How important is sports chiropractic to the overall image and reputation of the chiropractic profession with the general public?

Hugely important. Quite simply, given the star power of elite athletes, nothing provides more positive press than their per-sonal experience, example, and endorsement of chiropractic.

All of this is well illustrated in the USA by the actions of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (www.f4cp.com) which has a mission of “generating positive press for the chiroprac-tic profession and increasing public awareness of the many benefitsassociatedwithchiropracticcare.”Dominating theF4CP website is NFL hall-of famer Jerry Rice, the most fa-mous wide receiver ever and looking a picture of health, and saying “I did a lot of things to stay in the game, but regular visitstomychiropractorwereamongthemostimportant.”

The majority of F4CP’s Champions of Chiropractic press re-leases and advertisements feature sports stars. attended a special session hosted by ESPN television anchor Linda Cohn where presenters and panelists included NFL stars Jerry Rice (San Francisco 49ers) and Mark Collins (New York Giants), Olympic skiing gold medalist Picabo Street and prominent sports chiropractors.

For the American Chiropractic Associations’ 50th anniver-sary celebrations in Washington, DC held March 7-10 the ACA invited the F4CP to present another sports chiropractic panel. This was chaired by FICS Secretary-General Dr Philip Santiago of New Jersey.

Keynote celebrity was John Booty, former NFL star with the New York Jets. Booty spoke of the fundamental importance

of chiropractic to both prevention of injuries and, where inju-ry occurred, quick recovery. Other panelists included Miami Dolphins’ chiropractor for the past 15 years Dr Spencer Bar-on, Dr Alan Sokoloff, chiropractor for the superbowl cham-pion Baltimore Ravens and Dr Jay Greenstein, chiropractor for the Washington Redskins cheerleaders.

To coincide with the ACA’s celebrations and conference Roll Call, the weekly Washington DC news read by all members of the Congress, featured a full back page advertisement of Jerry Rice promoting chiropractic.

This FICS News features testimonials from a number of elite athletes on how the care given by sports chiropractors has been of fundamental importance to them and their careers.

NFL football players in America, in-cluding all-time great wide receiver Jerry Rice, make this point. Australian Melissa Hoar, double world champion in surf lifesaving and an Olympian in Skeleton, does the same – and is now a student at Palmer College West in California. See the testimony of several athletes in the interview with Dr Craig Buhler, chiropractor to the Utah Jazz in the National Basketball Association for 26 years.

Thank you to those who sent news from their countries for this issue of the FICS News, including Dr Marcelo Botelho

FroM the edItor MustaFa agaoglu, dC

(Brazil) and Dr Richard Gakner (Israel—on preparations for the Maccabi Games). When did you last send news about sports chiropractic in your country to the FICS News? Why not do this now for the next issue? Send to Christina Davis at [email protected].

Congratulations to the newly elected members of the FICS Council, introduced in Dr Phil Santiago’s report. I look for-ward to meeting you and many others at our Assembly and Symposium in Durban, South Africa next month. I want to add my voice to others in thanking Foot Levelers for spon-sorship of these meetings, and my alma mater Life Univer-sity for sponsorship of the original research competition and awards.

Safe travels, and see you in Durban.

Dr Craig Buhler, a 1978 graduate of Western States Chiropractic College, Portland, Oregon and member of the ACA Sports Council, the FICS mem-ber for the USA, practices in Kaysville, Utah and has worked with athletes in

the NBA, NFL, PGA, the Stanford swim team, and many world champions. From 1969-72 he attended the University of Utah on an athletic scholarship with honors in track and field. For all of his 26 year tenure as team chiropractor for the Utah Jazz the team had the lowest “player missed games due to injury rate” (61 per year) of any NBA team (league aver-age 141).Dr Buhler travelled with five of his patients to the 2010 Van-couver Winter Games where two of them won medals, bronze and gold, even though they had sustained serious injuries in prior months. He and some of his patients, including NBA star John Stockton, are featured in the new documentary Doctored.Dr Buhler gave this interview to FICS at the American Chi-ropractic Association’s recent legislative conference in Wash-ington, DC which he was attending as the ACA delegate for Utah.

