100 YEAR 4-H CELEBRATION T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST
Would you like to see your original design being worn by over 200 smiling 4-H exhibitors on Thursday of the 2018 Door County Fair? The Door County 4-H program is looking for their 2018 4-H T-shirt design to celebrate 100 years of 4-H in Door County. The contest is open to 4-H members in two divisions: Grades K-7 and Grades 8-13. The design should:
Include the 4-H clover.
Relate to the 100 year celebration theme.
Be your original art work (no photos).
Be able to be reproduced on a T-shirt -- please make design in black & white only. Design will be printed in white on a green T-shirt. Both 1st place designs will be on the front and back of the T-shirt.
Be 8½x11 inches.
Include your name, age, phone number, and e-mail on the back of your design. Please note that your design will become the property of the 4-H Adult Leaders Board and will be subject to editing and change at their discretion in order to make it fit on the T-shirt. Please submit your design by April 6th. Mail to the UW-Extension Office, 421 Nebraska Street, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 or send by e-mail to [email protected]. Presenting or speaking before a group or audience is an important life skill to develop. The goal of the Door County 4-H Communications Contest is to give youth an opportunity to learn and practice communications skills in a positive and encouraging environment. Participants will be evaluated on their presentation and will receive feedback from a judge. New this year – entries will be awarded ribbons and premiums for the Door County Fair!
There are 4 divisions for the Communication Contest:

Grade Levels & Time Limits:
Cloverbuds (K-2nd Grade): 1-3 minutes
Beginner (3rd – 5th Grade): 2-4 minutes
Intermediate (6th-8th Grade): 3-5 minutes
Senior (9th Grade & Up): 4-7 minutes
Categories:
Prose/Poetry: reading of prose or poetry, a memorized piece, or storytelling. You may edit your selection to fit the time limit. Original poetry or stories may be used.
Traditional Speech: Pick a topic of your choice and write an original, factual speech about it. It could be about a 4-H project you like, a historical topic, favorite animal, issue you’re concerned about or more. Your speech can inform, persuade or motivate the audience. You may use visuals to help you deliver your speech, but no props (this is not a demonstration).
If Speaking is done as a team, the time limit can
be doubled.

SCHOLARSHIP The 4-H Horse & Pony Committee awards a scholarship through an application process for those attending post-secondary education – applications are now available and are due by March 1st to the UW-Extension Office. We will be working on horsemanship skills and it will be geared for getting ready for drill team but you do not need to be a drill team member to come and ride. HORSEMANSHIP CLINIC – APRIL 28TH Wendy Woldt is offering a Horsemanship Clinic on Saturday, April 28. Registration will be at 8:30 and the clinic runs from 9 am to 4 pm at Idlewild Farms. The Communications Contest is revised this year, with new categories (individual and team) for poetry and prose readings, demonstrations and even some non-verbal communications categories like poster, brochure and creative writing! New this year – all entries will receive fair premiums and ribbons! See the flyer in this newsletter for more information! SEWING WORKSHOPS – MARCH 3 or 10 Workshops are scheduled in March for members to learn sewing skills. The first set of workshops will focus on making a simple apron! Dates are Saturday, March 3 or Saturday, March 10 (you only need to attend one of the workshops), 10 am at Barn Door Quilts in Sturgeon bay. Pre-registration is required and space is limited! If you would like to sign up for one of the workshops, please contact the Extension Office (920-746-2260). 4-H ART BEAT – MARCH 16-17 4-H Art Beat! was created for 4-H members in grades 3-5 and their parents and leaders! Art Beat! will be held March 16 and 17 at our State 4-H Camp, Upham Woods in the Wisconsin Dells. The weekend will feature a look at a variety of arts projects including music, drama, visual arts, and more! Youth and adult participants will rotate through a variety of sessions which are hands-on and active and held at various sites throughout camp. Both youth and adult participants stay in the warm and cozy heated cabins! Camp begins Friday evening at 7 pm and ends Saturday afternoon at 3 pm. The $50/person fee (youth & adults) will include all materials and supplies (including a very cool ArtBeat! backpack!), special snacks, overnight lodging and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. WISCONSIN 4-H FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS 4-H members who are high school seniors or in their first year of post-secondary education are eligible to apply for scholarships from the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation! Wisconsin 4-H Foundation Scholarship applications are due March 15th! GREENSTONE FARM CREDIT SCHOLARSHIPS GreenStone Farm Credit Services is now accepting applications through March 2nd for its 2018 scholarship program, and will award up to $40,000 to incoming college freshmen pursuing a degree in an agriculture-related field. Students attending a four-year college program can earn a $2,000 scholarship, while $1,000 awards will go to selected students attending a two-year college program. Qualifications include: Must be a full-time high school senior graduating
in year of application Must reside within GreenStone's territory, which
includes Michigan and select counties in northeastern Wisconsin
Have at least a 3.0 grade point average Plan to study an agriculture-related field In addition, applicants should demonstrate participation and leadership in school, community and agricultural activities.
