A. Society

A.I. Society Report We are happy to report about the last year which has brought big strides and changes in the existence of our Society. It is with great satisfaction that we look back to this year which should be brought to your memory in brief. We held 8 EC meetings, 1 annual general body meeting, 1 extraordinary general body meeting and 11 working committee meetings besides informal meetings with the staff and children. A huge amount of work was done in these meetings and the subsequently following action. We could again welcome 12 new members, but also losing 4 members due to personal reasons, thus increasing the number of members to 27. It is the highest number of members we ever. In spite of this increase in the membership we could not achieve a more active participation in the EC meetings which are open to ALL Society members – different from the usually followed routine in other Societies –, and we have till now failed in getting more time from each member. Nevertheless we have not abandoned the hope of achieving this goal this year. A.I.1. New Members Mr. Dominic Vijay Mr. Devadas Mundhra Mr. M.H. Hidayathulla Ms. Ruchi Gupta Mr. Arnold Mathias Ms. Flevy Crasto Ms. Catherine Selvarani Ms. Sangeetha Saksena Ms. Pramila B. Priyadarshini Mrs. Kanta Mundhra Mr. Swami E. Mr. Basu R. A.I.2. EC members of Last Year Mr. Ramachandra Seshagiri President Ms. Indira Swaminathan Vice-President Ms. Vibha Singh Secretary Mr. Sunil Ganapathy Joint Secretary Mr. J. Baskaran Treasurer Mr. Sebastian Devaraj EC member without portfolio Ms. Hella Mundhra EC member without portfolio

A.II. Important Achievements of the Society in 2006 to 07 A.II.1. Amendment to the Constitution to suit the Societies' Registration Act.

The concept of nominated Trustees was conflicting with the Act and had to be changed into an elected committee. A.II.2. Approval of the budget 2006 to 07 The budget was officially approved by the EC and the Trustees and was sent to the German Society for approval. A.II.3. Purchase of a 1 ½ acres big land at Devanahalli near the upcoming international airport. The land was purchased as investment into a quickly developing area with extremely good prospects. The investment was 23,5 lakhs which we had saved over the years. Supporting 19 members of the staff and past students to purchase a site of about 30' by 40' at Devanahalli by loaning to them an amount of Rs. 4 lakhs. A.II.4. Training women to become masons Mr. Werner Dahlmanns, a member of the German Society, who is coming to us twice a year for 6 weeks, is continuing to train women to become masons through house constructions. He is bearing all expenses for his service, travel and living himself and collects the funds for his training project completely on his own. Apart from the main training he teaches them basic English, simple mathematics and cycling which is a tremendous effort considering their absolute illiteracy. Mr. Dahlmanns also constructed a very economical oven for two families. His request is to engage a person who will supervise the use of such 'new' methods and teach the families proper life skills. A.II.5. Publishing the autobiography of Hella Mundhra Since there was a strong request from the staff and children it was decided that Hella should write her biography for the Silver Jubilee Celebrations in January 2008. A.II.6. Starting a Higher Education Fund The idea of collecting funds from past students for the benefit of future students to go for higher education was formed and put into practice by opening a bank account for this purpose. A.II.7. Award to Hella Mundhra The Rotary Club of Bangalore East honoured Mrs. Hella Mundhra by their yearly award for her outstanding contribution towards international peace and understanding. Her work as a whole as well as the induction of international volunteers was rewarded in this way.

