Dattatreya is the Grand Teacher or "Guru principle" inthe universe. The teachers in various planes are themanifestation of the one teaching principle who is

referred to in the ancient Indian wisdom as Dattatreya.Anasuya in Sanskrit means: "not Asuya". Asuya meansmalice. Dattatreya is said to be born to Anasuya, theMother and Athri, the Father. Athri, the Father, is said

to be the pure consciousness and Anasuya, the Mother,is said to be the state of no malice (jealousy). The stateof Anasuya is depicted as an equilateral triangle andthe state of Athri is depicted as a centre within thecircumference. As pure consciousness he can be like

the Divine Mother and as Pure Existence he can be theGod Absolute.

According to these beliefs,

Dattatreya is an avatar of Vishnu born to RishiAtri and Anasuya. Though an avatar of Vishnu healso possesses the attributes of Brahma andShiva who also were incarnated in the Atri familyas Soma and Durvasa respectively along with

Dattatreya but who left their parents chargingDatta - treya with their attributes. HenceDattatreya is also known as Trimurti.

Rather than a deity, Dattatreya is regardedmore a person, a celibate avadhuta , a wandering

Guru and a king among yogis (Yogiraj ), whotravels on earth showering his grace on worthydevotees.
