    SPORT: SERBIAS BEST BRAND

The 2009 edition of the traditional Night of

the Ad Eaters (No reklamodera) saw anaward for the best promotion of nationalidentity in the past decade presented toSerbian sport, while the sixth annual Bestfrom Serbia awards ceremony in 2010 sawNovak okovi proclaimed the bestpromoter of Serbia. This should come as nosurprise, considering that even the countryspoliticians have long since admitted openlythat Serbias athletes are the countrys best

    ambassadors.It would be hard to nd a corner of the globewhere the people havent heard of football-ers like Nemanja Vidi, Dejan Stankovi orBane Ivanovi; tennis aces Novak okovi,Jelena Jankovi and Ana Ivanovi; basketballplayers Vlade Divac, Aleksandar orevi,Predrag Stojakovi and Dejan Bodiroga;water polo players Aleksandar otar,Alexander api, Vladimir Vujasinovi;

volleyball playing brothers Vanja and NikolaGrbi and Ivan Miljkovi; swimmers Miloradavi and Naa Higl, or ISSF Shooter of themillennium Jasna Sekari.Their sporting talents and successes arecertainly the result of the extraordinaryindividual talent of each of them, but ofcourse also the great eorts they exert andtraining and the expertise of their coaches. It is because of this that, despite the dicultyears of transition and economic crisis,

Serbian sport has achieved remarkablesuccesses on the international stage in allcategories from cadets to seniors. The

leading lights of this success have beenprovided by team sports and ball sports regardless of whether that ball is played onthe ground, in the air or in water. Serbiaswater polo team were triumphant at the2009 world championships. The countrysbasketball team, also completely rejuvenatedwith a new crop of young players, becameEuropean runners-up. The womens volleyballteam won the rst European League and the

mens football team won their FIFA WorldCup qualifying group ahead of France,Austria, Romania, Lithuania and the FaroeIslands, to secure their place in South Africa. And Serbias fans of football expect teammanager Radomir Anti to deliver a highachievement, just as the nations sportingfans have high expectations of the basketballplayers to compete at the World Champion-ships in Istanbul and the water polo players

who will compete in Zagreb for the title ofEuropean champion. And after achieving their successes, Serbiaschampions will be welcomed home by tensof thousands of Belgraders gathered underthe balcony of Belgrade City Hall, wheretraditionally, for more than two decades, thesuccesses of the nations athletes have beencelebrated.Of course, the sweetest victories are thosetasted on domestic soil, and Serbia, and

particularly Belgrade, has hosted many majorinternational competitions. In 2009 Belgradewas the successful host city of the Univer-siade World Student Games. In 2007 the city

welcomed the participants of the EuropeanYouth Olympic Festival (EYOF). Since 1939,when a circular course around Kalemegdanprovided the setting for the then FormulaOne Grand Prix of Yugoslavia, the capital ofYugoslavia and Serbia has hosted 36European and world championships, with thesuccessful assistance of the city of Novi Sad.The Karate World Cup will be held inBelgrade in 2010. In 2011 it will host the

European Mens Handball Championshipsand (together with Italy) the EuropeanVolleyball Championships for Women. Respectful of the Olympic spirit and winnersof Olympic medals

The Olympic Committee of Serbia (OCS) wasfounded a century ago, on 23rd February1910. By 1912 it had it had already sent thecountrys rst competitors to the SummerOlympics. Two Serbian athletes, sprinterDuan Miloevi and marathon runnerDragutin Tomaevi, competed at thoseGames of the V Olympiad in Stockholm, which also saw the OCS accepted into theInternational Olympic Committee and saw its

founder, Svetomir uki, become an IOCmember.Despite the hopes of the Serbian public, thetwo were not decorated with medals.Serbias rst medals were only won some 96years later, at the 29th Summer Olympics inBeijing in 2008, when Serbia and its OlympicCommittee reappeared on the Olympicscene. The rst medal, a silver, was won byswimmer Milorad avi in a dramatic

100m-buttery duel with the best swimmerof all time, American Michael Phelps. Thesecond and third medals, both bronzes, werewon by tennis player Novak okovi and thewater polo national team.Serbian athletes didnt actually wait 96 yearsfor an Olympic medal. Rather, they won themwearing the colours of Yugoslavia, alone orwith the other athletes of the SocialistFederal Yugoslavia, and in Athens 2004 under

the ag of Serbia & Montenegro.

The thread that linked all of these successeswas the Olympic Committee of Serbia, whose IOC membership was inherited by theYugoslav Olympic Committee (YOC) andthen the Olympic Committee of Serbia &

Montenegro (OCSCG), only for the circle tobe closed in 2006 with the return of the OCSinto the Olympic family. In total, the athletes of the OCS, JOC andOCSCG (precisely 1,323; 1,128 men and 195women) participated at 22 SummerOlympics and won 98 medals: 28 golds, 35silvers and 35 bronze medals. They achieved most success in team sportsand ghting disciplines. Nearly a third of

medals, precisely 30, were won in ballgames: 10 for water polo, eight for basket-ball, ve each for handball and football andtwo for volleyball. When it comes toindividual sports, most success was seen bythe countrys wrestlers, with 16 medals, followed by boxing and gymnastics, with 11medals each, and shooting, with 10 Olympicmedals. In the year marking its 100th anniversary, the

OCS, led by legendary basketball playerVlade Divac, is preparing the Olympic hopesof Serbia to participate in the rst SummerYouth Olympic Games in August in Singa-pore, while in November Belgrade will hostthe General Assembly of the EuropeanOlympic Committees (EOC) and use theoccasion to stage the central celebrations ofthis centennial jubilee. The ocial website of the Olympic

