Glendea is a 17 year old youth that attended Whitehaven High. She graduated

May 2015. She has applied to three colleges and universities. Thus far,

she has been accepted to Tennessee State University and Southwest

Community College. She has a history with the Department dating back to

2003. She has overcome so many obstacles while being in State’s

Custody. Glendea is an Honor Roll student. She is currently working at

McDonald’s and maintained her GPA while doing so. She is an active

member in the church; she is a member of the Youth 4 Youth Board in the

community and is a member of Dream Seekers.

Glendea is currently placed in the home of Reverend Eddie and Christine

Sykes. They have been a support of Glendea since she entered custody with

her siblings Jasmine, Melissa and Diana in 2003. She and her siblings left

custody in 2007 through SPG but Glendea and Diana Howard returned to

State’s Custody in 2011 due to their behavior in school and the home. Mr. & Mrs. Sykes never gave up on her

even though she was placed in multiple resource homes due to her behavior.

Glendea has always maintained love for her mother and has always wanted to return home to her. It was not

until she reached high school that she realized that her mother was never going to be stable enough to obtain

custody of her. She didn’t want to be adopted nor did she want to exit custody through SPG. She stated her

needs would be better educationally by remaining in custody and receiving Extension of Foster Care

Services. In February 2014, Glendea was able to return to the Sykes home after they completed the PATH

requirements to become a child specific home. She has been doing very well in the home. KUDOS to Glendea

and special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Sykes for being there for Glendea!

The Department is going back to using the age-old term everyone understands. Let’s just call them “foster parents.”

Here’s a note from John Johnson, director of foster care and adoption, about the coming shift in language:

“We will be transitioning from the reference of “resource parent” to “foster parent.” If you

have been around for some time, you probably know we began using the reference to

resource parent back in the early 2000’s as we moved to the dual approval system for

fostering and adopting. We will begin changing the language in forms, including the use of

“foster homes.”

New Terminology – “Foster Parent”