What is your personal background in sports?Track-and-fieldwasmymaininterest.IhighjumpedatHighSchool and then went on to earn a scholarship as a walk on and competed in the 400 meter and mile relay at the Univer-sity of Utah.

What brought you to chiropractic care and why did you choose to be a chiropractor? While running at the University of Utah I was constantly bothered with pain in my left foot but no one could seem to figureitoutorhelp.Iusedeverythingthetrainerhadtoofferbut nothing seemed to help. I just trained through the pain until my third year when the pain became so severe I could no longer run and lost my scholarship. An orthopedic surgeon onexaminingmyfootcouldnotfindanythingwrongbutsug-gested that if I wanted to continue to run he could operate and put screws and wires in to stabilize the joint. This seemed insane to me at the time.

Two years after leaving the University a friend referred me at a time when my old track injury to my left foot was so painful itwasdifficulttowalk.Ihadalsobeensufferingfromseveremigraine headaches for much of my life and no one could helpme.MyfirsttreatmentwasdramaticbecausewhenIgotoffthetreatmenttablethefootpainIhadexperiencedforfiveyears was gone. I realized there was more to chiropractic than I had heard from my medical doctor – I innately knew that chiropractic was the profession I could use to help athletes avoid the frustrations I had experienced.

Featured IntervIew – CraIg Buhler

What were the best and worst things about your experience in chiropractic college? The best was the amazing things I learned about the human body. The worst thing was the negative attitude of many of the faculty towards the foundation of the philosophy of chiro-practic, our innate healing powers. This foundation was seen asunscientificandsothefullpowerofchiropracticwasmar-ginalized. It was only some years later that I discovered and understood the importance of these philosophical concepts.

Where and how did you start in practice? After graduation I opened my clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah aftergettinganSBAloan.Ileasedanofficerightnextdoorto a chiropractor who had been in practice for many years. I discovered the more chiropractors there were in a building the better they all did.

How did you help the Utah Jazz to such an impressive injury-free record? Explain your fundamental approach to practice. In addition to standard chiroprac-tic I used a system I call Advanced Muscle Integration Technique or AMIT. The AMIT system intre-grates seventeen different disci-plines. This technique involve range of motion analysis and the precision testing of 720 muscles for neuro-proprioceptive function. This allows for the determination of positions of instability and pre-disposition to injury. By predicting where an injury could occur and by reactivating the proprioceptive integrity of the muscle throughaseriesoftherapeuticreflexpoints,notonlyarein-juries prevented, performance improves dramatically.

A basketball player whose ankle stabilizer muscles are pro-prioceptively inhibited is more likely to sprain that ankle. If the internal hip rotators are not performing properly the athlete is going to be more prone to problems with the knee caps and vulnerable to knee injuries. I don’t treat symptoms, Ifindthecauseandthenit’samatterofapplyingthedifferenttherapies that I use to make the corrections.

The players came to trust that if they did get hurt they would be on the court within minutes or by the next day. The re-sultsareveryfast.Inthemovie“Doctored”JohnStocktonisshown spraining his left ankle during a play-off game. He had to be helped off the court in severe pain. How did you develop your muscle testing system? While attending chiropractic college I had the opportunity to work and study with the late Dr Alan Beardall during the de-velopment of what became known as Clinical Kinesiology. I expanded his muscle work by looking at the interrelation-ships between muscle function, range of motion, restrictions and the causes of pain. My further studies included a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Utah, School of Med-icine with a focus on motor physiology. I had the amazing opportunity to work with some of the best athletes and teams in the world which allowed me to test and challenge my ideas on bodies stressed at maximal levels. It allowed me to see what worked and what didn’t. I continued to study many other bodies of work which gave me more tools to test. As I integrated these tools the result became the AMIT method.