B. Home

B.I. Children Shishu Home as we affectionately call ourselves continues to reach out to unfortunate children of our surroundings. Often they come from abusive homes where their mothers are mistreated by drunken husbands or abandoned. Whoever has come to us for residence, it is after facing various expressions of poverty which manifest themselves in different forms. And especially it is the women and children who bear the brunt of it and who are regarded as the weakest section of the society. In utter desperation they search a place where they can leave their children in a safe condition and that is how they find their way to us. We do not only shelter these children, we also nurture and give them a new start in life. In Shishu Mandir, they experience real home life, have access to a good education and the hope of a promising future. With the affection, understanding and guidance given by our care-takers, they overcome their past traumatic experiences. At this moment we have 28 children at Shishu Mandir Home – 2 babies, 19 school going children, 5 college students and 2 apprentices. Our past student Geetha and now staff member is continuing to live at Shishu Mandir, since she is under dialysis constantly. B.I.1. New children Manjula N ., who is 16 years old, was invited to live in Shishu Home, as she was facing heavy problems in her family. Her father had taken another wife and did not look after Manjula's family anymore. She has two sisters and one brother who live with their mother. Manjula, who was a 9th std. student in our School, showed great potential in her studies as well as in leading and influencing children. On this background she was offered to get better chances for her life career by living in Shishu Home. So far she has proved the expectations to be correct. Dilip K., an 11 year old boy, was also invited from our school to live in Shishu Mandir. His father, a chronic alcoholic, used to regularly send Dilip to the liquor store to buy liquor for him. As he was exceptionally bright and intelligent it was felt that he should be given all possibilities for his education and future, so he joint Shishu Home. Another girl named Vishalakshi, 8 years old, came to Shishu Home from our school on the 31st of July 2006. Her mother had committed suicide by setting herself on fire. She has two younger siblings who live with her father. Vishalakshi is a smart, well behaved girl, who has adjusted very well to the Home. Kavya, a 4-year-old girl, came to live in Shishu Home on the 7th of August 2006. Her arrival at Shishu is the result of gender discrimination in our society. Her mother was the second wife of her husband, as he did not get a boy in his first marriage. When she also gave birth to two girls only, she was ill-treated to the extent that she decided to escape with her two children. Kavya 's younger sister lives with her mother. Ruth S. is a 5-year-old girl who came to us on the 3rd of January 2007. She had lived with her mother, siblings and extended family members numbering 15 in one small room. The pathetic situation of Ruth’s family throws light on the indescribably harsh realities of poverty-stricken families. Ruth’s father had abandoned the family two years ago leaving her mother with her three children in addition to her three orphaned cousins to fend for themselves. Ruth and Kavya have started schooling.

Payal is a little child of 3 years. She is basically from Pune, but her father ill-treated her mother so that both fled to Bangalore where her mother found employment as a housemaid in a businessman's house. Since she had to work, she could not keep her daughter with her. She is an orphan herself and has nowhere to go. With the help of her employer she found her way to us. B.I.2. Special Needs Children Indirani , now 18 years old, has finished her one year Diploma Course in baking in the Spastic Society of Karnataka. We are now looking out for a job for her. Navya, now 8 years old, is also a special needs child who was admitted to Sri Sai Foundation, a special school for mentally challenged children. The school authorities, however, asked us to move her to another school, as Navya became unmanageable for them. She has now been admitted to Arpana School, a special needs school. She is very happy to go to her new school and the school has not indicated any disappointment yet. B.I.3. Adoptions Out of the babies of last year and this year 7 went for in-country adoption, 3 were claimed back by their biological parents and 5 are awaiting adoption, namely Vaishnavi, Shithal, Stella, Dipti and Ambika. Stella, an 8-year-old girl, was found all alone near our school, as she had run away from the orphanage where she was staying. She too has ghastly experiences of alcoholism and even murder – she is supposed to have witnessed her father killing her mother – that have left deep scars in her mind. With the positive environment at our home she is slowly developing and transforming. Dipti , now 5 years old, with a pathetic history of child labour and abuse behind her, has a noticeable delay in her speech development which requires intense speech therapy. She was temporarily treated for this at the Spastic Society, but with very little improvement. She also had to be operated for tonsillary enlargement. She is now going to our school. Because of her traumatic past and her delays in her speech development she is going for inter-country adoption. We found a suitable family in the U.S.A., who is eagerly waiting for her. Ambika , a 5-year-old girl, was found near the railway station and picked up by the police. They kept her in the Remand Home where she stayed for two months. During this time she was found to have a big defect in her heart which requires surgical repair. On admission with us it was noted that she did not speak any language clearly and also did not respond to soft talk in any language. She showed severe psychological blocking and only gradually is coming out of it. She was found to have a big septum defect which needs heart surgery. The process to place her in adoption is going on. Vaishnavi is a baby who was brought to us from the Remand Home in a very serious condition . She required hospitalization on the spot. Her mother had left her …, as she was mentally imbalanced and still undergoes psychiatric treatment. The Child Welfare Committee, knowing the pathetic history of the child, insists on us to keep the child for an unlimited time, until the mother may be in a position to take the child back.

