1 Service-Learning Handout Normandale Campus Cupboard http://www.normandale.edu/campus-life/experiential-education/campus-cupboard Agency Description: The Campus Cupboard is a food pantry for Normandale Students who come to school hungry and don't have the financial means to eat every day. Campus Cupboard Mission: The Campus Cupboard, in cooperation with our community partner, Good in the ‘Hood, strives to meet the school day nutritional needs of Normandale Community College students experiencing financial challenges and food insecurity. Position Description: Students in specific service-learning classes can apply to volunteer in the Campus Cupboard. The volunteer position will check students in, help students get food, keep the Cupboard clean and organized, and assist with marketing and resource development. The Campus Cupboard is open Monday-Thursday 7:45 am-6 pm and Fridays 7:45 am-2 pm. Service-learners can complete their hours when the Cupboard is open. The Campus Cupboard is located in the Activities Building A2503. Those interested in completing their service-learning at the Campus Cupboard will need to commit to at least 10 hours of service over the course of one semester, which includes attending a required two-hour training. How to Apply: 1. Apply online: Go to www.normandale.edu/cee. Click on “Register for Service-Learning” twice. Our main goal is to keep our members and their loved ones united within their homes and communities for as long as possible through an integrated health care and case management program. Open Circle participants have access to daily activities, social services, nursing care and therapies all in one facility. Position Description: Students will co-facilitate daily activities and have the option of developing their own program or project based on interests and personal experiences. medical diagnosis. Students will have access to literature and video materials pertaining to dementia and dementia support services and may have the opportunity to participate with support groups. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct informational interviews with professionals in therapies, activities, social work and nursing departments. Hours available: Monday-Saturday, between the hours of 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Volunteer hours and shifts are flexible with a minimum of 2 hour blocks of time. All applicants must pass a criminal background check, complete required orientation and training and comply with Augustana Open Circle's policies, procedures and standards as deemed appropriate. Lifeworks www.lifeworks.org Agency Description: Lifeworks Services is a nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities live fuller lives that are integrated into the flow of community experience. Through employment at area businesses, social enrichment opportunities, and customized support services, Lifeworks provides the tools clients need to build the lives they want to live. For more than 40 years, we have collaborated with employers, volunteers, and government agencies to create expanded opportunities for people with disabilities. Locations: We have centers located in Apple Valley, Bloomington, Brooklyn Park, Eagan, Hastings and Mankato. We offer a Supported Employment program for people who have work as a goal. These individuals work in the community at more than 300 business’s and are supported by our staff who act in the role of a job coach. For people who do not have work as a goal we have a Life Enrichment program, offering a large variety of activities, opportunities to access the community, participate in groups and receive therapies (music, speech, occupational and physical). Position Description: Normandale students can lead groups to discuss social skills and participate in role playing opportunities, play board or computer games, pursue personal interests with individuals such as travel, crafts, reading, current events, sports or art. You may work one to one with individuals on the computer developing writing skills, helping with resumes, or learning overall technology skills. Students will not be left alone with clients and will be supervised by Lifeworks staff at all times. You will have access to our supervisors and direct care staff to ask questions and receive information related to our clients and organization. This is an opportunity to learn, grow and to make a difference in someone’s life. I hope you will consider joining us! Guidelines: We require a minimum of a 20 hour commitment, two hours per week for the ten week semester. Our centers accept students Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. We do not have opportunities in the evening or on the weekends. Good in the ‘Hood www.goodinthehood.org Agency Description: Good in the 'Hood is an organization dedicated to intentional acts of kindness that can simply make a difference in one life, one family, and one community at a time. We invite you to take a look at our programs, and to partner with us as we seek to inspire a contagious momentum of kindness in the urban and suburban communities. Our Food in the 'Hood distribution is the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month. Location: Cedarcrest Church 1630 E. 90th St. Bloomington, MN 55425.

Position Description: Just a positive can-do attitude with appropriate work clothing (no open-toed shoes) is all you need. Food in the 'Hood set-up and distributions are the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month. We have 2 volunteer shifts available:

12-4:30 pm (unloading trucks, set-up facility, pre-bagging produce, cleaning, administrative work, etc.)

