As repúblicas são geridas pelos próp-rios comensais (estudantes). The studentʼs residences are owned by the University and you can stay in a room share with another student, kitchen and other facilities. Religious restrictions onthe consumption of pork

Traditional Meals in Portugal may contain pieces of swine (pig/pork/hog) includ-ing things not imaginable like soup and fry things. Normally a soup like "Caldo Verde" [Green Soup] have a tiny piece of spicy sausage [pork] and fry potatoes could be fried in pig lard (Many restaurants use oil, but some places uses pig lard to give flavor). So: Chouriço, Morcela, Alheira, Carne de Porco a Alente-jana, Caldo Verde, Leitão, and many dishes have pig meat, if you have restric-tions, the best is avoid this food.

Academic Association

University of Coimbra's Academic Association is the biggest organization of its kind in Europe. AAC has a long history and unmatched reputation in student sports, cultural activities, and political activ-ism. With a long history of struggle against unpopular state policies, forming notable politicians and intellectuals along the way, it also harbours a very dynamic associative life. The Coimbra Academic Association (Portuguese: Associação Académica de Coimbra (AAC)) is the studentʼs union of the University of Coimbra (UC). Founded in Coimbra on November 3, 1887, it is the oldest studentʼs union in Portugal. It is also the biggest Portuguese studentʼs union belonging to an independent institution, since it represents all the students of its university, who gain automatic membership into the AAC as students of the University of Coimbra, including Erasmus students. In addition to several departments dedicated to culture and student life, AAC has several sportʼs departments based in Coimbra. All teams and athletes of the AAC sports departments bear the same name and logo with black uniforms. This is one of the largest sports clubs of Portugal. The Associação Académica de Coimbra - O.A.F. (its autonomous professional football club) is one of its better known sports clubs across Portugal due to a regular presence on the Portuguese Football Championship and the popularity of football in the country. In rugby (Portuguese Rugby Union Championship), volleyball (Portuguese Volleyball Cham-pionship) and basketball (Portuguese Basketball League (LCB)) competitions, AAC is also represented at the highest level, as well as in several olympic disciplines. The chess team is the current Portuguese champion. The AAC is governed by a "D.G. - Direcção Geral" (Directorate-General, the main board) made up entirely of students of the University of Coimbra; yearly elections take place to name the members of this board, any student can sign up to be a candidate. All the students of UC are entitled to vote for the AAC board. Since the late nineties inside the AAC structure have been created several local student unions, representing courses, departments or sometimes faculties. Known as “Núcleos” (Portuguese for nucleus), these semi-independent unions have their own elected internal organs. All of them represent a major role in the AAC political, cultural, sportive and social life. In 2008 the AAC comprehended 25 of such unions, of which NEFLUC (Students union of the Faculty of Letters) is the biggest, representing nearly 3000 students. The main building of the Coimbra's Academic Association was inaugurated in 1961 and holds the offices of many sports clubs (secções desportivas) and arts sections (secções culturais). There are also rehearsal halls, academic services, extensive indoor gar-dens, a theatre-cinema with approximately 1,000 seats (Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente), and a café–restaurant where many students meet up and enjoy a wide selection of foods. AAC is the umbrella organization for a number of autonomous entities, the organismos autónomos. What thing you can do? The AAC cultural sections include: Astronomy, Cinematography, Ecological Group, Fado, Gastronomy, Human rights, Informatics, Journalism, Philately, Portuguese language and culture divulgation, Radio, Student SOS - Phone line to support and help students with any kind of personal problems, Television, Writing and Reading and Yoga. The AAC desportive sections you ʻll find: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Body building, Boxing, Canoeing, Chess, Com-petitive swimming, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Judo, Karate, Motorized sports, Nautical sports, Radio-controlled car, Rink hockey, Rugby, Roller skating, Sport fishing, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling..

A Associação Académica de Coimbra, fundada a 3 de Novembro de 1887, é a mais antiga asso-ciação de estudantes de Portugal. Representa os cerca de 20 000 estudantes da Universidade de Coimbra, que são automaticamente considerados seus sócios quando se encontrem inscritos nesta universidade.

A AAC alberga uma série de Secções Culturais e Desportivas bem como os Núcleos de estudantes. Entre as Secções Culturais pontificam, o Centro de Estudos Cinematográficos (CEC) que realiza anu-almente o Festival "Caminhos do Cinema Português", a Secção de Escrita e Lritura, A Secção de Foto-grafia, a Rádio Universidade de Coimbra (RUC), a Secção de Jornalismo (que edita o jornal universi-tário "A Cabra"), a Televisão da Associação Académica de Coimbra, a Secção de Fado, o Grupo de Folclore e Etnografia (GEFAC) e os grupos de teatro (TEUC e CITAC). As Secções Desportivas abrangem um vasto leque de desportos, tais como o hóquei em patins, futebol, andebol, basquete-bol, rugby, canoagem, natação, voleibol, ténis, artes marciais e xadrez, entre outros. A "Académica" é assim o "clube" mais eclético do pais, uma vez que "pratica" o maior número de modalidades. Os Núcleos de estudantes encontram-se repartidos pelas várias Faculdades ou Departamentos da Universidade, e ajudam a DG a actuar em prol de todos os estudantes que representam, uma vez que estes exercem um contacto mais directo com as várias realidades.

A AAC é dirigida pela Direcção Geral (DG), composta por estudantes, e eleita anualmente entre novembro e dezembro em eleições abertas a todos os sócios, tanto estudantes como os sócios secci-onistas. À DG compete a administração da AAC bem como a representação política dos estudantes. Em termos políticos, é ainda de referir a importância das Assembleias Magnas, assembleias sobr-etudo de discussão da política da Academia, abertas a todos os sócios, cujas decisões têm de ser obrigatoriamente cumpridas, independentemente da opinião da DG. O actual edifício da AAC foi inaugurado em 1961 e alberga praticamente todas as secções da AAC, estando integrado num quar-teirão que inclui ainda uma sala de espectáculos (Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente) e um complexo de cantinas.
