Class 7

Our ClassroomI love my classroom and I think you will too! We have enough space to store everything we will ever need but it’s small enough that you don’t need to shout at each other from across the

room. Also, we get lots of light in the summer so it is night and bright in class but we can also make it really dark so we can see the board clearly.

We line up on the Year 5 and 6 playground in the morning and at the end of playtimes. We also have a very short way to go when we go for playtimes. Our cloakroom is the first one you

come to when you enter the school through the doors.

Mr MadgwickMr Madgwick is the interim Year 5 Leader, keeping the role cosy while Mrs Pimm is enjoying her maternity leave with her new daughter. He is also leader of our school’s Eco

Committee. Although this is his fourth year at MPJS, this is Mr Madgwick’s second class. In his previous roles, he would

have spent some time in different classes and become familiar with children throughout the school.

Class 8

Our ClassroomOur classroom is a lovely, bright place to be. We have a massive class library of books, a separate art bay and lots of cupboards full to the brim with cool stuff for you to use. We are situated right next to the Hall, Elsa Room and Care Room so if you happen to be hungry, accidentally hurt yourself (hope not) or need to talk to someone, they’re right outside! We also have a cloakroom that is right next to our beautiful, school bird garden. How lucky are we? We line up on the Year 5 / 6 playground on the yellow line outside Mr Lant’s classroom. Our classroom has everything you will need for your year ahead so please don’t waste any money buying anything as I have it all ready and waiting for you.

Mr KellyMr Kelly has worked at Mount Pleasant for 15 years (he must really love it!) He has taught in every year group but has been in Year 5 for quite a few years (he must really love Year 5 too!) As well as teaching Year 5 he also is responsible for Science and Art across the school which are two of his favourite subjects. He is super excited to meet his new class in September as he has heard lots of great things about them from Mrs Kelly who happens to be his wife.

Class 9

Our ClassroomOur new classroom has a wonderful reading corner, a spacious art bay and lots of space within the room. We also have our own, exclusive cloakroom which is fantastic! Although we will play on the Year 5 and 6 playground, we will line up on the Year 3 and 4 playground and therefore we need to set an example to our youngest children in school and make our way to our classroom which will be next to Mrs Savage’s room.

Mrs MacMrs Mac has worked at Mount Pleasant for eight

years now and this will be her second year in Year 5. She is thoroughly looking forward to meeting all of the new children moving into the year group and working with new members of staff. Her favourite

subject to teach is English and she loves spending time in the new school library.

We are very lucky to have four wonderful teaching assistants working with all three

classes this year. They will be supporting our learning, working with groups of children and

will be leading intervention groups. They will help our class teachers to prepare

for lessons and will always be there if anyone needs any help. They will prepare our resources and help to organise our

homework and daily reading activities amongst a million other jobs in Year 5. They

are amazing and we can’t wait to get started.

Our Chosen Texts For Year 5These are the texts that we base a lot of our English and Topic work

around. We think they are great and we can’t wait to share them with you.

HomeworkFor Autumn and Spring terms, our homework for Year 5 will be mainly focussed on the basic skills, such as, reading, spelling and multiplication recall.

Each week, children will be required to have read at home at least 3 times a week (evidenced by signatures) with an adult – this will then be checked on a Friday and acknowledged by the teacher. We also ask that children are accessing TTRockstars throughout the week.

Once the children start the Summer Term, we will start to give out more formal homework alongside these essential skills in order to get the children ready for the requirements of Year 6 and ultimately, what they will then go on to receive at secondary school.

General Year 5 Information

Times TablesWe have had a very successful first year with Times Tables Rockstars and it is clear that engagement is high. Children will be expected to continue using the platform to aid their development. On Friday mornings, children will be given a TTRS test which will consist of 60 questions based on a specific times table and these questions will include both multiplication and division. Periodically, we will give children a times table check which will involve all times tables.

StationeryWe have a huge resource base filled with everything we think your child may possibly need to use in school. You child will always have access to anything they may need so we kindly ask that children refrain from bringing pencil cases to school with them.

Games and PEChildren have two sessions of PE per week, which are subject to change depending on hall timetables; therefore, please can children have their PE kit in school at the beginning of each week. With the colder weather, please can we ask that children have appropriate clothing ready for outdoor PE? Tracksuit bottoms and a warm jumper would be ideal. Additionally, please could we ensure that children have some way of covering up or removing jewellery e.g. earrings?

General Year 5 Information

ExpectationsAs we move from Lower Key Stage 2 up to Upper Key Stage 2, your child(ren) are now in the older half of the school. They will have been at the school for two years and fully aware of the expectations the school has of them. All we ask is that they continue to set the same example they have done for for the past two years for those children in the younger year groups. We have a very fun time in Year 5 and this can only happen when everyone is doing their part and meeting what is expected of them. We have heard very positive praise from the Year 4 staff about this year group and we are all very excited to meet the children.

Indoor ShoesIt is essential that all children have a pair of indoor shoes and these MUST be plimsols and not leisure trainers or slippers. When children change their shoes, it ensures that our carpets are kept clean and dry throughout the school and in classrooms. We can work with families to help obtain a pair of indoor shoes should they be needed. If a child persistently lacks a pair of indoor shoes, we may keep them indoors during break and lunch time.

SpellingsOn Fridays, children will be given an extra ‘Look Cover’ spelling sheet that is to be taken home. This is their chance to get to grips with the coming week’s spellings. Children will be given their class ‘Look Cover’ every Monday morning, when we will use the morning to discuss the words and further understand them. We have now signed up to Spelling Shed which will be a great resource for children to practice their year 5/6 spellings.
