Setting New Standards
In 2008, we not only celebrated the 75th anniversary of thesigning of the historic concession agreement between theSaudi government and Standard Oil of California that occurredon May 29, 1933, but we were also busy setting new standardsin many areas throughout the company. For instance:
5
A patent was issued in 2008 for a real-time earthmodel for collaborative geosteering, and another fora comprehensive reporting and control matrix for themanagement of our pipeline system.
We conducted the first successful laboratorydemonstration of the injection of nano-particles intoreservoir rocks, and the recovery of the nano-particlesat rates comparable to field conditions and at lowconcentration. For the reservoir robots (Resbots)concept, EXPEC ARC won the prestigious New HorizonsIdea Award at the 2008 World Oil Awards.
6
On November 1, 2008, the company completed its firstgiga-cell (1 billion cells) reservoir simulation run. Theachievement was made using GigaPOWERS, the next-generation parallel reservoir simulator developed bySaudi Aramco.
We successfully completed the first casing-while-drillingproject in Saudi Arabia in 2008, and we installed ourfirst nonmetallic piping in two sour-crude oil pipelinesthat connect ‘Ain Dar GOSPs with Abqaiq Plants.
Long-term tests in whole crude oil desulfurizationbegan in early 2008. And we have deployed bacteriaoperationally as part of a Nitrate Treatment in theHawtah oil field, thereby controlling a sulfide problemin an environmentally friendly fashion.
In 2008, two offshore nonassociated gas fields (Rabiband Arabiyah) and one oil field (Niyashin) were dis-covered.
We continued to set new standards by moving forward with thelargest capital expansion program in our history. In 2008, wemade significant progress on the following oil-production capacityincrements:
The Khurais development will add 1.2 million barrelsper day (bpd) of Arabian Light crude-oil production
7
capacity and also dehydrate 320 million standard cubicfeet per day (scfd) of gas and produce 80,000 bpd ofNGL. Khurais is the largest integrated oil project incompany history.
The Khursaniyah facilities are designed to process andstabilize 500,000 bpd of Arabian Light crude oil blendfrom the Abu Hadriya, Fadhili and Khursaniyah fields.
The Shaybah expansion will increase production capacityat Shaybah from 500,000 bpd to 750,000 bpd of ArabianExtra Light crude oil — expanding one of the company’smost unique and iconic projects.
D
The Nuayyim crude-oil increment will use the state-of-the-art Intelligent Field approach to streamlinereservoir management processes and facilitate real-time decision making. The increment will have thecapacity to produce 100,000 bpd of sweet ArabianSuper Light crude oil.
The offshore Manifa project will add 900,000 bpd ofArabian Heavy crude oil production capacity, 90 millionscfd of associated gas and 65,000 bpd of condensate. The project’s unusually shallow offshore site requiressignificant environmental-protection measures.
