically check the venues.
Those who might benefit from the scheme carry a card which provides a named contact
person of their choice. If someone shows the card in a Safe Place, the business or shop
will contact the helper named on the card and keep the vulnerable person safe until their
supporter arrives. Even if people do not have a card they can still ask for assistance.
The scheme is a straightforward one and is now up and running in the South and Vale and
West Oxfordshire. A list of places that are signed up to the scheme can be found on each
District Council’s website as well as where the ‘I need help’ cards can be obtained. There
is also an Oxfordshire Safe Places Facebook page that maps out where the safe places
are located as well as any that have signed up in other areas of Oxfordshire. https://
www.facebook.com/SafePlacesOxfordshire/
The scheme does have some locations signed up in other areas of Oxfordshire but would
benefit from having someone who is committed to taking the scheme forward. If anyone is
interested or has a business that would like to become a designated safe place – please
get in contact either via email [email protected] or call 07821 987080.

Earn your Duke of Edinburgh with
VICTA (for those aged 14-25 years
with a visual impairment)
VICTA have worked with the team at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in both 2018 and 2019 to
develop and deliver both a Bronze and Silver DofE Award programme for young people who
are visually impaired.
Founded by The Duke of Edinburgh in 1956, The Award has built an admirable reputation not
just for developing life skills but among colleges, universities and employers who recognise it
as a mark of excellence on personal statements, CVs and job applications. It is awarded as
recognition of a young person’s successful journey of self-discovery and development. Its
balanced programme develops the whole person – mind, body and soul, in an environment of
social interaction, problem solving and team working.
Given the achievements of the programme, we now host regular expeditions for the Bronze
Award. We are always looking for groups of blind or partially sighted young people aged 14 to
25. We also deliver a Silver Award programme, for those students who have completed their
Bronze award. This is suited to students aged 15 to 25.
If you are interested and want to find out more about joining either of VICTAs Bronze or Silver
Award Programmes, please go to https://www.victa.org.uk/our-services/earn-award/dofe/
You can also apply directly there for either Programme.

Autism Awareness Training
Autism Live Training has taken over Autism Oxford's Training and Seminars. They have some
upcoming training session dates with subject choices suitable for professionals, family
members or carers.
Richard Maguire, formerly Senior Trainer and Consultant at Autism Oxford, has designed these
half day training sessions in order to share his professional insight on how to effectively work
with autistic individuals.
Providing support for families and carers - These seminars are ideal for family members or
carers who wish to gain deeper insights into how their autistic child, young person or adult
perceives the world and might be feeling. You'll understand the reasons for their behaviour
and how best to communicate with them. Get answers in a friendly group setting with like-
minded people. Hear how our proven tactics are designed to help avoid misunderstandings
and meltdowns. Learn valuable techniques created to move forward with improved
understanding.
Improving practice for professionals - Do you work with children, young adults and older peo-
ple who are on the Autistic Spectrum? We designed this half-day seminar for neuro-typical
people to share our professional insight on how to work effectively with autistic individuals. If
you wish to better support your clients in day to day activities, this seminar is for you.
Attendees will have the chance to ask questions and hopefully be empowered to deliver im-
proved and longer lasting outcomes.
BOOK NOW - £54.49 per person
Refreshments included; please bring your own lunch
There are various dates available and the training locations are in Aylesbury, Bucks or

Emergency First Aid at Work Level 3
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require all employers to make arrangements to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. This includes carrying out a risk assessment, appointing a suitable amount of first aiders and providing appropriate first aid training.
The QA Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF) is a regulated and nationally recognised qualification designed for those who have a specific responsibility at work, to provide first aid in a range of emergency first aid situations. It is also ideal for people who have a specific responsibility to provide basic first aid in voluntary and community activities.
Thursday 12th March 2020 (6 hours). Refreshments & networking from 9.45am with a 10.00am start; finish by 5.00pm. £95 – £125.
An Introduction to Volunteering & the Law
This informative and engaging workshop will highlight the key areas to be aware of, and tips to make sure you are adhering to your responsibilities in protecting volunteer’s rights. This course is a basic introduction to volunteering and the law. The session will help you to clarify the legal position in relation to volunteers. How do you ensure that you are supporting and developing volunteers while avoiding the risk of creating contracts and falling foul of employment law?
OCVA’s Volunteer Co-ordinator will use practical exercises, real life examples and current advice to guide you through the process of acquiring volunteers and developing volunteer agreements. There will be useful tips provided on developing an agreement that reflects the role and the volunteer’s responsibilities, without creating a contract. You will also have an opportunity to enhance your knowledge of best practice in managing volunteers to achieve these guidelines.
This is a pro-active workshop, designed to break down the complexities of these regulations and leave you feeling reassured in your responsibilities and management of volunteers.
Tuesday 17th March 2020 (3 hours). Refreshments & networking from 10.00am with a 10.15am start; finish by 1.15pm. £40 – £70.

Reframing Conflicts
Conflict is an inevitable part of everyday life. It is often also experienced as negative, worrying, exhausting, painful, destructive and – at worst – dangerous. It can be particularly stressful in small organisations that rely on cooperation and commonality of view. However, it can also have positive effects.
This workshop will focus on how conflict arises, what mechanisms are involved and how it might give rise to creative possibilities for change. Participants will practise using some basic tools and techniques to help achieve this in their work with clients and colleagues.
Wednesday 18th March 2020 (3 hours). Refreshments & networking from 9.45am with a 10.00am start; finish by 1.00pm. £40 – £70. Intermediate Social Media Masterclass
Social media is now the biggest source of internet traffic worldwide – it has already transformed the way society communicates, and how charities of all sizes raise their profiles, inspire supporters and reach the communities they serve. Join us for a fun and fast paced workshop on how your organisation can thrive and drive impact online. This is your chance to get hands on with your channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram confirmed so far), share tactics, and have your questions answered by a digital communications expert.
This workshop is designed for those who already have experience running at least one social media channel and are looking to learn more about them.
Comments from previous attendees: ‘Trainer very knowledgeable’ ‘lots of content covered’ ‘excellent interactive course’
