My short vacation to Ohio coincided with the annual Preble County Pork Festival. The event was more like a fair with lots of vendors selling their wares. There was a big parade with several marching bands, along with the requisite fire trucks, and a garbage truck. Surprised, I asked about it. Apparently their garbage service is a major sponsor of the annual event. I spotted the service in at least four counties. The best part of the trip (aside from meeting up with my Aussie cousin, whom I havent seen since she was 9) was actually visiting the bank my grandfather was an instrumental part of. It was turned into a pizza parlor after a new bank was built down the street. But this 100 year+ old building was the building that made headlines in the local newspapers when it was robbed. Mom subscribed to the Ohio paper for years when I was growing up, so of course when Grandfather was robbed at gunpoint, it made the news and mom had a copy. I dont recall the entire story, but pretty sure he saved the day. In 1918, he was part of the health department, and was responsible for making people stay home during the flu epidemic. He also saved the day in the depression as well, when he told everyone to just go home when the stock market crashed. They believed in him and did as he asked. The bank stood strong. FOREST WORKSHOP Southwestern Oregon C.C. GOLD BEACH, OR – Oregon is famous for its forests and large conifers. Our trees are in demand! Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering a workshop, What is a Forest?Learn about how people use the forests for a multitude of products as well as recreation. Intact forests provide crucial ecosystem functions such as water filtration, erosion prevention and wildlife habitat. A walk through the forest is a great way to get your greentime: valuable time outside to recharge and relax. The focus of this class is the natural forest ecosystem and how it functions. Trees, water, shrubs, wildlife, wood debris, soil microorganisms, (dont forget the fungus!) soil, and so much more all interconnect to form a sustainable forest. This workshop includes a lecture and field trip. The lecture is scheduled for Friday, October 7 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Southwesterns Gold Beach Center (on the fairgrounds). Discussion will focus on how past events shape the forests we see today. Saturday morning, October 8, the class will take a field trip to visit different forest types located near Gold Beach. The class will leave the Gold Beach Center at 8:00 a.m. returning from the field trip around 1:00 p.m. Cost of the workshop is $35. Fronted by

the popular Portland folk-country songstress Mary Rondthaler, the five-piece band will perform two 45 minute sets featuring the songs of country music legend Loretta Lynn. Also known as the Coal Miner’s Daughter, Loretta wrote many of her own songs and has been dubbed the Queen of Country Music throughout her five decade career. In 1972, she was the first woman to be nominated and named Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association. Rondthaler has spent many years honing her craft around the Portland music scene. She has performed and recorded with George Chudacoff, Succotash, The Sagebrush Sisters and The Rocky Butte Wranglers. She can be seen regularly singing country and western songs with the Wranglers at nightclubs around the Northwest, as well as with The Sagebrush Sisters, a three-piece cowgirl swing band. Mary is well known for her knack of picking great unknown songs from the repertoires of many legendary country music artists. The band features three graduates of Oregon State who studied music under Professor Neal Grandstaff, widely known for his lifelong contribution to music performance

and education. They are Justin Schepige on bass, Tommy Brownson on drums and Erik Crew on lead guitar. Joining them on pedal steel guitar will be veteran Nashville touring pro and session player Gary Thorsen, who toured with Loretta’s twin daughters, The Lynns. He has worked for many other country music greats, including Tanya Tucker. Gary is locally known for his inspiring work in the musical show Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes? and with the Opry West at The Little Theater by The Bay in North Bend. The entourage is scheduled to perform at several of the Oregon Coast’s most endearing theaters. All Friday or Saturday night shows are at 7:00 pm and Sunday shows are a 2:00 PM matinee. Tickets are available at local ticket outlets and at www.hey-loretta.com/tickets. A portion of all proceeds will benefit the Children’s Theater in Florence Oregon. Hey Loretta! Will be at the Sprague Theatre in Bandon, OR - October 7th, 8th and 9th; Dori Randall Performing Arts Center in Brookings, OR - October 14th; and the Class Act Theatre in Florence October 21st, 22nd and 23rd

SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS PORT ORFORD/LANGLOIS, OR—On Monday, September 19th, the District 2CJ School Board met for their regularly scheduled meeting. Gordon Clay from Brookings (in the public input portion of the meeting) spoke to the board about Suicide and Bully Prevention. Mr. Clay is the founder of “The Citizens Who Care” organization. September is Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month. He handed out buttons and cards that have the number 741741, which is the texting number people should use if they struggling or considering suicide. Superintendent Steve Perkins reviewed the lead testing results for both Driftwood Elementary (DWS) and Pacific High School (PHS). Seventeen (17) faucets/sinks had lead levels above the state limit.

Sixteen (16) of those samples were from PHS and one (1) from DWS. Twelve (12) of the seventeen (17) samples were very close to the acceptable lead level, so they have since been retested. The original testing was done in the first week of August. Results from the re-testing should be available by the first of October. If the retests do not result in acceptable lead levels, faucets/sinks could need to be replaced. Mr. Perkins also reviewed the Healthy and Safe School Report. School Districts in the state of Oregon have until January 1, 2021 to file a report. This report includes lead testing, radon testing, Indoor Air Quality, Ambient Air Quality, and Toxic Exposure to Hazardous Waste Sites. The board agreed to a cooperative agreement with Coquille School District for girls’ softball, which

was presented by Krista Nieraeth, PHS Principal. This will allow any girl that attends PHS to play softball at Coquille if they so choose. We currently have five PHS boys playing football in Coquille. The board also approved the licensed staff pay schedule for the 2016-17 school year. October’s board meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 17th @ 4:00 pm. MEDICARE COUNSELING BANDON, OR– The enrollment period for 2017 health insurance starts soon.
