Principles of integration

• Clarify the national and district's priorities • Consensus among stakeholders with respect to their NTD goals • Integration is not a prescribed formula – it is an attitude • An integrated approach allows districts with multiple diseases

to optimise use of available resources and minimise the need of special/vertical/separate drug distribution activities

• Efficiencies demonstrated through integration • Reduced costs

• Training , Supervision, Reporting • Improves efficiency and effectiveness

• Logistics, M&E (surveys, impact assessments etc) • Increased geographic coverage

Challenges in integration process

• Combining many disease-specific programs may be complicated by organizational structures, financial management systems and technical reporting pathways

• Different standards of performance & operations between programmes

• Territorialism and perceptions of hostile take-over • Transparency in information sharing, esp. budget • Respecting timelines of the various NTD programme activities • Over-load of HWs with excessive tasks in impossible time-

frames • Limited human resources and technical capacity will dictate the

pace in the early rounds to national scale-up

Benefits of integration (1)

1. Cost-effectiveness by pooling limited resources 2. Sharing of training sessions and facilities 3. Pooling of advocacy tools 4. Pooling of social mobilization: TV/radio announcements 5. Utilization of common registers and standard M&E tools 6. Sharing of operational costs and facilities: equipment 7. Sharing of logistics: vehicles, transportation expenses, fuel 8. ↑ impact on poverty ↓and disease burden as interventions are

delivered as a package with synergistic effect and improved outcomes

9. Improved compliance in endemic communities as they will be less frequently called upon to participate / cooperate

Benefits of Integration (2)

10. Broader knowledge of multiple disease control for health workers (HWs)

11. Increased ownership of the integrated NTDP 12. Better cooperation between sectors, ministries (health, education,

local government) and local donors 13. Optimization of the use of expertise: social scientists,

epidemiologists, entomologists, parasitologists as each will serve >1 programme

14. Improved supervision of community drug distributors (CDDs) and school teachers with fewer resources

15. Strong and consolidated partnership and consensus for control/ elimination of NTDs