4:30-9:30 pm (serving meals, distributing groceries, carrying boxes of food, childcare opportunities, cleaning, administration, etc.)

Oasis for Youth

www.oasisforyouth.org Agency Description: Oasis for Youth provides services for youth ages 16-21 who are struggling with homelessness and housing stability in Bloomington, Richfield and Edina. We are a volunteer-driven, community-supported tax exempt 501(c)3 corporation. Oasis for Youth operates a drop-in resource center. We provide onsite support and services as well as referrals to resources for shelter, counseling and medical assistance. We are participants in the Suburban Host Home Program that recruits, screens, trains and supports volunteer hosts for homeless youth. Drop-In Resource Center Hours: 2:00-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Our work begins with assessing the strengths and needs of a youth regarding housing, basic needs, education, employment, safety, and wellness. Youth goal plans and supportive services help youth move toward stability. Services: On-site laundry and shower facilities Computer/internet access Personal hygiene products and school supplies Clothing and Food Tutoring and educational assistance Employment Search assistance A safe, comfortable and welcoming place to rest Referrals to crisis shelter and supportive housing programs Referrals to family/individual counseling, mental health services, medical assistance, social services, and legal advice An evening meal is available at a community center one block away. Position Description: Drop-In Center Volunteers A criminal background check and references are required, with a minimal cost paid by the volunteer. Volunteers in the drop-in center must be 21 years of age or older. Volunteer shift hours are Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Volunteers assist with set-up and closing of the center, which requires some light lifting and light cleaning. Volunteers help to provide a safe, warm and welcoming atmosphere for the youth who visit. On-site volunteer duties include welcoming youth, assisting with youth intake and goal plans, providing support to youth and referral information for services, assisting with various programmed activities, and assisting with use of laundry and computer facilities, as needed. Volunteers for tutoring, outreach, transportation, and youth programs are also needed and also need to be 21 years of age and complete a background check process and training. Other opportunities include helping with special events including clothing and hygiene supply drives and assistance with advocacy, outreach, fundraising, publicity and marketing. Host home program volunteers and host homes are also needed. How to Apply:

Bridging www.bridging.org Agency Description: Bridging was founded on one simple, yet powerful idea – that together we can create a bridge between those in need and those with excess. Now, over 28 years and nearly 50,000 square feet later, Bridging is the largest furniture bank in North America. Driven by volunteers and donations of furniture and household goods from the community, Bridging has furnished over 70,000 homes since 1987. To serve as many people in need as possible, we work with a network of over 150 referring agencies, including social service and non-profit organizations, who refer clients to us. It’s time to take action today! We rely on volunteers to do just about everything at Bridging. In addition to being a great way to give back to those in need, volunteering is a terrific opportunity for team building, socializing and staying active. Through the effective reuse of donated items, Bridging improves lives by providing quality furniture and household goods to those transitioning out of homelessness and poverty. We serve over 80 households, over 240 people, each week who are given a sense of dignity as they rebuild their lives. Move donated furniture, bags and boxes throughout the warehouse.

Restock shelves for client shopping.

Accept community donations at the dock door.

Load and unload vehicles.

Lifting required; carts and dollies available.

“Field trips” in the community to pick up donations (must be 18+ to go on trucks) Warehouse Assistant schedules; Set a regular weekly schedule OR rotate from week to week/flexible scheduling. Current openings and schedules will be covered in your orientation tour. Martin Luther Campus

Agency Description: The Martin Luther Campus has been providing service to seniors for over 50 years, offering a continuum of services to help older adults live more independent, healthful, secure and meaningful lives. The campus is located in a serene neighborhood on the Minnesota River Bluffs just minutes from the Mall of America and airport. The campus provides assisted living, adult day services, long-term skilled nursing care and memory care for residents and participants who may need daily structure, assistance and ongoing medical care. Our short-term rehabilitation area offers therapies that enable individuals to regain strength to return to their previous living settings. Our care areas encourage residents to live life to the fullest by taking part in art, music, dance and clay classes as well as other activities and spiritual care. Position Description: As a volunteer you will have opportunities to assist with many programs and interact meaningfully with these vital seniors.