Shithal was born under our care in a government hospital and handed over to us in a written abandonment declaration. Her mother was living in the street with two sons and no means whatsoever to bring up another baby. The child has meanwhile been placed in pre-adoptive foster care. B.I.4. Regular Activities and Programmes The small children regularly go to the park, the bigger children study, do their homework and participate in the daily chores like washing, cleaning, cooking and night duties on weekends. Yet amidst all these activities the children still find time to play and have fun. Also regular meetings take place between the staff and the children to sort out their differences and problems, of late even in the presence of Mama via internet. Outings, indoor celebration and other entertainments are part of Shishu Mandir activities. All the children were taken by our volunteers to Cubbon Park for picnics. There is also a children’s area with swings, seesaws and jungle gyms where the children have a great deal of fun and exercise. Occasionally the volunteers also took the big girls window shopping on MG Road and Brigade Road.

B.I.5. Festivities Christmas was celebrated as usual with the exchanging of gifts which were thoughtfully chosen. Devadas Anna and Rogeria Akka, Mama’s son and daughter-in-law joined us in the celebration. Also present were Mr. Anand and his wife Mrs. Vimala and many of our old children who helped to make the gathering merry and festive. Details regarding Christmas gift expenditure Ann 1: Christmas gifts from Home 2006 Deepavali was celebrated in the tradition way by lighting lamps, making colourful rangolis and bursting crackers. The children were treated to all the special sweets of the season by various sponsors. Mr. Shankar Das Mundhra and Mrs. Kanta Mundhra performed the pooja.

B.I.6. Educational Activities at Shishu Home

Page 10: Shishu Mandirshishumandir.org/images/2006_07.pdfAnnual Report 2006-2007 Shishu Mandir 17/11, Cambridge Road, Ulsoor, Bangalore-560008

On two Saturdays Ingrid organized public speaking sessions where the children had to compose stories or poems and speak in their own words or keep a diary for the whole week. These compositions were read out for all. On two weekends in the month quizzes were organized for the children which proved very enriching. Then also the children took to learning non-Indian food specialities like making pizzas, or samosas with different chutneys. The children loved evenings such as these and there proved to be a lot of fun for everyone. B.I.7. Higher Educational Qualifications

1. Vijayalakshmi completed her Master in Computer Application (MCA) and only her viva remains which will be finished in the beginning of August. From September she will be working in a computer firm at Chennai, as she has chosen her life partner at Chennai.

2. Pratik completed his B.Com. and is awaiting his results. He had plans of enrolling himself

in a premier college of the country, since he understood that the college name counts a lot with the employers. To his bad luck he did not apply his mind and heart sufficiently and did not get into any outstanding college at affordable fees. But he managed to clear his CA entrance exam and has even been offered to be trained under our auditors' firm, Braganza and Braganza. It is a unique opportunity, which he still has not yet decided upon.

3. Malathi cleared her Master in Tourism and Administration (MTA) last year and has started

working. She joint a travel agent's firm and is self-dependent. She supports her mother and also has started paying into the Higher Education Fund of Shishu Mandir.

4. Reshma is finishing her 2nd year in Nurses' training at St. Philomena's Hospital.

Throughout her exams she stood third in her course. She is very eager to come to the Home, whenever the management allows it even for a few hours, as the atmosphere in the students' hostel is extremely strict and authoritative.

5. Karthik is just finishing his 3rd year of his BE Degree and has one year more to go. During

a campus selection in his 6th semester he was selected by L & T. Out of 130 candidates only 2 were chosen. He has a desire to go for an additional MBA course, as he feels that he has more managerial than technical capacity and has vast possibilities if he can show both qualifications.

6. Divya secured a 2nd class pass in her PUC. She is now enrolled in a BBM degree course

according to her desire.

7. Piyush got a 3rd class pass in his PUC, as he had interrupted his course for a long time. He had a phase of emotional instability which led him astray. In order to give him time for an inner development he has been asked to work for a year, experience life outside continue his studies of B. Com. after that period. It is also imposed that he saves about Rs. 10,000 for his studies next year.

8. Guruammal passed her SSLC with a 2nd class. She had shown symptoms of psychological

disturbance in the past that we consider her SSLC qualification as a great achievement on her side. She has a special aptitude in tailoring and will start a 3 years Diploma Course in Fashion Design.