HowdidyoufirststartworkingfortheUtahJazz? When the New Orleans Jazz franchise was moved to Salt Lake in 1979 head trainer Don Sparks was interviewing for a number of team physicians including a chiropractor. He came in to interview me and described the problem he had with his ankle for a number of years. I evaluated and treated the ankle and when he stood up on it the pain was gone. The next day he brought in the Jazz star forward Adrian Dantley, who had some problems since his college days that had never re-sponded to the regular physical therapy modalities and medi-calapproach.Iwasabletodefineandcorrecttheseproblems.Sparksthenbeganreferringotherplayerstomyoffice.

Results were good and he next asked me to call Kirk Josefek, DCwhohadbeenworkingwith theBostonCeltics tofindout the arrangement the team had made with him. Dr. Josefek was the first chiropractor to workwith an NBA team. Hewas in the locker room before every home game, was given season tickets, and was paid for each game he worked. Don Sparks approached the Jazz management with the idea and I was in – but minus the pay.

For many years I had to maintain incredible diplomacy to keep myself out of trouble with the other physicians on staff. Few teams in the NBA had chiropractors on staff at that time, but as time passed other teams called the Jazz to ask how they utilized a chiropractor on their medical staff. This opened the door for other chiropractors to work with professional teams.

I worked with the Jazz after clinic hours on a part time basis. The1997-98 seasonwas thefirstone that Iworkedexclu-sively for the Jazz fulltime. The season involved attendance before, during, and after all home games and meeting the team during long east coast road trips. During the playoffs I attended the team on all their road games. Most of my work involved maximizing function, although there was of course the treatment of injuries. Every player was evaluated before every game using motion palpation and muscle testing. If in-dicated they were adjusted. Spinal adjustments are the key and core of everything I do, but it is the combination with clinical kinesiology that brings best results.

Tell us about your patients who won medals at the Vancouver Olympics? The gold medalist was Australian snowboarder Torah Bright. Eight weeks before the Olympics she suffered a concussion and dislocated her jaw when she hit the edge of the halfpipe at the X-Games. Two weeks after this mishap she came to me complaining of headaches and lack of balance. I began treat-ment and she passed neurological tests and returned to train-ing a week later. However three weeks later she sustained a second concussion in another accident and again was unable to stand one on leg with eyes closed and keep her balance. I implemented daily treatments until the day of her event – and she won the gold medal in the women’s halfpipe. (Bright, who has been treated by Dr Buhler since 2006 said this of Dr Buhler’s work in an interview by Dick Harmon published in the Deseret News following the Olympics: “I can’t live without it. After my initial course of treatments with many

and varied corrections made over time I felt and continue to feel more energetic, train with more capacity, and injuries that have bothered me have disappeared.

My competition results have been better than ever. And my body feels better than ever. I’m just one of many elite athletes that have been helped and maintained by Dr Buhler and his program.”).

The other patient who medaled was Shannon Bahrke who won the bronze medal in women’s moguls. She approached me a year before the Olympics because of knee pain aggra-vated by training after she had rehabbed a cruciate ligament repair. Shannon, who gave me permission to discuss her case in interviews at the time, was soon able to return to competi-tion, made the 2010 team and won her medal in an event that places maximum stresses on the knees.

How can others learn about your AMIT approach to muscle testing and athletic injuries? My website www.amitmethod.com has information about the technique, testimonials, videos, and a schedule of seminars. I am in the process of producing DVD training materials with a release date sometime this northern summer. I am also soon releasing a wireless muscle testing device for quantifying muscle function, which will assist in training doctors to be more accurate in their muscle testing skills.

I believe the AMIT method is the most effective approach to assessing and correcting muscle function yet developed. Tim Ferriss, who spent ten years evaluating different systems around the world, lists AMIT as the top system for reversing apparently permanent injuries in his book The 4 Hour Body. His endorsement means a lot to me.

perform PRP and Prolozone injections to accelerate healing and regeneration of tissues following surgery. I work with a great team of orthopedic physicians who specialize in differ-ent parts of the body and have a high degree of technical skill for reconstructive surgery. Once they have performed their correction, we begin treatments to accelerate the rehabilita-tion process.

