•Explain: "One person at a time will select a card. Without stating the name of the food, she will use one-word descriptions until someone guesses the foods."

•Show the video.•Pause as directed and talk about the situations.

8aIntroduce the Bible Story (4 minutes)

Pull It Together5 pieces of pita bread, 2 pieces of broiled fish, plate•Prepare and post an allergy chart listing foods. •Place the bread and fish on the plate.

•Say: "Imagine 5,000 extra men, not counting the women and children, come to worship at our church. Also imagine the people are hungry when they arrive. What would our church do?"

•Display the bread and fish.•Ask: "Would this food feed all of the people?"•Say: "Over 5,000 people came to hear Jesus

teach. Let's see what Jesus did with this amount of food."

9aTell the Bible Story (4 minutes)

Pull It Together10 cans of food, tape, scissors•Print "Labels" (CD). Cut apart. Attach to food cans.

Teacher Tips•Group children into 10 groups (1 per can).•Give groups more than 1 can if you have a smaller

group of children.

•Say: "Last week we learned Jesus was able to perform miracles because He is God's Son. Does anyone remember what a miracle is?"

•Select a volunteer to respond.•Say: "A miracle is 'an unusual event that only

God can cause to happen.' Let's learn about another miracle Jesus performed."

•Distribute cans of food.•Say: "Part of the Bible story is printed on each

label. Listen to the Bible story to discover in what order the events on the cans take place."

•Open your Bible to John 6. •Tell the Bible story in your own words.

A Miracle of FoodBased on John 6:1-13

(Can 1) Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee. A huge crowd followed Him because they saw how He had healed people.

(Can 2) Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with His disciples.

(Can 3) Jesus saw the people coming toward Him. He asked Philip, "Where can we buy food to feed these people?" Jesus knew what He was going to do, but He wanted to test Philip.

(Can 4) Philip said, "Two hundred denarii (more than a half a year's pay) would not buy enough bread to feed all of these people just a little."

Week of February 10, 2013

(Can 5) Andrew, another disciple, said, "Here is a boy with his lunch. He has five loaves of barley bread and two fish. That is not enough food to feed all of these people."

(Can 6) Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down. The people obeyed. About 5,000 men were in the crowd (not counting the women and children).

(Can 7) Jesus took the bread, thanked God, and served it to the people. Then Jesus did the same thing with the fish. The people ate as much as they wanted.

(Can 8) After the people finished eating, Jesus told His disciples to collect the leftovers. The disciples collected 12 baskets full of bread.

(Can 9) The people were amazed at the miracle. They said, "This Man really is the Prophet sent to save the world."

(Can 10) Jesus knew the people were about to force Him to become their king, so He left the people and went to a mountain by Himself.

•Invite two children to read aloud their labels and place the cans in the correct order.

•Direct other children to read aloud additional labels and place in order.

•Call attention to the teaching picture. •Ask: "What can we learn from this story?"•Say: "We can learn Jesus was able to perform

miracles because He is God's Son. We can trust God to provide for our needs."

•Distribute pencils.•Complete "Needs or Wants?"•Say: "Needs are things we must have to live.

Wants are things we would like to have, but we can live without."

12aLearn the Key Bible Verse (6 minutes)

Pull It TogetherMarker, tape•Print "Needs" (CD). Copy 1 card for every 2 words

of Philippians 4:19. •Write 1-2 words of Philippians 4:19 on each card

(including the reference). Tape around the room.

•Say: "Many times we think food is our major need, but God knows we need more than food. Around the room are several other items we need to survive. Bring the items to me."

•Assist as needed.•Say: "Open your Bible to Philippians 4:19."•Select a volunteer to read aloud the verse.•Continue: "Let's arrange these pictures in order

of our need."•Arrange the items in order of need.•Rearrange items to put the verse in order.•Guide the children to read the verse as a group.•Apply the verse to the children's lives.

13 Play "ABC of Needs" (6 minutes)

behind the construction paper. •Display the mat.

