You need great intelligence to sail through the marketplace

with great success.

• One aspect of marketplace intelligence is the art and heart of leadership

• Unfortunately, most courses teach you management but not leadership.

• As a result, we have good managers who are bad leaders.

You need to learn to be a good leader.

…In brief… MANAGERS establish

and implement procedures to ensure smooth functioning.

LEADERS look to the future and chart the course for the organization.

You need to make a journey from just

being a MANAGER to being a great LEADER.

Prepared for Service

• In a university, we’re prepared to serve.

• In the marketplace, if you fail to serve diligently, you will be outsmarted.

• The employer pays for a service.• Service is the highest form of

education we are supposed to acquire in school.

• When we get something different, we go out as half baked professionals.

The concept of a “servant”

In this age, people treasure:• fame, • climbing the corporate

ladder, • being promoted to a

managerial position,• outcompeting everyone, • getting a big job with a fat

salary, etc.©2013 Samuel A. Bakutana

Myths about Servanthood

• Being a helpless slave, • Being a dependent

beggar,• Doing donkey work for

others,• Being an ordinary person

with no dignity,• Having no choice or

freedom, etc.©2013 Samuel A. Bakutana

Page 9: SERVANT LEADERSHIP - Guest Lecture Presentation by Samuel A. Bakutana at MUBS on 09.03.2013

• is not a skill; it’s an attitude.

• is not self humiliation; it’s humility.

• is not losing freedom to choose; it’s gaining a license to serve.

Everyone is supposed to serve everyone else.

But being a Servant…

Servant leadership

• It is having a heart of service and going ahead to contribute to development.

• It is having an attitude of wanting to make others SMILE.

Have a mind-set of wanting to be a source of

solutions for others.©2013 Samuel A. Bakutana

Page 11: SERVANT LEADERSHIP - Guest Lecture Presentation by Samuel A. Bakutana at MUBS on 09.03.2013

As such, servant leaders:

1. Know that they are servants first2. Are good stewards of resources3. Are scapegoats: willing to sacrifice

self-interests for the sake of others4. Are sensitive: listen to others’

opinions5. Are motivated by a deep desire to help

others6. Do not fight for positions, but impact7. Understand the difference between

ambition and greed!©2013 Samuel A. Bakutana

Today’s Leadership Problem:

…leaders with a head, but no heart.©2013 Samuel A. Bakutana

“During the past three decades, roughly 90% of

sub-Saharan African leaders have behaved despotically, governed poorly, eliminated their

people’s human and civil rights, initiated or

exacerbated existing civil conflicts, decelerated per capital economic growth, and proved corrupt.”

- Robert I. Rotberge,President, World Peace

Forum

Head: Information. Heart: Transformation.

All qualities that make a leader outstanding are issues of the heart: integrity, stewardship,

compassion, consistency, etc.Service overflows from a transformed

heart. When you Serve, you Lead.

Leadership Thoughts

• As a man thinketh, so he is.

• Refer to the introduction of my book “Leadership Worth the Name” especially the first part about thoughts…

What we think about leadership and service influences how we lead

and serve.

Page 15: SERVANT LEADERSHIP - Guest Lecture Presentation by Samuel A. Bakutana at MUBS on 09.03.2013

So what do you think about LEADERSHIP?

Traits or Positions?

Functional or Titular?

Leadership is ACTION, not POSITION.

Page 16: SERVANT LEADERSHIP - Guest Lecture Presentation by Samuel A. Bakutana at MUBS on 09.03.2013

…to LEAD

• Leadership is influence through service.

Not everyone shall be famous, but everyone can be great because

everyone can serve.

• Greatness is a result of excellent service.

Great SERVICE is ImpossibleWithout Great CHARACTER

“95% of all leadership failures in the last century

were failures of character.” -Gen. Norman S.

character is not prepared for it.”

Questions of Service

Servant leaders ask themselves a number of questions to help them

serve better:

Page 20: SERVANT LEADERSHIP - Guest Lecture Presentation by Samuel A. Bakutana at MUBS on 09.03.2013

1 – Do I Need a Title to Serve?

• You don’t need a title to be a leader.

Illustrations:• Girl who saved my life when those

with titles looked on from a distance!

• The Chai Mama who is trusted even when she is not part of the administration

You simply need to be a person of INFLUENCE.

2 - In What Ways Can I Serve?

• There are many ways of killing a rat…!

Page 22: SERVANT LEADERSHIP - Guest Lecture Presentation by Samuel A. Bakutana at MUBS on 09.03.2013

…similarly…• There are many ways to bring about change in daily life

• Serving others is not only through being in a position/office.

• Someone with a heart of service thinks of many different ways to serve others and make many lives better.

… Ask yourself…

Use my gifts to make lives

better

Do something new for society

Do the same thing differently

Pay fees for an orphaned child

Write an educative article in the newspaper

Live a role model lifestyle

Write a proposal to bring good water to my

village

Give my best at my workplace

Speak to a group of youths about business Improve my

skills to give more to society

Refuse to give or receive a

bribe

Mentor a young person to be responsible

In what ways can I serve?
