With love of life and nature, Mr. Yinchao Shi composed in his Sailboat Series a visually stunning ode to people and

the ocean. On colorful canvases, he portrays in great detail the dazzling sunshine, choppy water, and speedy sailboats.

The romantic imagery of energetic people on board joining nature in a symphony of the sea is sure to have a profound

effect on the audience.

Mr. Yinchao Shi has never been weary of artistic pursuit. He began his career in Chinese painting, then turned to woodcuts. His

diligence and indefatigable pursuit has produced achievements in both media. Still, he was never satisfied.

His decade-long residency in America and exposure to modern western art excited in him a strong new urge for creation and artistic

expression. He wasted no time embarking on a new quest for expression and experimentation with his passions for natural beauty and

individuality in a mixture of eastern and western art styles. He at once fell in love with the practice of western oil painting; then he

researched modern acrylic techniques. Studies and repetitive experimentations have been both time and energy consuming. But the

results are rewarding: his brushes manage to combine the sentiment of water-ink paintings, the rhythm of chromatic contrast from

woodcuts, and the planar alternation of oil paintings into an organic mix, a mix that features the brightness, heaviness, and colorfulness

of acrylics. His new techniques enable interactions of various artistic forms and languages to achieve a harmony of East and West, of

tradition and modernity.

Blue Californian coastline, ocean bays, variegated cityscapes, coruscating light on multi-colored water, and the strong contrast of

complementary hues - all these elements call for the appropriate language of acrylics in his search for beauty and studies of the

environs.

Yinchao places stress on color contrast and pays attention to rich variations in like colors. Simple composition is filled with rich

content. Some paintings feature serene scenes, while others are filled with hundreds of boats racing windward or scores of sails fully

spread. Soothingly, quietude and motion are brought together in unison. For example, two paintings, Bustling Bay and Twin Anchors,

are a unique American scene: sunlight dappled sailboats against azure sky and ocean glitter in dazzling light and color; brilliant hulls,

shining masts, and intriguingly interlaced white riggings construct a contrast between plane and line. The treatment of water reflection

and its subtle chromatic change from warm to cool colors fill the canvas with liveliness. Both titles are realistic, and the artist misses no

detail of vessel or setting. Conscious decoration of brilliant red and green on a blue palette is visually

astonishing. His Long Voyage and Cruise emphasize the triangular multicolored spinnakers, jibs, and

mainsails to create a strong forward momentum in high wind. The choppy white waves are the natural

resistance to the boats, which is reinforced by the handling of the white clouds. The first two paintings

are mostly calm scenes with localized photic and chromatic activities, while the latter two feature big

action with graceful poise. The equilibrium of stillness and motion are sure to have a profound effect

on the audience.

The uncomplicated expression of colors may have created strong visual stimulation, but we appreciate

more the balance and harmony of form and color. At the same time, the painting has great elegance in

its appropriately portrayed objects. Especially in Long Voyage, the artist purposely subjected the

triangular sails to a curve transformation to create a kind of formal aesthetic value. The realistic use

of color is the result of the artist's careful calculation. The texture of sail canvases carries a signature

of America symbolism. These paintings are representative of Yinchao's works during his sojourn in

the U.S.

The artist's great adeptness in painting seascapes and ocean journeys is largely attributable to his life

on the Pacific coast and his work in Shanghai harbor. His passion for the ocean and appreciation thereof never fail to inspire his

command of the brush. His eagerness to learn always puts him on a path to the next artistic breakthrough.

Yinchao is an old friend of mine and worked along side me as a newspaper art editor in the 1960's and 70's. I know well that his

diligence and dedication always drive him to relentlessly pursue perfection and a higher level of artistic articulation through study,

research, and practice.