7

B.I.8. Savings The saving scheme of the parents in the name of their children picked up gradually only, since the parents had become used to the fact that Shishu Mandir provided everything for their children. But after one year it also came into practice, though not with all parents. The parents save an amount between Rs. …. and 250 per month for their children, and also the children save part of their pocket money from Shishu Mandir for later use. Details regarding Savings see Annexure 2: Savings Home Children

B.I.9. Unforeseen Events One of our little girls from Shishu Home, Jennifer who is 6 years old, was taken back by her mother, although she cannot provide the very basic needs to the child. Beena, our 18 year old child who had been with us for 10 years, left Shishu to get married against all advice and counselling. Last year, just before Divali she showed signs of emotional imbalance and in a moment of anger she took an overdose of Paracetemol tablets. Lengthy counselling followed and she fully understood and accepted her overreaction as uncalled for. In January she started an affair with a boy from the street and decided to live with him in marriage within a few weeks. No amount of counselling even to the extent of bringing her relatives from her village could make her change her mind, and she left us to stay with a boy of 24 years without any education, vocation, job or social behaviour. He had been known to be a drunkard and he proved it in the meantime. Karthiyani , a 14-year-old girl, was sent back to her aunt's family. Her behaviour and disinterest in her studies – she was about to repeat the class for the third time – as well as her strong tendency to get involved with boys forced us to place her to the responsibility of her relatives. Karthiyaini is still getting all financial support from Shishu Mandir and is continuing her studies in another school. The residential quarters which we had leased at Devasandra for the benefit of our senior students we gave up after the lease period came to an end. It proved to an unsuccessful venture, as the students failed to utilize their freedom prudently and also did not achieve a harmonious atmosphere between them. We will, however, venture such residential quarters again when the number of students justifies such an investment. Annexure 3: All Home Children during 2006 to 2007 B.I.10. Staff Ms. Uma, who had joint us as the Administrative Coordinator in March 2000, found her life partner and an adoptive daughter at the age of 38 years. Since her husband was in the Air Force and bound to the northern region for some more time, she discontinued her job in favour of a happy family life. Her place was taken over by Mr. Anand, who has been promoted to the designation of Director. There is a noticeable change to the better in all respects after this change. Our Social Worker Mrs. Jijy Abraham went on an 11-months maternity leave, as she was expecting twins. She was replaced by Ms. Sunitha. Mrs. Jijy Abraham has meanwhile taken up her job again, and Ms. Sunitha has left us for a better paid employment. Since our projects are constantly on the increase it was necessary to have an additional social worker. We employed Ms. Jisha who is mainly looking after adoptions and government related works.

Table 2: Staff of Shishu Mandir Home with service period

Another change in the staff came in March when Mr. Irudiyaswami retired at the age of 81 years after 16 years of dedicated service with us. He has gone through all heights and lows with us and will not be forgotten. For 15 months we had a big number of babies for whom we had to employ extra staff on a temporary basis. It was Clara who helped us out in this situation. She did night duty continuously and was very sad to leave us. B.II. Outside Activities B.II.1. Holiday Camp In the month of September the home children went to Hakki Bikki Colony which is about 10 km from Bannerghatta Park. The children took part in many outdoor activities and interacted with the tribal children. During this outing the school children performed a street play on AIDS. They also visited the national park and a lake with a waterfall where they had a lot of fun in the water. B.II.2. Visits to Hippocampus Once a week the children went to the Hippocampus Library with the volunteers. They have access to books, computers and children’s films. Hippocampus is a library which is developing schemes and methods to develop reading skills and interest in the children. B.II.3. Christmas Bazaar For months before Christmas, the staff and older children worked towards preparing for the Christmas Bazaar. Rose cookies, murukus, chocolate and carrot cakes found a good sale long before the bazaar ended. A lot of hard work and organization went into the bazaar to make it a success. B.IV. Voluntary Service B.IV.1. Volunteers from Germany In the last year we had 6 volunteers from Germany namely Julia, Sophia, Yasmina, Mareike, Tina and Verena, who involved themselves wholeheartedly in the activities of Shishu Mandir. They spent a period of 4 to 9 months with us and during this time contributed greatly to the happiness and enrichment of the children. They took care of the babies and toddlers and helped the other children with their evening studies. They also organized activities like drawing, painting, outings, music and dancing. B.IV.2. Other Volunteers Mrs. Ruchi Gupta, an employee of Flextronics, devoted every Sunday morning to the tuition of our 10th std. and college students who required this support badly. Another voluntary service was rendered by Mrs. Sushila on a daily basis. She taught the children Kannada.

