    Does Bank Indonesia forbid the use of Virtual Currency?

    The central bank, Bank Indonesia, does not necessarily prohibit the use of virtual currency within

    the country, but they do forbid fully-licensed PJSP to process payment transaction using virtual

    currency. Virtual currency is not a legal method of payment in Indonesia and Bank Indonesia is

    not and will not be held responsible for the risks arising from the use of virtual currency within the

    society.

    TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia menegaskan bitcoin BUKAN alat pembayaran. Direktur Eksekutif

    Kepala Departemen Kebijakan Sistem Pembayaran Bank Indonesia (BI) Eny V. Panggabean mengatakan, sebagai bank sentral, pihaknya dengan tegas melarang penggunaan bitcoin sebagai

    alat pembayaran.

    "Bitcoin itu jelas kami larang, tapi kalau buat transaksi sendiri-sendiri, silakan saja, risiko tanggung

    sendiri," ujar Eny pada Kamis, 26 Oktober 2017.

    Walaupun bitcoin dilarang BI, Eny menyebut, sistem blockchain itu patut dikembangkan sebagai salah

    satu inovasi. "Sampai saat ini, blockchain itu bukan uang dan tidak diakui, tapi memang menjadi salah

    satu teknologi yang harus dikembangkan," tuturnya.

    Blockchain adalah teknologi buku besar digital yang terdesentralisasi. Teknologi itu meliputi transaksi-

    transaksi, serta bekerja dengan data yang diatur melalui serangkaian catatan yang disebut blok.

    Sebelumnya, mantan Deputi Gubernur Bank Indonesia, Ronald Waas, mengimbau masyarakat berhati-

    hati menyikapi peredaran mata uang virtual bitcoin yang semakin meluas. Menurut Ronald, hingga kini

    Bank Indonesia tidak mengakui eksistensi bitcoin. "Bitcoin bukan alat pembayaran yang sah, hati-hati,"

    katanya kepada Tempo pada Jumat, 5 September 2014.
