Chapter 1: The ProxySG 800 Series

This Installation Guide provides general instructions for installing, configuring, and using the ProxySG. Once you have completed the first-timeconfiguration of the ProxySGand have logged in, you are ready to fullyconfigure the appliance. To do that, you will need to download the Blue CoatProxySG Configuration and Management Guide, available from the Blue CoatWeb site at www.bluecoat.com.

If you log on to the ProxySGusing an Internet browser, you can access thisdocument by clicking the Helpbutton on any screen in the ManagementConsole, the graphical interface of the ProxySG(see Logging on to theProxySGon page 31for information).

You can also visit the Blue Coat Web site for the latest support bulletins andtechnical notes.

This chapter explains how to unpack the ProxySG, install it in an equipmentrack, insert the disk drives, connect the cables, and power on.

Important: Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product

    and included in this manual.

    Unpacking the ProxySG

When you receive and unpack the ProxySG, verify that the package containsthe following items:

Mounting the ProxySGin an Equipment Rack

The ProxySGis designed to fit into a standard telco-style equipment rack. A

side-mounting rail and a rack-mounting bracket are attached to each side ofthe system. The easiest way to mount the system into an equipment rack is toremove the brackets and install them on the equipment rack, then insert theProxySGinto place by sliding the side-mounting rails into the brackets.

Important: You can position the ProxySGso that it is flush with the front

of the rack or protruding forward. Whichever method youchoose, be sure to secure the system to the equipment rack

with at least four screws: use two bracket screws and twoequipment-rack screws for a flush mount, and four bracketscrews for a protruding mount.

1 Remove the left and right rack-mounting brackets from each side of theProxySG, saving the four 6-32 x 3/8 square cone screws for later. Do notremove the side-mounting rails.

4 Position the system as desired:

For a flush-mounted appliance, slide the system until it is flush with

the front of the rack. Make sure that the brackets are fully alignedwith the side-mounting rails. Insert a bracket screw (removed inStep 1) into the empty hole inside each bracket. Insert an equipmentrack screw into the front panel plates on either side of the front of thesystem.

Figure 1-5: Installing a Flush-Mounted System to the Equipment Rack

WARNING! When flush-mounting a ProxySG, always use boththe front-panel plate and the rack-mounting bracketsto secure the system to the rack. The front panel

plates are not weight-bearing components, andusing them to support the system without additional

    support can damage the chassis.

    Insert an equipment-rack

    screw into the front panel

plates on each side of the

    system

    Attaching the Cable Supports

Two cable supports are included with the ProxySG:

The cable management support routes network serial cables to avoidtangling.

The power cord retainer prevents the power cord from being pulled outaccidentally.

Fasten the two cable supports to the back of the system.

1 Position the cable management support at the back of the system on theright; secure it with a 6-32 x 1/4 flathead screw at the side.

    Chapter 2: First-Time Configuration

You need to do a first-time-only configuration to set the basic networkparameters and to ensure that the ProxySGand software are workingproperly.

Once you complete the first-time configuration, refer to the Blue Coat ProxySGConfiguration and Management Guidefor information on how to fully configure

the software. You can download this manual at www.bluecoat.com.

    Overview of First-Time Configuration

There are two ways to do a first-time configuration:

Use the front-panel LCD and buttons.

This is the quickest and easiest way to do a first-time configuration. Use a direct connection between the system and either a standalone serial

terminal or a PC with an available serial (COM) port.

Both of these methods allow you to make the basic network settings requiredto test the connection and functionality. After you complete the first-timeconfiguration, you must log on to the system and use the command-lineinterface (CLI) or Management Console Web interface to fully configure thesystem. First-time configuration is designed only to get the system connectedfor testing purposes.

Chapter 3: Hot-Swapping or Installing Disk Drives

This chapter describes how to remove and install disk drives.

Important: The ProxySGonly supports disk-drive upgrade packages

obtained from Blue Coat Systems, Inc.

    Adding drives

A ProxySGAppliance has slots for four disk drives. If your originalappliance came with less than four disk drives, upgrade options areavailable from Blue Coat.

If you are upgrading your ProxySGby adding (not replacing) disk drives, you can skip to Installing a New Disk Driveon page 41.

    Hot-swapping drives

With the exception of disk one, each of the disk drives can be removedand replaced independently, without powering off the ProxySG.

When you have installed or hot-swapped a new disk drive, the ProxySGrecognizes it, initializes it, and starts using it immediately.

For initial installation of disk drives into a new ProxySG, see Installing theDisk Driveson page 13.

Note: Hot-swapping disk one is not a recommended procedure; youwill lose all configuration settings. If you need to swap disk

one, power down the ProxySG, replace disk one with one ofthe other healthy disks in the ProxySG, and put thereplacement disk in the empty slot. When you power up, the

new disk one copies the existing configuration to the newreplacement disk.

C apte Opt o Ca ds

The Blue Coat ProxySG800 Series comes with a number of expansion slots;there are four option cards available.

    The following cards are available:

    Gigabit Ethernet 1000Base-T (copper-based)

    Gigabit Ethernet 1000B-SX (optical)

Both of the above cards provide one gigabit throughput to the network.

    10/100 Base-T

This is the same 100 megabit card that comes standard with the ProxySG.

The Pass-Through card is a two-port PCI network interface card (NIC). Ithas three separate functions:

Works as a standard NIC to move data in and out of the ProxySG.

Provides a hardware failover mechanism in case of a power loss to orhardware or software failure in the ProxySG. In the event of any of theabove, the Pass-Through card will physically bypass Ethernet trafficaround the ProxySG.

Does away with the need for a router or layer-4 switch when the

ProxySGis configured for transparent proxy by working with layer-4redirection software in the SGOS operating system.

Check configuration information at the terminal emulator for the correctsettings.

You can connect using a terminal, a terminal server, or a PC running aterminal emulator. For detailed instructions on making a direct serialconnection, see Configuring the ProxySG with a Serial Terminal or PConpage 24.

    Cannot Access the Management Console

If the browser fails to connect to the ProxySGsuccessfully, complete thefollowing steps to identify the problem.

Verify the correct IP address and port for the ProxySGin the web browser(the default port is 8082).

Verify the address and port using the CLI through the Serial Console, anddisplay the network configuration. For information on how to do this, seeConfiguring the ProxySG with a Serial Terminal or PCon page 24.

Verify that the workstation is configured and working properly byconnecting to other Web sites. This test may fail if your browser isconfigured to use the ProxySGas a proxy server and there is a problemwith the ProxySG.

If accessing a ProxySGlocated on a remote network (any segment other

than the segment to which the workstation is attached), verify that otherservers on that network are accessible.

Ping the IP address to verify that the ProxySGis accessible from theworkstation. If the ProxySGdoes not respond to the ping, verify that theProxySGis operational (as described earlier).
