A Word From Your Agent...
Are you ready for the Kansas State Fair? The dates this year are September
8th-17th. If you are taking your own exhibits we do now have entry cards, and your
state fair ticket orders in the office. If the office is transporting your items please
don’t bring them in until Sept. 5th-8th. We leave at 8:30am sharp on the 8th. We
will only accept small items and foods on the 8th. We need the boxes and larger
projects first to pack the van accordingly.
4-H Events Council has once again approved funds to have door prizes at
Achievement Night! They have increased the budget so more youth will win
prizes. In the past we have had bikes, Fitbits, and Lego sets! We will be adding
some gift cards to the mix this year.
You have many ways to win a door prize, but you must be present to win! Even
new members that did not turn in awards materials for 2016-2017 can be entered
to win.
How to get your name is the drawings:
Attend Achievement Night on November 11th at Washburn Rural High School.
All 4-H’ers get one entry for attending.
Submit a non-competitive record book for judging. Not only does this get you
a gold award but it will win you one extra door prize entry!
Submit a competitive record book. These books are judged on the county
level and are eligible for project winners. This will get you two more door prize
entries! (Even if you do several Competitive books you will still only get two
entries.)
You can do all three of these things and get four chances at a door prize!! Each
4-H’er will only be allowed to win one prize. Talk to your club leaders about
when record books are due and make sure to get yours turned in!
~Candis
Non-Competitive Record Book Meeting
If you are new to 4-H or just doing a record book for the first time we would like to
invite you to an information meeting about 4-H Record Books. The meeting will start at
6pm, on September 6th and be located in the Extension Upstairs Meeting Room.
Record books are the way that 4-H teaches the life skill of record keeping and is a way
you can show how you have grown in your projects. Youth are welcome to come!
If you are planning to come please e-mail Candis at [email protected] so we can
have enough materials for everyone.

The Extension Office will begin to accept State Fair
exhibits starting Sept. 5th (with the exception for
foods *see below.) Transportation for animals, large
woodwork, large electric, large rockets or any open
class exhibits is your responsibility. Because
transportation space is tight, we request that if you
plan to be at the state fair on entry day you transport
your own exhibits if possible. Check-in for all exhibits
will be on Friday, September 8th.
All exhibits except for foods must be into the
Extension Office by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday,
September 7th. Foods exhibits must be into the
Extension Office by 8:30 a.m. sharp on Friday,
September 8th. Any late exhibits will be left in
Topeka.
Packing instructions: If you would like
extension staff to transport your exhibits to the
state fair, please see that they are securely
packed.
Clothing items should be placed in dry cleaning
bags. Geology and Entomology boxes should be
packed in the following manner: Cover the top with
cardboard, foam core or a carpet sample and
secure with heavy string. Avoid putting boxes
inside another box if at all possible. Also make
sure to have your entry cards completely filled out
and secured to your project . You will get the entry
cards at the office when you drop off. If you are
taking your own exhibit let us know so we can mail
entry cards to you.
If the office is transporting your exhibit we do our best to be careful, but we can’t be held responsible if something is broken or lost.

4-H Program Fee
We are now getting more details from the State Office about the 4-H Program Fee for the 2017-2018 4-H
year. Kansas 4-H has an annual $15 program fee for 4-H Community Club Members. Cloverbuds, 5-6-year-
old members, and adult volunteers are not charged the program fee. Kansas 4-H Program Fee is non-
refundable after the payment has been made. This is true for individuals who have paid or clubs paying for
youth.
The important thing that your club needs to do now is decide if they wish to pay the fee for the members.
Clubs do not have to do this, but if they do, are they paying for their members at enrollment time or
reimbursing members later. This would have to be something that would be voted on during a meeting.
Your club can decide to reimburse members if they want to ensure that a youth participates with the club. You
cannot have attendance requirements to be a club member, but you can have attendance requirements for
anything above membership. Paying the enrollment fee would be above membership. Reimbursing members
would also be something the club would have to vote on.
When members start to enroll on Oct. 2nd there will be drop down boxes on how they will pay their fee.
-I will pay online with a debit/credit card
- I will pay by mailing a check
- I am a cloverbud, there is no fee
-I wish to request a waiver
-A local sponsor has agreed to pay my fee
If your wishes to pay members’ fee at the time of enrollment, they would pick a sponsor has agreed to pay my
fee. The club will then be invoiced for their members periodically through the year.
If a youth is requesting a waiver from the $15 program fee you will have to write a short reason why you are
making the request. Reasons may include but are not limited to job loss, homelessness, free or reduced
school lunch, bankruptcy or health conditions. You will receive an e-mail within 10 business days if your
waiver was granted or not.
Your 4-H enrollment will not be active until the local office receives notice of your payment. If you have any
additional questions about the program fee please call the 4-H Agent, Candis Meerpohl at 785-232-0062 ext.
120.

