Ventura County’s top 10 ideas for summertime fun and excitement

LoCaL brew and wine on Lake CasitasMore and more wine is being made right here in

Ventura County, and the Ojai Wine Festival pro-

vides a showcase for both local vintners and oth-

ers from farther afield. It’s held along the beautiful

shore of Lake Casitas and offers music and other

entertainment as well as fine wine. More than 60

wineries are represented. There are also beer tast-

ings from more than a dozen breweries. Free boat

rides on the lake are another relaxing aspect of the

day. It’s planned for Sunday, June 10. Visit www.

ojaiwinefestival.com.

the wonderfuL worLd of disneyThe Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi

Valley always features fascinating historical ex-

hibits like the Air Force One 707 that flew Reagan

and other presidents on historic journeys across

the globe, but visitors will have an extra opportu-

nity to learn about Reagan’s friendship with Walt

Disney. The official Disney Fan Club presents an

exhibition of more than 500 iconic props, cos-

tumes and artifacts from the Walt Disney Archives

collected over nine decades. Reagan was a co-

host for television coverage of the 1955 open-

ing of Disneyland, and after leaving office, offici-

ated over its 35th anniversary, declaring it “One

of America’s national treasures.” The exhibition

called D23 Presents Treasures of the Walt Disney

Archives opens on July 6 and runs through next

April. Visit www.reaganfoundation.com.

fuLL of hot airOne of California’s largest hot-air balloon events

lifts off in Santa Paula July 27 and 28. Tethered

rides will be offered at the Citrus Classic Balloon

Festival, but just seeing the colorful balloons soar-

an idyllic location to spend the

summer that it’s easy to let it

slide right past lounging on the beach

or sipping tropical cocktails decorated

with colorful umbrellas. But too much

relaxation might mean missing out on

some of the fantastic summertime events

involving adventure, excitement and

education. From up-close looks at soaring

hot air balloons and ocean wildlife, to

performances by talented musicians,

summertime activities in Ventura County

offer diversions of all kinds.

the mountains of the Los Padres Na-

tional Forest is a treat. The event also

features outdoor dining, live music,

beer and wine tasting, a car show and

arts and crafts vendors. Visit www.cit-

rusclassicballoons.com.

For the love oF musicThe rare two-story Monterey-style

adobe built by Don Raymundo Olivas

back in the 1840s is one of Ventura’s

most historically significant buildings,

and the large interior courtyard was

known as the site of huge gatherings

before California was even part of the

United States. The festive spirit lives

on during the popular Music Under

the Stars series held each summer.

There’s a feeling of magic in the air as

music lovers listen and dance to a va-

riety of genres under the shining moon

and swaying trees with the adobe as

a backdrop. Many people bring picnic

dinners, or a delicious catered hot buf-

fet can be ordered in advance. Some

acts this year include Latin jazz with the

Estrada Brothers on Aug. 18 and the

always-popular zydeco performer Lisa

Hailey on Sept. 8. The concerts are on

Saturdays from July 14 through Sept. 8.

It’s smart to reserve tickets in advance.

Visit www.cityofventura.net/mus.

Fair Food and FunSummer’s biggest event includes

something for everyone, from thrill

rides and art exhibits to concerts by

famous performers. Rockers Joan Jett

and the Blackhearts, Brett Michaels of

Poison fame, and country star Martina

McBride are among the performers

who will grace the Grandstand Arena.

Motorsports and rodeo are also fea-

tured there. This year marks the debut

of the new 38,000-square-foot Judge

William P. Clark Livestock Center, re-

placing animal pens that were about

75 years old. The open-air building

will benefit visitors, exhibitors and

the animals. The Ventura County Fair

is set to run Aug. 1 through 12. Visit

www.venturacountyfair.org.

up in the skyAn air show at Camarillo’s airport, and

special events at Santa Paula’s offer

entertainment and aeronautical his-

tory. The Aviation Museum at the Santa

Paula Airport is open on the first Sun-

day of each month. Hangars showcase

historic and experimental airplanes that

take people back to the early days of

flight. There are also antique cars and

motorcycles on display. Another excit-

ing aviation event will take flight on Aug.

18 and 19, the Wings Over Camarillo air

show. A highlight this year will be the

reunion of a legendary unit of airplanes

called the Checkertails that dominated

the Mediterranean theater of combat

during World War II. Visit www.wing-

make a splashThe Water Adventure at Lake Casitas is

a great place to cool off on a hot day,

especially since swimming in the lake

is not allowed. There’s a colorful water

playground with squirting fountains for

young kids. An impressive lazy river

feature is fun and relaxing for adults as

terfall. There are also a snack bar and

lounge chairs to lie out on for a relaxing

sunbath. Rental motorboats for fi shing

and sightseeing are also available at

the Lake Casitas Recreation Area. Visit

THAR SHE BLOWS! The largest summertime visitors to Ventu-

ra County are blue whales. In fact, they’re

the biggest mammals on the face of the

planet. Island Packers Cruises offers

blue whale watching excursions during

the summer months, while other marine

mammal species like humpback whales

and dolphins are frequently spotted.

Some of Island Packers other fun and

exciting offerings include half-day island

wildlife cruises around Anacapa Island,

and coastal sailing adventures and island

cruises aboard the 137-foot-long, tall

sailing ship Bill of Rights. They also pro-

vide regularly scheduled transportation

to all the islands in Channel Islands Na-

tional Park for hikers, beachcombers and

campers. Visit www.islandpackers.com.

TAKE A HIKEThe Los Padres Forest Association has

done a great job refurbishing the Wheel-

er Gorge Visitor Center on Highway 33,

where summertime programs delight

and educate. The Visitor Center now

contains numerous maps, artifacts and

exhibits about forest animals. Feeders

for hovering hummingbirds and scam-

pering blue jays are a sight to behold. It’s

only eight miles from Ojai but feels like

it’s a world away. In addition to providing

information for people headed deeper

into the forest, there are educational pro-

grams scheduled every weekend during

the summer. Some of the programs in-

clude Reptiles From Around the World,

Birds of Prey and Trees Are Tremendous.

Wheeler Gorge is also a nice place to

camp next to a shady creek, and it’s

worth hiking the nature trail with informa-

tive signs about forest plants. Visit www.

lpforest.org/wheeler.

AT HOME ON THE FARMVentura County is home to amazing

agricultural resources and some grow-

ers help educate customers about their

products, such as McGrath Family

Farm and Underwood Family Farms.

The Underwood operations in Somis

and Moorpark have goat ladders where

the daring critters delight visitors.

The McGrath farm in Camarillo offers

tours and a chance to pick your own

produce. In addition to learning about

agriculture, they’re also great places to

buy some farm-fresh produce for sum-

mer salads and other healthy treats.
