WelcomeThe Collaborative Center for Literacy Development (CCLD) is pleased to sponsor the twentieth annual Share Fair. This is a unique experience of PreK-12 educators gathering to focus on a common theme of literacy across the content areas. More than 550 teachers from eight university sites across the state gather today to present the Literacy Action Plans they developed and implemented through action research during their yearlong intensive study of literacy instruction. The Share Fair provides a wonderful opportunity for educators to learn from and network with other educators who are committed to improving the literacy achievement of their students. We are delighted that you are here to celebrate and honor the successes of these educators!

Sometimes students turn away from notebooks believing they have nothing to say, nothing to write. Yet with poems as guides, we can gracefully and quickly discover many ways to listen to our hearts and minds. As a daily ritual or part of a unit, poetry can open discussions with others and with ourselves, helping writers of all ages answer the questions: How do I connect to our world? What must I say? How will I craft these words?

Amy Ludwig VanDerwater is author of children’s books and professional books including Forest Has a Song, Read! Read! Read!, With My Hands, and Poems Are Teachers: How Studying Poetry Strengthens Writing in All Genres. A graduate of Teachers College, Columbia University, former fifth grade teacher, and writing teacher of 20 years, Amy leads school assemblies, offers writing workshops for all ages, and speaks frequently at conferences. We plan to present various vocabulary strategies we have implemented this year in our respective content areas. Rob teaches 3rd grade math content throughout the school day. He has experimented with various vocabulary strategies to strengthen and enhance students comprehension and usage of math vocabulary. Pat teaches 3rd grade reading comprehension and vocabulary. She has implemented a variety of vocabulary strategies introduced during KRP training, as well as experimented with a number of strategies discovered on-line and from other resources, that have served to improve vocabulary development and reading comprehension.

I will be sharing a reading comprehension strategy we have been practicing all year called the 5 Finger Retell.I will also be sharing our classroom Literacy Family Project. Students took turns taking home our class “pet” Knuffle Bunny along with the book. Students read the book with their families and then had to take Knuffle Bunny on an “adventure” and write and draw about it and present it the next day to the class. We made all of the adventures into a class book.

Handwriting in preschool varies in many ways as we serve 3-5 year olds in our preschool. Some come in writing a letter perfectly and some come in not having the experience of holding a crayon. Our LAP addresses handwriting as the key for handwriting success which starts with fine motor development - without it, it will lead to stress on the student as well as the teacher. As fine motor skills progressed, we then provided more direct hands on writing experiences.

Steamboat Broadening Vocabulary Through Writing and Journaling

Using Words Their Way spelling instruction seemed like a great fit but for a first time user can be very overwhelming. I will share how using Words Their Way has greatly improved our spelling in grades 3-5, organization ideas that hopefully won’t make you want to pull your hair out, and resources that hold students accountable when working with new word patterns.

In the 2018-2019 school year, I will apply word analysis and vocabulary skills during whole group mini lessons. Students will work independently in 20 minute stations. The stations include differentiated work in each station with scaffolded Learning Targets in each station. Stations will include: Writing, Guided Reading, Technology, Read to Respond, and Word Work. Bluegrass B From Fiction to Fact: Using Nonfiction Text in the Classroom
Using nonfiction books, technology resources, and writing opportunities, we have implemented factual information into our 1st and 3rd grade classrooms to reinforce reading and writing across the curriculum. Whole group, small group, and individual tasks have been used to enhance students’ knowledge of fiction vs. factual information. The students were given a particular topic, then became experts on it and in the end, are able show their knowledge of what they have learned. We have encouraged family involvement in our classrooms this year by incorporating a “Parent Show and Tell,” as well as a Traveling Class Pet with a journal included. Both of these activities encourage a school/family partnership to enhance student learning and involvement in the classroom.

My Literacy Action Plan has been focused on a school-wide, comprehensive approach to literacy, specifically reading comprehension. We took a day of staff development to work through our curriculum guides to highlight when each comprehension module would be used. Based on the research I learned about vocabulary, I decided to do my Literacy Action Plan on using daily word work in my classroom to improve overall vocabulary knowledge. I started by assessing my students to determine their individual spelling needs. I used the Words Their Way spelling inventory to determine what spelling pattern skill each student needs to improve. Through the results of the beginning of the year DSA, data showed that incoming 1st graders were lacking the phonemic awareness needed in order to be successful in phonics and word work by the end of first grade. Data showed that in order to increase student success, 1st grade teachers should implement specific skill focus and sound sort assessments to determine the gaps held by exiting kindergarteners.

One of my long term goals in Kindergarten is to build a strong foundation in phonics, and strong rhyming ability for each student. To do this, students need a lot of exposure to and practice with letter and sound identification, beginning of sounding out words, and introduction to word families. One way to do this is through the use of Big Books. Students will use pointers and sticky notes to underline letters or words depending on the activity. Students may also find sight words or spelling words. Concepts of print will also be taught using big books.

Reading and writing are nearly a reciprocal process. As you improve one, the other nearly always follows. During this school year, writing in classroom journals has allowed students to express their learning and understand on a variety of genres and topics. They also have communicated their weekly learning with parents in their at home journals. Students reflect on the learning targets and skills they acquired in the past week and parents respond over the weekend. Finally, students explored fiction and non-fiction text in almost a 50/50 split during read alouds, small group level readers, and independent reading. Students were able to teach others their learning and share new facts and ideas.

Advocating for Literacy“If not you, then who?”
Oftentimes, we assume advocating is conducted by highly charged political figures and in formal political arenas. However, the term advocate is more basic in its definitions of “(v.) publicly recommend or support; to speak, plead, argue, or write in favor of” and “(n.) a person who pleads on someone else’s behalf; one that defends or maintains a cause or proposal.” These more fundamental meanings suggest grassroots levels of action. Advocacy may be engaged at many levels and for a variety of purposes. In education, it is vital we all put on the mantle of advocating in support of issues that impact our learners and profession. Below are some basic premises that may help guide our thinking as literacy advocates.
WHO:Both the advocate and audience are important to consider.
• Everyone has the capability and right to advocate. Teachers, professional staff, administrators, parents, community members, and policy makers may share support for a cause or position that may impact literacy education.
• Audiences everywhere are numerous. One may share issues in their own classrooms and/or buildings. Schools may need to disseminate information to their business and community leaders to garner support. Parents, educators, and community members may put forth a common voice to share with policy makers in order to impact relevant legislation.
WHY:Educators can get involved at various levels.
• Promote change in your own building• Build understanding of your work among leaders in your district• Inform parents and community members about what it takes to achieve deep learning in classrooms• Influence state and national policies
HOW:Since we all have the right and ability to advocate, how do we go about the process? Following are some general tips that may be applicable to various audiences and purposes.
• Be active and knowledgeableIt is important to know your voice and have it heard. It is also imperative to be well versed in your topic/cause when presenting it to others.
• Be prompt and patientYour attitude and professionalism lead to a positive, lasting impression. Being on time, courteous, and succinct may go a long way in promoting your information. Don’t be discouraged if meetings are rescheduled or if interest and/or results are not immediate. It may take some time to understand the impact of your efforts.
• Be responsiveYou may be called on to answer questions and/or provide more information. Be prepared to do so, even if it requires providing that information at a later time after you have investigated properly. If you do not know an answer, say you will find out and get back to that person.
• Follow up It is always important to have a follow-up plan. This may include sending follow-up notes, providing additional information, or requesting follow-up responses from the interested party.
