Seven Grandfathers Sacred Teachings Interdisciplinary Arts An Eco-Jus<ce and Wellness Indigenous Arts Educa<on Project with Esther Osche (Ojibwa storyteller) + Allycia Uccello + Charmaine Lurch (visual ar<sts) Grades 4 to 6 The First Na,ons, Mé,s and Inuit peoples of North America were given seven sacred Teachings of the Seven Sacred Grandfathers that form the founda,on of their spirituality. The tradi, onal concepts of respect and sharing that form the founda,on of the Aboriginal way of life are built around these teachings. Each teaching honours one of the basic virtues to a full and healthy life. All other feelings, thoughts and ac,ons are derived from these teachings. Each Scared Teaching is represented by an animal because animals live close to the land and therefore serve to remind us of our connec,on to nature and respect for all things. Indigenous peoples spent thousands of years evolving with these close connec, ons. Seven Grandfathers Sacred Teachings blends Ojibwa storytelling with narra,ve pain, ngs. Storyteller is Esther Osche. Visual ar,sts are Charmaine Lurch and Allycia Uccello. Ideal for junior grades but may be adapted for primaries. Learning Outcomes Awareness of Canada’s First Na,ons beliefs on humanity and our interconnectedness through storytelling and group visual art installa,on Explore seven sacred teachings in allegory (giN of animal creatures) that begin with the Eagle (love) and also discern truth from honesty and include humility, wisdom, respect and courage Program supports a posi,ve psychology model of teaching through the arts with outcomes designed to build these virtues in us all understanding that this leads to self-understanding, love for humanity, interdependence and social intelligence