B.V. Food and Health Sponsorships Various well-wishers donated rice, food grains, lentils, sugar etc. to our Home. A number of families sponsored cakes, snacks, fruit, ice cream and chocolates to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays etc. An organization called ‘Agastya Universal Trust’ regularly donated one meal a week for the children of Shishu Home. Some well-wishers also make cash donations. Geetha who has been a Shishu Home child since she was 4 years old and presently works as an accountant in our school continues to be fully sponsored for her dialysis expenses three times a week.

B.VI. Society Membership Swami, a past student of the Home, who has finished 6 years of working after his schooling, always showed a special inclination towards rendering his services to the Shishu Mandir. He was very happy when he was invited to become a Society member.

B.VII. Special Investments in the Home Solar Water Heater Since renewable forms of energy have to be used primarily it was decided that we should also install a solar water heater in the Home. It was done at an expense of Rs. 75,000. B.VII.1. Water Proofing Both buildings of the Home had severe leaking problems which even led to extensive fungus growth in one building. The terraces were therefore repaired with a water proofing agent, which, however, resulted in an increase of heat underneath the tar roofing. The expenses came to Rs. 36,000. B.VII.2. UPS The working on the computers got heavily disturbed by the frequent power cuts and failures. It was therefore needed to invest in a battery system to provide the basis for an uninterrupted working time. Two batteries with a provision of 2 hours of power supply were bought at an expense of Rs. 32,183.

This playground is also being used by the youth of Bhattrahalli. Due to the continuous efforts put in by Mr. Venu, Mr. Nagaraj and the people of Hella Nagar, we could get the quarry land allotted as play ground which is being levelled with the financial support of Shishu Mandir. These 6 acres of land would soon be converted as playground and park to be utilized by the residents of Hella Nagar. C.X.2. (ii) House Constructions

The houses for Shilpa A.P., Suman I., Anand Babu I. and Madhan, which were in the finishing stage, were completed and inaugurated. The house of Ramesh B. was constructed by Mr. Werner with the help of four women who receive a training in the field of masonry. As asbestos sheet poses a serious health hazard, Mr. Werner made the roof of wood and tiles. Additionally he introduced eco-friendly walls with no plastering on the inside walls, space for ventilation between the rooms and a few glass tiles on the roof to have light from the top. Further he built a special economical oven, which requires one third of the usual amount of wood only, and a rain harvesting module. It is observed that the villagers are not very happy about all the innovations imposed on them. They are used to asbestos sheets and cannot understand the harmfulness of the material. It is therefore necessary to counsel and convince them in a long process which would require the interaction of a social worker on a regular basis. The house construction of Pravalika P. of class 3 has been started. We chose to get an undertaking from the family that they would use tiles for roofing instead of asbestos sheets. For the coming year houses for Sandhya M., Kala E., Shiva S. and Harish N. are planned. For details see Annexure 7 (iii) Savings through School The postal saving scheme, which was introduced in the school in 2001 to help the children for their higher education, is successfully carried out with the help of the class teachers. A total of Rs. 4,20,500.00 has been accumulated till now. In addition a sum of Rs. 1,96,500 has been saved and kept in fixed deposits which was donated by different sponsors as additional gifts. For details see Annexure 8a It is mandatory for all the past students of the school to continue the savings as long as they are supported for their education. With the exception of two children all the children are prompt in paying their savings amount. A sum of Rs. 49,400.00 has so far been deposited in the post office as savings. Even some of our children’s siblings opened accounts through our school. The money is also deposited in the Postal Bank under the recurring deposit scheme. So far a sum of Rs.63,000 has been deposited as savings for the family members. For details see Annexure 8b and c (iv) Christmas Gifts This year Christmas gifts of a value between Rs. 80 and Rs. 425 totalling Rs. 82,700.00 for 352 beneficiaries were distributed.
