Lincoln Electric Company founded in 1895 today is the world leader in design, development and manufacturing of arc welding products, robotic welding systems, and plasma cutting equipment. Lincoln Electric’s commitment to provide the most innovative, cost-effective, quality welding and cutting solutions is one that has guided our company for more than 100 years, what, coupled with our technological leadership and worldwide presence enables us to provide competent and reliable solutions for our Customers. Lincoln Electric offers solutions created especially for shipbuilding. The vast majority of welded joints in Shipbuilding is related to producing stiffened panels, and welding them together. In the production of a panel, the plates are predominantly submerged arc welded (tendency for one-side welding); the stiffeners can be welded with solid or cored wires, high recovery stick electrodes or submerged arc. Once the panels have been produced, welding is in all positions. Because of their high deposition rate and ease of welding, rutile flux cored wires are

the preferred welding consumables for such applications. The hull structure of ships generally consists of carbon-manganese steel with a thickness of 8 – 50 mm. Chemical tankers have (duplex) stainless steel cargo tanks, for special applications other high alloyed or non-ferrous materials are applied. Our experience and knowledge has enabled us to develop a wide range of welding consumables (for all relevant welding processes) and the corresponding welding equipment. Our philosophy is that we supply products that enable our customers to efficiently build a ship. Our equipment is rugged and reliable, transportable and allows for increased distances between the equipment and the actual place of welding (remote controls, special light weight wire feeders that can operate at a large distance from the power source). Lincoln equipment is designed to meet EN60974-1 and CE standards for safety and reliability. Our welding consumables are designed to be welder friendly, as in our experience this improves quality, productivity, and reduces repairs.

MATERIALSIron hulls replaced wooden hulls in the second half of the 18th century, to be followed up by steel. Steel grades in regular seagoing ships and inland barges are designed with regular and HT ship steel grades ranging from grade A up to grade EH 40 according ASTM A 131/A 131M, “Standard Specification for Structural Steel for Ships”.

Welding activities determine a substantial part of the costs and production time. This provides a continuous drive towards the most efficient processes with high quality welding consumables. The most currently applied welding processes are SMAW, FCAW and SAW. The selection as shown in this brochure is the most successful set of products used in many shipyards.

Special ships incorporate more complex components or even a completely different internal construction such as this is the case with chemical carriers, using UNS S31653 (AISI 316LN) or S32205 (duplex stainless steel). Further the use of the aluminium alloy AlMg4,5Mn (5083) for the complete or partial ship structure has to be mentioned.

Major Classification Societies as Det Norske Veritas, Bureau Veritas, Lloyds Register, Germanischer Lloyd and the American Bureau of Shipping, led to grading of mild steels of between 0.16% to 0.23% Carbon content. Grades A, CS, DS, B, D, and E are progressively tougher mild steels. High strength steels have three grades, AH, DH and EH. Each of these high tensile grades is available in three levels of strength, 32, 36 and 40, the latter being the strongest. Toughness and strength are determined at the steel mill by means of process control and the addition on traces of aluminium, niobium and/or vanadium.Weldability is of preliminary importance; shipyards require:  “no preheat and no complex procedures”.

This result in a restriction on steel types, high carbon steels can’t be used to enhance strength because HAZ cracking must be avoided.

High tensile welding consumables are to be used for high tensile steel, f.e. in submarines. Carbon equivalent (CE) is used to indicate permissible levels of alloying elements and carbon in steel for specific welding conditions.

Page 11: SHIPBUILDING - Lincoln Electric · 2015-09-15 · Lincoln Electric Company founded in 1895 today is the world leader in design, development and manufacturing of arc welding products,

Chemical tankers are a composition in duplex stainless steel. Duplex stainless steel is finding an increasing uptake in the shipbuilding sector, mainly due to its higher strength and corrosion resistance properties.

The cargo tanks are constructed from duplex stainless steel UNS S32205 (Mat. Nr. 1.4462) which is a higher grade of stainless steel as opposed to austenitic AISI 316LN grade (UNS S31653) that is often used for inland navigation tankers.