Over time it also becamethe most important traditional sportingevent in Belgrade and Serbia, known andrecognised by all racing bodies from theWorld organisers of the Association ofInternational Marathons and Distance Races(AIMS), through elite athletes, to pleasurerunners, globetrotting runners who travel

from continent to continent, racing in orderto meet new places and people. The Belgrade Marathon takes place on thethird weekend of April and is not merely arace covering a distance of 42,195 metres.Rather, it simultaneously oers runners thechance to compete in the half-marathon orthe 5km FUN RUN for youngsters who arejust falling in love with running and theoldest competitors, who have too many

miles under their belt.Belgrade Marathon has not overlooked theracers and sportsmen of the future either, having organised the Children's marathon 17times. A unique race for a unique arena

Many battles were waged on BelgradesKalemegdan Fortress during the past

millennium. At its beginning the residentCelts were deposed by the Romans, whobuilt a castra military encampment. Then, over time, dierent nations came and went, sustaining greater or fewer losses. Theseincluded the Byzantines, Slavs, Hungarians,Serbs, Turks and Austro-Hungarians. Some ofthem occupied it several times and all ofthem left their mark on the Belgrade Fortress, never dreaming that one day the walls and

gardens they fought and died for, demol-ished and rebuilt, would host a very dierentkind of battle. The area of Belgrade's Fortress onKalemegdan Park is the scene of a uniqueracing event thats not a street race, nor across-country event, nor a mountain race, but rather all three together: the BelgradeRace Through History.A unique concept combining history, culture

and sport, coupled with a unique venue builtover centuries and a well-designed ancillaryprogramme, have contributed to ensuringthat Serbias Belgrade Race Through Historygained the status of a cultural treasure, recognised by many worldwide andsupported by the International Association ofAthletics Federations (IAAF).Of course, the races biggest supporters arethe competitors who have proven their

worth at least once on this course of stone,

earth, grass, tarmac and wood, which runsfrom the fortresss Donji Grad (Lower Town)to the plateau of the Victor monument,

created by sculptor Ivan Metrovi. The greatest and most ardent competitor isKenyan Paul Tergat, one of the best runnersof all time and a former world record holderat 10,000 metres, half-marathon andmarathon. When he rst came to competein the race through history in 1996 he fell inlove with both the race and Belgrade. Hecame for the next three years and, althoughhe never won, was constantly enquiring

during the period of the races freezing when it would be reinstated. The race returned to the schedule in 2009and Paul Tergat came as a promoter. He alsoannounced that he will run the BelgradeFortress course in 2010, alongside 25 eliterunners from all continents.Moroccan Brahim Lahla has held therecord time of 16:58 for this unusual anddicult course (5,834m) since 1996, but his

reign, like those of all others who have heldthis spot, will not last forever. The race is organised by company Beograd-ski maraton ltd. and sponsored by theBelgrade City Assembly. Its partners are theInstitute for the Protection of CulturalMonuments of Belgrade, the TouristOrganisation of Belgrade and publiccompany Belgrade Fortress.More at www.bgdmarathon.org

    Tourism and cycling together

    When Politika newspaper journalist Aca

Bugarskis idea inspired newspapers Politikaand Novo Vreme to join forces with RadioBelgrade to organise the rst Tour de Serbiebike race in 1939, few could have imaginedthat the race would continue into the nextcentury. And it survives to this day. The last race, in2009, marked the 70th anniversary of itsstatus as a prominent staged internationalbicycle racing competition. Each year it

attracts competing cyclists from everycontinent, who vie for the world rankingpoints of the International Cycling Union(UCI) in category 2.2. They compete and, regardless of whether they mounted thepodium in the end, they return to Serbiasroads the next year, and the next...Racing is the dominant dimension of the Tourde Serbie, but the events other dimensionsare not neglected either. They contribute to

ensuring that all guests feel comfortable andare, thus, easily able to forget and recoverfrom the physical exertion of each stage, andeven the bitter sting of defeat. The spirit of traditional Serbian hospitalitypermeates through the race and the route iscarefully mapped out by the organisers inconjunction with the Tourist Organisation ofSerbia and in accordance with its long-timeslogan Tourism and cycling together. The

course must meet the needs of the sportitself, requiring both at and mountainstages that enable both sprinters and

mountain riders to shine and be safe. Moreover, because the cyclists are followedby TV crews, the course must also beattractive, enabling participants and viewersto get to know the most beautiful side ofSerbia, its national parks, cultural andhistorical monuments, tourist centres etc.The Tour de Serbie is held in mid-June everyyear and has ve to seven stages, at leasttwo of which end on top of beautiful

mountains like Zlatibor or Kopaonik, wherecompeting cyclists are awaited by crowds oftourists. Other stages generally culminate atone of the many spas for which Serbia isrenowned. In 2010 these were Vrnjaka Spa,Vranjska Spa and Gamzigrad Spa, while thecyclists competing to arrive rst at thesedestinations came from Armenia, Austria,Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany,Greece, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Montene-

gro, the Netherlands, Romania, Russia,Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey and theUkraine. To nd out who proved victorious at the Tourde Serbie, visit the races website atwww.tds.co.rs.

More commonly known as thePali Olympics, the tournament includedtrack and eld events, gymnastics, swimming, rowing, boxing, wrestling, fencingand cycling. Such a comprehensiveprogramme required sporting facilities, so inearly 1884 an elliptical athletics track was

built at Pali. It was 225 metres long and wasthe rst venue in this part of the world tohave spectator stands. Then, in 1891, acircular concrete track 500 metres long waslaid for cycling competitions.
