Service Learning With Mr. Daniel Simeon At

Kapolei High School

Observation:

Physical Space:The seating arrangements arrangements were

very organized. The students each have their own pods to sit at during class. I thought that was effective because it was easy for Mr. Simeon to walk around and help each student individually if they needed help.

Wall Space

Wall space was very organized and neat. In Mr. Simeon’s science lab, they hung up the GLOs on the wall. I thought that was good for the students so that they could look at them and practice it daily.

Bulletin Board/ Technology

The bulletin board was actually apart of the white board. Mr. Simeon would write the assignments down that needed to be completed in class on the board. He would also write down the homework assignments.

The technology that they used were computers. They would go on them to research things based on their assignments. They also used a projector. They would use that to present their projects.

Supplies/ Curriculum Materials

Students would have to bring in their own supplies. For example they would have to bring their own pencil, pen, paper, and binder. Mr. Simeon would always have extras just in case the students forgot theirs.

The curriculum material that they had were textbooks, posters, and chart paper.

Ambience

The ambience of the classroom was very neat. I liked how Mr. Simeon was very organized. He made sure all of the papers each had its own bin to which they belong to. He also made sure the chairs were always pushed in. I liked how he decorated his room with positive posters to keep students motivated.

Observation:

Sociocultural Space- Procedures/ Routines:1. When students walk into class, they must find their

assigned seats. 2. Then they need to write down what is on the

bulletin board in their planners.3. They then have to work on their classroom work

assignments.4. When they leave the class, they must always push

in their chairs.5. On the way out they would greet Mr. Simeon bye.

Values

At Kapolei High School they value one team. So that is exactly what Mr. Simeon’s class practiced. They work together as groups. They also value respect. They all treat each other the way they want to be treated.

Demographics

The classroom is located in a two story building. Mr. Simeon’s class is located downstairs in a big open classroom. It is easy for him to walk around and give students one on one learning that they deserve.

Interactions

Student/ Student Interaction:

Students behave well each other. They all respect one another’s space and properties. They are also good about helping each other out.

Student/ Teacher Interaction:

Students are very respectful to Mr. Simeon. They treat each other like they are family. Mr. Simeon is very caring and helps students whenever they need help.

Discipline/ Authority

Although there are rules in his classroom, the discipline is rather laid back. Students know what to do when the bell rings. They are reminded with verbal reminders to get them back on track.

Life Adjustments

The students have learned how to be independent workers. They also learned how to do their homework assignments before doing any activities such as sports or even hanging out with friends.

Interview

When it comes to disciplining his class, Mr. Simeon is very fair. He makes sure that all students are staying on track. If they are not, he would verbally give them reminders to get back on track. When a student has behaivor issues, he would ask to talk to them outside in the hallways and remind them what they are coming to school for. He makes sure that every single one of his students follow his routines daily. For the most part he says that all his students follow his procedures. His most important routine is when the students have to write down their assignments in their planners.

Interview

He gets the students engaged in their work by providing activities for them to do. Sometimes he would give an art activity just so students can show their creativeness and to get their attention. On summers, he teaches U.S. History during summer school at Kapolei High School. He reinforces his values by constantly making sure his students practice them daily. He set up his classroom the way he did so that it is organized and easy to get around to all his students.

Interview

He gets the parents involved by having an Ohana night in the academy. During this night, parents get to know what their child is learning and what they can do to help them out and support them. He handles family and career by putting his perspectives in order. He puts family first and takes care of their personal needs. Then he takes care of his career by making sure his students get the help and support that they need. He became a teacher because he wanted to inspire students to become successful individuals not only in school but in their future careers as well.

Interview

The most stressful part of his job at times would be how other teachers are not on the same page when it comes to disciplining. The most rewarding part of his job is seeing all of his students walk down the aisle on graduation day. He attended University of Hawaii and graduated with his bachelors in education. The most important thing he learned in school was that every child comes with a different background and all times never judge them by their behavior because you never know what kind of lifestyle they have.

Service and Reflection

In the classroom I was like a teachers assistant. Whenever Mr. Simeon needed help like passing out papers, he would ask me to do it. Sometimes he let me teach the class the lessons that he had prepared. I love his teaching style. He is very helpful to all his students and treats them fairly. He respects all of them and gives them the support that they need. This whole experience makes me feel like I want to become a teacher even more. Just because of the love and care that he has for all of his students.

Students Work

Students had to create something using a t-shirt.
