Conservatory of Dance is producing "The Nutcracker, A Modern Ballet." The show features the original choreography and costuming of Sky-Marie McDonald and is comprised of ballet, hip-hop and modern dance. Performances are by the students of the Wild Rivers Conservatory of Dance and invited guest artists. The show builds on the existing winter holiday traditions in Brookings: Nature's Coastal Holiday (the well established Azalea Park Lighting project), The Main Street lighting project, now in it's third year, and the showing of The Polar Express. Now, we are adding the magic of The Nutcracker, creating a holiday wonderland just in time for Christmas. December 17 and December 18 at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM each day. Brookings Elks Lodge, 800 Elk Dr., Brookings, OR 97415. $15 General Admission; $25 Cabaret Seating Tickets are available at Wright's Custom Framing in Brookings, online at http://brookingsnutcracker2016.bpt.me/ and at the door. The Wild Rivers Coast Foundation for Dance is a new Oregon 501(c)3 non-profit corporation working to enhance dance education on the Wild Rivers Coast. We seek to create a regional ballet, produce dance performances, and provide for dance scholarships. CHRISTMAS EVE ANDLE LIGHTING

CURRY HEALTH BOARD MEETS The Curry Health District Board of Directors will hold their regular monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. on

Wednesday, December 14, 2016 in the conference room at the Pacific Reef Resort, 29362 Ellensburg Avenue in Gold Beach, OR. CHRISTMAS AT CAPE BLANCO Holiday splendor will be presented at the 28th annual Christmas opening of the historic Hughes House near Port Orford. On December 17, 18, 23, 24 and 26, visitors will be treated to a very special viewing of the Victorian farmhouse built by pioneers Patrick and Jane Hughes. The 3,000 square foot, 11-room ranch home, constructed of old growth Port Orford cedar, will be decorated by various community organizations. The theme this year is simply "Dairy Farm Christmas". The house was constructed in 1898 during the Victorian era (1837 to 1901). The matriarch Jane Hughes lived there until she died in 1923. Homemade cookies and hot-spiced cider will be available and the gift shop will be open. Entry to the Hughes House is by donation. Weather permitting, Cape Blanco Lighthouse, two miles up the road, will be open for tours as well. The lantern room (tower) will be open for a fee of $2/person (16 years and older). Open hours for both the Hughes House and Cape Blanco Lighthouse are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “THE NUTCRACKER, A MODERN BALLET” BROOKINGS, OR--The Wild Rivers Coast Foundation for Dance in partnership with the Wild Rivers

interpretation, and song. Candles will be lit for the prophets, Joseph and Mary, the shepherds and angels, the wise men and guiding star, and the Christ child in the manger. The symbolism and meaning of these characters in our lives will be shared. Participants will also be lighting individual candles to remind them of the light that is born in them during this special season and that each one of us is a "light of the world." Regular Sunday services will be held on Christmas Day at 11 AM. Unity of Bandon is located one mile south of 11th Street on Hwy 101. Call 541-347-4696 for more information. ROTARY NEWS PEACEFUL SCHOOLS: With great excitement and enthusiasm, the Rotary Peaceful Schools Program was launched at Driftwood Elementary School in Port Orford. High School students from Pacific High School Leadership Class conducted lessons with 1st graders that focused on conflict resolution and perspective. The high school leaders read the book "Hey Little Ant" by Phillip M. Hoose, which delves into the subject of looking at a situation from someone else's point of view. A budding relationship between teenagers and 6-year-olds was established and all are looking forward to the next session. GIVING TREE: This year’s Giving Tree was successful thanks to all the Community Angels that shopped, or donated funds for us to shop. The families deeply appreciated your generosity you helped. Additionally, Operation Christmas Stockings was implemented to fill in for the loss of Children’s

Christmas Bazaar. This one year fill-in project was supported by St. John’s Catholic Church, Port Orford Christian Center, Zion Church, and several generous private benefactors. The project allowed for an additional gift bag for each child. Our Giving Tree Team would like to thank Rogue Credit Union, Umpqua Bank, and Gold Beach Lumber for their assistance with the Giving Tree program, without them we could not have done it! Special thanks to our Chief Elf, Angie MacFarlane for guiding the Christmas Sleigh full of gifts at the last minute. PORT INVESTS IN COLLEGE’S HEALTH & SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY BUILDING COOS BAY, OR – The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay has committed $25,000 toward Southwestern Oregon Community College’s effort to build a new Health & Science Technology Building on the Coos Bay campus. “It’s imperative our communities

on the south Oregon coast have a workforce trained and educated to take on the specialized science and health care jobs of today and the future,” said Port CEO John Burns, announcing the port’s investment in the project. The project fits with the Port’s mission to promote a sustainable healthy economy for southwest Oregon and ultimately the state. It also ensures the college remains competitive and viable, which is critical to a rural community in a global economy. “When companies look to expand existing operations or make new investment in a community, they choose to do business in an area with a thriving college and excellent medical care,” Burns said. “This project ensures our region will provide both.” The Port investment will be pooled with other community funds contributed toward the $16 million construction of the 48,000 sq. ft. building. It will feature modern classrooms, lecture halls and specialized science and collaborative health care labs for

students pursuing high-skill training for local jobs. It also will allow the college to add new programs industry needs, serve an additional 160 science students per year and expand the nursing degree program from 56 to 80 students. “The community enthusiasm for this facility to evolve our college into a new era of technology and high-skill training in science, nursing and allied health care programs is unprecedented – and inspiring,” said college President Dr. Patty Scott. “We are very pleased to have the Port of Coos Bay as a partner in this project.” The Health & Science Technology Building also will benefit the region’s high school students in Health Career Pathways and dual-enrollment programs, along with traditional recent high school graduates and existing workers who want to improve their skills and marketability.
