1 Introduction

This document gives an overview of the link between the Scia Engineer application and the Max Frank software for punching shear reinforcement design.

Scia Engineer is a general purpose application for civil engineering structures with analysis and design capabilities for concrete, steel, timber and composite materials. It is based on a powerful finite element engine with numerous features. Scia (http://www.scia-online.com) is part of the Nemetschek group with headquarters in Belgium.

CADS (http://www.cadsglobal.com) has partnered with Scia in the UK providing software sales, support and customisation for the UK market. A few of Scia Engineer customers in the UK are shown below:

Max Frank, previously known by BRC (http://www.maxfrank.co.uk/), offers a wide range of products for construction engineers and contractors. This includes shearail punching shear reinforcement, spacers made of fibre reinforced concrete, reinforcement connection systems, joint sealing products and formwork accessories.

Shearail is a prefabricated punching shear reinforcement system for flat, piled and post-tensioned slabs which replaces the traditional loose links. Max Frank offers a design program for design of Shearails.

2 Overview of Scia Engineer

Start the application by specifying the type of project. The Structure option is used for building structures.

Enter the basic data for the project. The design code and the default project materials are specified here. The software works on various levels. General XYZ and Advanced allows you to use the entire modelling capabilities.

The Functionality page of the project data allows you to choose the required functionality for the project. For example to perform a non-linear analysis, wind & snow load generation, mobile loads, GA drawings etc.

The application main screen is shown below.

Start creating the model using the options under the Structure tree.

The Column option under 1D member create a column along the global Z axis. Member is a more generic option allowing you to create 1D member in any plane. The properties (length, cross-section, orientation) of the column are specified just before the member is created. It can also be modified through the properties dialog later.

The cross-section library allows choosing the necessary cross-sections. The library is accessed by clicking the ... next to the cross-section in the properties or from menu or tree item Library -> Cross-sections.

When creating a column the co-ordinates can be specified through the command line or specified graphically by clicking on the dot grid.

The concrete grade for the selected member can be modified through the cross-section properties dialog. Clicking the ... next to the Material opens the material library with a list of available materials. User defined materials can be added here.

Similarly the floor slab can be added using the 2D member -> Plate command. The properties of the plate are specified and the geometry defined by entering the co-ordinates or picking graphically. The command line presents various options for defining the floor slab with slight or curved edges.

Once the slab is defined more details can be added to it like openings, local thickening etc. using the 2D member components. The supports are specified using the support in node option (Main tree -> Structure -> Model data -> Support). A variety of support options is possible.

Complete the model by defining the loads. Loads are assigned to load cases. Load cases are classified into permanent and variable loads. Automatic self-weight can be specified.

The below picture shows 1.5kN/m2 area load applied to the slab under DL (dead) load case.

Code dependent combinations can be created by adding the required load cases with unity partial factors.

Complete the structural analysis by clicking on ‘Calculation’.

Preview the analysis results using the Results -> 2D member options. The Refresh button in the actions tab refreshes all the chosen results.

Once you are happy with the analysis results proceed to concrete design. The 2D member setup within the concrete tree allows you to specify the parameters for design.

Selecting member design and clicking on refresh in the properties all allow you to complete the reinforcement design.

On completing the main reinforcement design, proceed to specify the punching shear parameters. Now follow the instructions in section 4 of this document to complete the link.

3 Overview of Max Frank

The Shearail design program from Max Frank allows you to design proprietary punching shearails as a replacement for traditional links. The program can be downloaded from the MaxFrank website. The opening screen of the program is shown below with various column cross-section and edge conditions it supports.

The necessary details are entered in the tabbed dialog. Clicking on Calculate in the last tab produces a reinforcement design for punching shear.

A detailed step by step calculation result is presented below along with a Shearail layout diagram. The layout can be exported as a DXF file.

Please follow the below steps to complete the link:

1. Create the model of the structure in Scia Engineer

2. Perform the structural analysis (Main tree -> Calculation, mesh -> Calculation).

3. Perform the concrete design (Main tree -> Concrete -> 2D member -> Member design).

4. Specify the punching data (Main tree -> Concrete -> 2D member -> Punching -> Punching data).

5. Perform a single check (Concrete -> Punching -> Punching check)

Click on Single Check from the Properties dialog.

6. Preview the document

In the single check dialog, move to the Document setup tab and click on the MaxFrank command.

This opens the Max Frank Shearail application with the data from Scia Engineer.

The scope of the link is limited to the data supported in the single check of Scia Engineer. Hence walls & external returns are not supported.