What advice do you have for a new graduate wanting to specialize in sports chiropractic?Intern with a doctor who has a history of working with an athletic team, it is the best way to learn practical and effec-tive ways of correcting common athletic injuries. Stay hum-ble or the doors of opportunity that are opened to you will be slammed in your face. Learn as many techniques as you can because the more tools you have the better your results will be.

Anyfinalcommentoradvice? The field of sports chiropractic is rapidly opening up as aresult of the efforts many of us have made through the years. Athletes are demanding their teams offer chiropractic be-causeitworks.Ifachiropractorfindsanopportunitytogetinvolved with a team, approach the trainer or coach by ask-ing if you can spend time learning more about what they do to treat and take care of players. Few trainers or coaches will refuse a person interested in learning from them.

This allows you to establish a relationship. The relationship will lead to opportunities to talk about other options you have learnedforthetreatmentofspecificinjuries.Eventually, youwill get the opportunity to show what you can do and then the necessary level of trust will be created.

Durban AssemblyI am currently preparing my Secretary-General’s report for the Durban Assembly – and it is so rewarding to review the huge progress of the past year and exciting plans for 2013. Some highlights include:

• Full unity achieved in international sports chiropractic, with all established national sports chiropractic councils as FICS members and working together for common goals.

• FICS members or teams attending national and interna-tional games in all world regions, most notably last year at the London Olympics, most notably this year at the World Games in Cali, Colombia. As examples of individual efforts by ExCo members, Dr Marcelo Botelho of Brazil has recently served at the World Judo Team Championships in Salvador, Brazil and Dr Dale Richardson of Australia continues on the PGA Tour with several of the world’s top 20 golfers. FICS is preparing teams for World DanceSport Championships in Taiwan and TWIF European Championships in tug-of-war in the Netherlands both in September.

• Continued outstanding work by so many volunteers. No one does more for FICS than Dr Sheila Wilson, President, and Dr Tim Stark, Co-Chair, FICS Education Commission. Tim is strongly supported by Dr Rikke Craven, the other Co-Chair of the Education Commission, who is to be honored for her continuing and many years of service to FICS at the Durban Assembly.

CMCC. Currently he practices at CMCC’s South Riverdale Chiropractic Clinic and at the Multi-disciplinary Achieva Health in Toronto.

I know you will join me in welcoming these experienced and outstanding leaders to the FICS ExCo. Dr Charmaine Kor-poraal of South Africa, formerly representing Africa, and Dr GaeryBarberyofAustralia, formerlyrepresentingthePacific, continue on the ExCo in their respective Executive positions of Secretary and Vice-President. The three individuals being recommended by the ExCo to the Assembly as Members at Large are Dr John Downes and Dr Dale Richardson, mem-bers of the last ExCo, and Dr Philippe Roulet of Switzerland, Chair of the FICS Communications Commission.

Brian Nook moves to APCEIn February Dr Brian Nook, Chair of the FICS International Federations Com-mission and until last December, Dean, School of Chiropractic and Sports Sci-ence, Murdoch University in Perth, took up the position of Head of College at the Australian College of Physical Educa-tion (ACPE ) in Sydney.

The ACPE is an independent specialist tertiary education institution which offers degree programs in physical educa-tion,sportscoaching,healthandfitness,danceeducationandsports management.

Responsible for FICS having effective communication within FICS, within the chiropractic profession and externally with stakeholders in the sports world.Main achievements for 2012 were the continued high quality of the FICS News, published quarterly, and getting our FICS internal communications website COM-

FICS at www.fics-sport.org up and running. A special thank you to Christina Davis and Dr Julie Scarano who are assisting in the roll out of the website.

Priorities for this website in 2013 are deciding on both access and action levels for our various categories of members, and then marketing the website to everyone in our organization. We need to have everyone in FICS using the website and having it at top-of-mind every time they have a meeting, every time they write a report, publish guidelines etc. Only then will the COMFICSwebsitedeliveritsfullpotentialbenefitstoFICS.