Duplex stainless steel has a higher strength combined with a favorable corrosion resistance (excellent stress and pitting corrosion), two properties that have governed the choice of this material as a way of increasing the number of chemical products that can be loaded and transported by these chemical tankers.

The corrosion resistance can be calculated and expressed by the Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE), adjusted for nitrogen containing stainless steel:

Duplex stainless steel UNS S32205 (Mat. Nr. 1.4462) also has excellent weldability. Depending on the required welding positions during construction, as well as the various base material combinations, the selection of welding processes and welding consumables have been made and tested in accordance with the rules of the shipbuilding Classification Societies.

NOZZLESNOZZLESNozzles are available as fixed-steerable and thruster nozzles. Besides delivering improved efficiency and increased thrust, the application of a nozzle can also be to reduce noise and vibration levels.

This has led to the introduction of nozzles in almost all types of ships, including tugs, workboats, hopper dredgers, fishing boats, inland barges and supply boats.

Fig. 3D Picture of nozzle with base materials and welding joint preparation

The nozzles are constructed from shipbuilding quality steel and stainless steel. Depending on the diameter of the nozzle, the plate thickness of the outside wall and the thickness of the plates used for the suspension, can mount to approximately 60 mm. “Producing with high quality against the lowest costs”, can only be realized when the correct welding process is practiced with the corresponding welding consumables.

Aluminium has been used in shipbuilding industry as marine vessels, Yachts etc. for more than 100 years because of its light weight and ease of fabrication. Aluminium combines both good corrosion and fatigue resistance. For the hull construction commonly 5086 (AlMg4Mn) and 5083 (AlMg4.5Mn) are used and are easy to weld. Hull plating of 4.5 mm and above easily accommodates MIG-Pulse welding. TIG welding will be used for the more difficult detailed work such as attachments.

Offshore- or similar structural components have to be able to withstand extremely adverse climatological conditions. Compared to other constructions, enhanced safety margins are required for welded joints, resulting in additional selection criteria for type of welding process and kind of filler material. Offshore constructions are built with CMn- and low alloyed high strength structural steels. Where possible, multirun submerged arc welding in plate thicknesses from 12 to over 100 mm, is the most efficient welding process. Offshore- or similar steel structures in heavy plate thicknesses, applied in severely loaded components at design temperatures down to -10° through -40°C require the use of high quality consumables for welding processes as SMAW, FCAW and SAW.

Common qualification aspects for such welding consumables include:

Excellent welding characteristics with: stable, good controllable metal transfer with very

limited spattering; high deposit rates – efficiency; smooth wetting of base material avoiding stress

raisers due to undercutting or lack of penetration; sound weld metal (no porosity or other defects).

Very low hydrogen level in the weld deposits (IIW dec.II-1155-9 or ISO/DIS 3690): HDM ≤ 5 ml/100 gram providing a high safety margin for crack free

weldments; easy consumable handling due to extra moisture

resistance (EMR), SaharaReadyPack or Sahara Ready Bag.

High and reliable mechanical properties yield and tensile strength overmatching

the parent material; impact properties typically ISO-V > 47 Joules at the

required temperature in face and root area; fracture toughness properties above

current limits viz. CTOD > 0.25 mm

20 STRUCTURES FOR LOW TEMPERATURE DESIGN APPLICATIONS

Page 21: SHIPBUILDING - Lincoln Electric · 2015-09-15 · Lincoln Electric Company founded in 1895 today is the world leader in design, development and manufacturing of arc welding products,

The acceptable minimum impact test temperature in procedure tests depends on the alloying level of the used welding consumable, base material, dilution, welding process, etc. In general, for -20°C and -30°C applications unalloyed welding consumables can be used. For applications down to -40°C, unalloyed or low alloyed welding consumables with 0.5 – 2.0% nickel can be recommended. This depends on additional requirements as f.e. CTOD properties. Vessels like ice breakers working under arctic conditions need high mechanical properties especially ductility and impact properties.

The Lincoln Electric Europe products in table 6. fulfil all above mentioned requirements and are qualified for welding offshore steels or similar structural components.