Fair Board needs YOUR help!
They are looking for people who are motivated and have a
passion for helping show off all the Shawnee County
4-H’ers hard work. You do not need to be involved with 4-H
to be on the Fair Board. Meetings are every 4th Tuesday in
the Extension Meeting Room, starting at 7:00 p.m. Please
email Kim for more information at [email protected].
Jr. Leaders September Meeting
All 4-H youth 8th grade and above are welcome to attend our September 14th Jr. Leader meeting! It is important that any interested youth let Candis know they are attending by September 11th because we will be starting this meeting with a shopping trip. At our last meeting, the youth wanted to create a checkout team building kit. This meeting we will be creating that kit. RSVP at [email protected] by Sept. 11th. At this time we will also discuss how last year went. What the group liked and didn’t like. We will make our
goals and plans for 2017-2018!
Parents can attend these meeting but will be asked to sit in the back of the room. This time is youth directed
and led. That way they get the leadership skills they would like.
Last year we had about 12 youth at each meeting. I hope to see a room full of 4-H leaders this year!
KAP Judging
Calling all volunteers to help judge Pottawatomie’s Competitive Record Books. They send about 40 books so
we will need helpers from all clubs. No youth will be allowed to judge, sorry.
I have reserved the downstairs meeting room on Oct. 12th and 13th for judging. It will be come and go but I do
need an RSVP on when you plan to come. That way I have an idea of how many people are helping and I will
know if I need to recruit more help. If you have never judged record books before you can still help. I will train
anyone one judging them.
I will also have the books at Events Council on the 12th if you would like to come early and judge before that
meeting. Please let me know by Oct. 6th who is judging, what club you are representing, and what areas you
are comfortable with.
If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail Candis at [email protected]. Thanks!!

Why Should Your Youth Hold A Club Office?
By: Amanda Miller
When I say the word “leader,” what is the first idea to come to mind? For many the names of famous historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr, Theodore Roosevelt, or Mahatma Gandhi may first arise in answer to this question. While each individual’s name may serve as a great example of leadership, it takes more than a singular story to understand what makes an effective leader. As best spoken by famous economist and leader Harold Greneen, “leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude and in actions.” In other words, leadership begins with the initiative to make change, question what is, and stay positive through difficulties.
Likewise, it is no secret that leadership is an important skill emphasized throughout the 4-H program. As youth we are all aware of various leaders in our own clubs and counties from a very young age. What makes these 4-Hers stand out? It begins with a simple first step: become an officer in your 4-H Club. While the election pro-cess may seem highly intimidating, especially to younger 4-H members, it is a great way to practice your lead-ership skills and become more involved in your club. One doesn’t need to become President in order to play a leadership role in their 4-H club. Young 4-Hers can prepare for the more involved senior offices by holding a Junior office, or by taking on smaller roles such as Song or Recreation Leader. Each office helps promote the development of lifelong skills like organization, responsibility, communication, leadership, and public speak-ing. So the next time you hear the word “leader,” remember it is not an unattainable status by a select few his-torical figures, but rather something which can be attained by something as small as running for a 4-H office.
You can also learn more about the roles and responsibilities of a 4-H Officer at the County's Officer Leader Training held October 1st. See related article for more information.