All necessary decisions should be made by the time of the ExCo Meeting and Assembly in Durban in April.

July 2012 saw the resignation of Dr Chris Wegelin as Chair, as well as Dr Sherri LaShomb as a general member. As the incoming chair, I would like to thank Chris and Sherri for their substantial con-tributions and to Chris for his help with hand-over.

The two largest sources of income for FICS are the sponsorship program and the ICSSD program. Both programs are under active review by the FINCo. On sponsor-ship, a review paper has been tabled for discussion at the next FICS ExCo meeting. It is felt that, whilst we currently have a group of generous and committed sponsors, it is worth estab-lishing more and improved ways of servicing these sponsors and in doing so, developing a strong platform to attract more. Sports chiropractic through FICS is a strong brand and lever-aged correctly should provide great sponsorship value and benefittobothFICSanditsfinancialcontributors.

Multi-sport, multi-national games such as the World Games, second only to the Olympics in size, are more complex. Much work has been devoted to preparation for the World Games to be held in Cali, Colombia, July 25 – Aug 4, 2013. FICS received 45 applications from 18 countries for the Games and will have a team of approximately 35.

There is a blinded selection process (as to name, race, na-tionality, gender, origin of education and professional asso-ciation) and main criteria are level of post-graduate sports chiropractic education, ongoing on-field experience at thelocal, national and international levels, and participation in related volunteer activities. The IWGA is now reviewing and approving the proposed team, which will then be announced.

AustraliaAn Olympian at Palmer WestMelissa Hoar, who represented Australia in Skeleton at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, is now an 8th quarter chi-

ropractic student at Palmer College, West Campus under the World Olympic Scholarship Program, run by the FICS WOSP Commission chaired by Dr Angela Salcedo. An outstanding all-around ath-lete, Melissa was a two-time world champion in surf lifesaving, is a past member of the Australian Universi-ties Women’s Soccer team, and was a silver medalist at the National Track and Field Championships as a high school athlete. Here is an edited ar-ticle Melissa has submitted to the FICS News.As an athlete I have had exposure to all kinds of treatments for injury and injury prevention. I have had surgeries, injec-tions, prescription medications, NSAIDS, and all forms of physical medicine, including but not limited to chiropractic care, taping, physiotherapy, ultrasound, laser and light thera-py, instrument assisted manual therapy, and soft-tissue treat-ments of all kinds.

In all my experience with these treatment methods the one that has had the greatest impact on me as an athlete has been chiropractic care. This began in 2007 when I suffered a Grade 3 tear through my hamstring, and, typical of an athlete, rushed my rehabilitation and returned to competition too soon. I de-veloped a worsening tendon injury at my hamstring origin.

This injury became so bad I could hardly walk. I could not sit, climb stairs, walk up hills, tie my shoes, or even dress with-out experiencing pain. I had an MRI and was told I would never recover without a full tendon reconstruction.

I chose to delay the surgery, and, as a last effort to avoid it, saw a chiropractor.

Slowly but surely my pain began to subside to a point where I was able to jog, then to sprint and lift weights, and then to

BrazilThis is an exciting time for sports and sports chiropractic in Brazil, with the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2014 and the 2016 Summer Olympics being held in Rio de Janeiro.

As in several other countries Brazil’s sports chiropractic or-ganization has recently moved to become part of the Brazil-ian Chiropractors’ Association and is now known as Asso-ciação de Quiropraxia Esportiva (ABQ Sport). This has been done to comply with Brazilian regulations and laws.

Members of ABQ Sport are active in many parts of the country with various teams and events. Dr Stephanie Steigleder pro-vides weekly care to 15 members of the senior team of the ten-nis club in her home town of Novo Hamburgo and works at ten-nis competitions in her home state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). I chose chiropractic school because of my experience with chiropractic and the principle behind chiropractic care - to work with manual and natural methods with the body and its innate healing mechanisms. However this would not have been possible for me without the Olympian Scholarship Pro-gram and I am extremely grateful for that. I am encouraging fellow Olympians to utilize this program and this amazing educational opportunity.