•Form four groups. •Say: "Let's review what we learned today. I'll ask

your group a question. If you answer correctly, you may remove a construction paper sheet from the mat. Inside some of the pockets are 'You Found the Food' cards. The object of the game is to locate as many of the cards as possible."

Worship Through Dramatic PlayServing at a Restaurant•Ask: "What do you like to eat for lunch? What would you do if one of

your friends forgot his lunch? Would you share yours with him? Would you be willing to share your lunch if everyone in your school was hungry and all you had was your lunch? Does feeding that many people seem impossible?"

•Say: "Nothing is impossible with God. Jesus took one little boy's lunch and fed over 5,000 people." Review the Bible story.

•Say: "Most restaurants have waiters or waitresses who bring us our food. Let's see how well you would work as a waiter or waitress."

•Form two teams. Display "Foods" cards faceup on the table.•Say: "Your team members will pretend to be waiters and waitresses. I will

tell you an item I would like to order. The first person on your team will run to your team's cards, locate the correct item, place it on a plate, and return it to me. When you place the plate in front of me, say, 'Your order is served.' The first team to serve me the correct item earns a point."

•Assign each team a set of cards.•Call out various items, varying from one to three items at a time.•Ask: "Was it easy to be a waiter or waitress? Why?"•Say: "Waiters and waitresses work to meet the needs of people. Jesus met

the needs of people by feeding them with the little boy's lunch. We can trust God to meet our needs."

You and the person describing the food will race to the can of food. The first person to the can will return to the group. The other person will describe the next food."

Lunch Box1. Cut the craft foam into 1 8-by-18-inch rectangle and

2 4-by-4-inch squares. Cut 2 24-inch lengths of cording.

2. Punch holes around three edges of the 4-by-4 inch squares, approximately ½ inch apart.

3. Place both squares (side without holes lining up on the 8-inch side) at one of the 8 inch sides.

4. Mark and punch holes on outer 18-inch sides only.

5. Repeat on opposite side.

6. Secure cording at one end. Lace the pieces together. Do not pull the cording too tight (craft foam will tear). Do not cut cording.

7. Repeat on the opposite side.

8. Fold and repeat steps 4-6 for the remaining sides.

9. Secure ends. Trim excess cording.

10. Crease bottom edges.

11. Fold and crease top edges over the box.

12. Attach Velcro® strips.

13. Decorate the box.

Option: Have excess cording? Punch holes in the top of the lunch box and make a handle.

Since the beginning of animal crackers, 37 different animals have been included. The current animals include: tiger, cougar, camel, rhinoceros, kangaroo, hippopotamus,

bison, lion, hyena, zebra, elephant, sheep, bear, gorilla, monkey, polar bear, seal, and giraffe.

In Japan, the average person eats 347 eggs a year.

The first soup was made of hippopotamus. Early archeological evidence says the soup dates back to 6,000 BC.

The popsicle was invented by an 11-year-old who kept it a secret for 18 years.

Ketchup is found in 97% of the kitchens in the United States. Ketchup was invented in Indonesian and Asian cultures. Henry J. Heinz began making ketchup in 1876.

The first lollipop was most likely created by cave people over thousands of years ago. The cave people stuck sticks into beehives to collect all of the honey.

In the 1600s, the English boiled sugar to make candy treats. They put sticks in them to make them easier to eat. The term lollipop means "tongue slap" because the word lolly in

Northern England means "tongue."

The Belgian people claim they invented french fries in the late 1700s. The people usually ate small fried fish, but when the river froze they could not catch fish,

so they sliced potatoes and fried them. At first the potatoes were cut into fish shapes.

Some people believe that macaroni-shaped pasta began in China and was taken to Italy by Marco Polo. By the 1700s macaroni and cheese was popular throughout Europe and in American colonies.

World War II helped make macaroni and cheese more popular because not many people had meat, and milk was in short supply. Macaroni and cheese was also easy to cook.

Ceviche is raw fish soaked overnight in citrus juice. Ceviche is eaten in coastal towns in Mexico.

Grasshoppers are fried in oil and eaten in Africa and Asia. Many people believe grasshoppers are good for you.
