They slice a coconut in two, hollow it out, cut a hole in one half of the shell just big enough for a monkey‟s hand to pass through. Then they place an orange in the other coconut half before fastening together the two halves of the coconut shell. Finally, they secure the coconut to a tree with a rope, retreat into the jungle, and wait. Sooner or later, an unsuspecting monkey swings by, smells the delicious orange, and discovers its location inside the coconut. The monkey then slips his hand through the small hole, grasp the orange, and tries to pull it through the hole. Of course, the orange won‟t come out; it‟s too big for the hole. To no avail the persistent monkey continues to pull and pull, never realizing the danger he is in. While the monkey struggles with the orange, the hunters simply stroll in and capture the monkey by throwing a net over him. As long as the monkey keeps his fist wrapped around the orange, the monkey is trapped. It‟s too bad. The poor monkey could save its own life if it would let go of the orange. However, it rarely occurs to a monkey that it can‟t have both the orange and its freedom. That delicious orange becomes a deadly trap. The world sets traps for you that are not unlike the monkey trap. You constantly hear that if you just have enough money, enough stuff, enough power, enough prestige, then you‟ll be happy. That means it requires thinking and a little planning. The type of encouragement I am talking about here is what you might even call “scripted”. It is something that you tuck away inside your heart like a necessary resource as you begin your day. Then, when you cross paths with someone who looks like they need some encouragement, you reach down inside and pull a bit out and give it away. The Bible gives us many examples of the power of encouragement and none more apparent than the story of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. This was a big job –– a really big job. It would take skill, time and resources, all of which were available in limited quantities. Yet, they got the job done on time and as God had ordained it. Why? I would like to think it was many random acts of kindness committed by “God‟s prophets” as they daily walked among the stone and iron workers, the carpenters and masons, encouraging them, complimenting and praising their working spirit. They became conduits of God‟s grace by which each worker could individually taste the love of God. And, that‟s what we are when we go out of our way to be encouragers. Native hunters in the jungles of Africa have a clever

way of trapping monkeys. They slice a coconut in two,

hollow it out, cut a hole in one half of the shell just big

enough for a monkey‟s hand to pass through. Then they place

an orange in the other coconut half before fastening together

the two halves of the coconut shell. Finally, they secure the

coconut to a tree with a rope, retreat into the jungle, and wait.

Sooner or later, an unsuspecting monkey swings by,

smells the delicious orange, and discovers its location inside

the coconut. The monkey then slips his hand through the

small hole, grasp the orange, and tries to pull it through the

hole. Of course, the orange won‟t come out; it‟s too big for

the hole. To no avail the persistent monkey continues to pull

and pull, never realizing the danger he is in.

While the monkey struggles with the orange, the

hunters simply stroll in and capture the monkey by throwing

a net over him. As long as the monkey keeps his fist wrapped

around the orange, the monkey is trapped. It‟s too bad. The

poor monkey could save its own life if it would let go of the

orange. However, it rarely occurs to a monkey that it can‟t

have both the orange and its freedom. That delicious orange

becomes a deadly trap.

The world sets traps for you that are not unlike the

monkey trap. You constantly hear that if you just have

enough money, enough stuff, enough power, enough

prestige, then you‟ll be happy. Under that illusion, people

spend their whole lives thinking you must have it all.

The call of Christianity is unlike that of the world.

The world focuses on what you and I get out of life. A

Christian should focus on what they can give.

When was the last time you went out of your way to

encourage someone? I‟m not talking about the little remark

or that wink of an eye. While these things encourage, they

are conservative in that there is little required of us.

I have always felt that encouragement is something

you possess as a resource inside of you; something that

needs to be processed and replenished so it will always be

there at the ready when someone needs it. That means it

requires thinking and a little planning.

The type of encouragement I am talking about here

is what you might even call “scripted”. It is something that

you tuck away inside your heart like a necessary resource as

you begin your day. Then, when you cross paths with

someone who looks like they need some encouragement, you

reach down inside and pull a bit out and give it away.

The Bible gives us many examples of the power of

encouragement and none more apparent than the story of the

rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. This was a big job –– a

really big job. It would take skill, time and resources, all of

which were available in limited quantities. Yet, they got the

job done on time and as God had ordained it. Why? I would

like to think it was many random acts of kindness committed

by “God‟s prophets” as they daily walked among the stone

and iron workers, the carpenters and masons, encouraging

them, complimenting and praising their working spirit. They

became conduits of God‟s grace by which each worker could

individually taste the love of God. And, that‟s what we are

when we go out of our way to be encouragers. Look for

someone today who needs to experience God‟s love through

you.

Dr. Howard Hendricks writes: "Every disciple needs

three types of relationships in his life. He needs a „Paul‟ who

can mentor him and challenge him. He needs a „Barnabas‟

who can come alongside and encourage him. And he needs a

„Timothy,‟ someone that he can pour his life into."

WOMEN’S MINISTRY

Will NOT meet Monday

September 13th Conference is Sept. 25th

It‟s back to school time! If your child is beginning to read chapter books, we have a

large number of them in the library for all ages. Below are some of them:

CUL-DE-SAC KIDS by Beverly Lewis. When your 7 to 10 year olds join the kids on the cul-

de-sac at Blossom Hill Lane, they‟ll encounter realistic (and funny) predicaments that point to

Jesus as the ultimate mystery solver!

THREE COUSINS DETECTIVE CLUB by Elspeth Campbell Murphy. It‟s Sarah Jane,

Titus and Timothy from the Three cousins Detective Club! The three 10-year-olds are ready to

learn about favorite proverbs from the Bible while solving more exciting, adventure filled

mysteries! Ages 9-12.

And for your younger children there are YOUNG COUSINS MYSTERIES for ages 4-8.

HEROES OF THE FAITH Each of these is a biography of great people of Faith, Conviction, Courage and Unwavering

Faith who help believers face incredible challenges to accomplish God‟s will. My personal favorite is Samuel Morris, a

young man that served the Lord with all his heart, soul and mind. Ages 12 to adult.

Watch next month for the winner of our Summer Reading Club.

Ladies In Action Mission News

Thank you, church family for the cans you give to our Ladies In Action group. Cashing in

these cans gives us the opportunity to give to mission projects. Also, thank you for the tabs

you collect. These tabs are given to Sunrise Children‟s Services so they can buy age-

appropriate Bibles for each child going through their programs. Both the cans and the tabs

are great mission opportunities for each family and you certainly “come through” for us.

We appreciate all you do for this ministry.

In September, the Ladies In Action will sponsor a “Christmas” box to be sent to the Grants.

Donation lists will be available at the distribution area as will the collection box. Be praying

about what God would have you contribute towards the filling and shipping of this box.

The collection will be for the month of September only. Thank you in advance

for how you‟re going to allow God to use you to bless so many others.