Training and studying is a full time and challenging schedule as I take time to train and compete for the upcoming 2014 Win-ter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The class I began school with is now entering its 11th quarter; I am entering the 8th quarter. However I am pursuing my dreams in sport and chiropractic and I am passionate about both. When I graduate I would like to give back to athletes and sports teams so that they discover the amazing potential of regular chiropractic treatment.

ICE JAM 2013HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA

The inaugural Ice Jam Major Midge Hockey Tournament was held January 9 - 13, 2013 at the BMO Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The RCCSS(C) and the chiropractic profession were well represented as the Organizing Committee had en-listed the assistance of Dr. Brian Seaman to serve as the Chair of Medical Services for the event.

Dr. Seaman’s past experience in-cludes four (4) Winter Olympic Games as well as being the Chair of Medical Services for the 2011 Canada Winter Games. Joining Dr. Seaman on the Medical Committee were Dr. Tina Atkinson (Chief Medi-cal Officer) and Laura Lundquist(Chief Therapist). Host Medical Team volunteers from the area in-cluded physicians (2), chiropractors (5), physiotherapists (4), dentists (2) and massage therapists (4). In addition to Dr. Seaman and Dr. Eric Helson, there were three residents: Dr. Chuck Dauphinee, Dr. Matt Cochran and Dr. Warren Hefford.

As part of the planning, the Host Medical Committee ascer-tained if a ‘trainer’ would be accompanying each team and if so,whatwere thequalificationsof each individual.Thisassisted Host Medical Services in determining coverage for each game. All 18 of the participating teams were advised of the protocols of the tournament as established by the Host Medical Committee.

These included the current concussion guidelines (Zurich 2008). Given the importance of properly assessing for con-cussions, each team was provided with a laminated SCAT2 concussion card as part of their registration package.

A medical assessment area was set up for the tournament. In total there were 35 players who were assessed and/or treated in the medical area for a total of 44 visits. The summary of the injuries is as follows:

• Lacerations (requiring sutures) – Five (5) players re-quiring seven (7) visits.

• Abrasions – Three (3).

• Concussions – Four (4) of the seven (7) individuals evaluatedhadconcussionsconfirmed.Oneoftheseindividu-als, who was rendered unconscious as a result of an on-ice hit (12/01/13), was immobilized on a spine board and trans-ported to the QEII Emergency Department (HI Site) via EHS.

• Contusions (bruising) – Six (6). Two (2) of these play-ers were also sent for x-rays to rule out fractures (hand and foot); in both instances x-rays were negative.

• Ligamentous sprains/muscular strains –Thirteen (13).

• “Stinger” – One.

Feedback from the teams, players and parents has been very positive with respect to the manner in which Host Medical Services were established for the inaugural East Coast Ice Jam. These comments included a quote from Geoff Newton, Chair of the Organizing Committee:

“Dr. Seaman and his staff are world class as Dr. Seaman himself worked the Vancouver Olympics so I am very lucky to have his involvement at the tournament. I look forward to next year and hope to provide the same level of service!”

Jody Serra has worked with the 49ers since the days of Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, regularly seeing players for pre-game treatments when they play the Jets, Giants or Eagles.

In 2011, he also treated 49ers players in Washington, D.C., before a Redskins game and ahead of the Thanksgiving Day game against the Ravens in Baltimore. When the 49ers are home in San Francisco, the players are treated by chiropractor Nick Athens, a colleague and friend of Serra’s from their days at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.

In 1990, Athens referred former 49ers running back Roger Craig to Serra when the 49ers were on the road. Craig became Serra’s first professional athlete client and Serra treated him in NewOrleans in 1990, ahead of Super Bowl XXIV against the Bron-cos.“The49ersbeattheBroncos55-10inablowout,”Serrasaid.
