September 29, 2019 THE BEVERLY CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE
RCIA ~~ “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults”
We are now in the process of getting our RCIA Program ready for the new year. RCIA includes people inter-ested in becoming Catholic, Catholics who were baptized but never received the Sacraments of Confirma-tion and First Eucharist, people who were baptized in another denomination and wish to be full members of the Church, as well as full members of the Church who share their own experiences and help prepare peo-ple to receive the Sacraments. People who participate in the RCIA usually people receive the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil. The length of the program varies, depending on the person’s individual needs and de-sires.
If you think the RCIA may be just what you are looking for, here are some questions you might ask yourself:
1. Have you ever thought about becoming a Catholic? 2. Are you baptized in another Christian faith but have been coming to Mass with your family? 3. Do you wonder just how long it would take to become a part of the Catholic Church? 4. Are you waiting for just the right time, thinking someday I’ll look into it?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions, the RCIA may be the perfect fit for you.
On Thursday, October 3rd, we will have an information session on the RCIA. We will meet at the Collaborative Offices (552 Cabot Street, the former St. John’s Rectory). Also, if you know of someone who might be interested, why not give a copy of this bulletin with the information.

September 29, 2019 THE BEVERLY CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE
Ask Jennifer Fulwiler her occupation and she might answer wife and mother, and she’d be correct. She could answer radio host, podcaster, and blogger and she’d be accurate too. With two published books and a third on the way, she could add writer to her job description, and while for many people, any one of these things would be a full-time career, she can also add stand up comic to her resume. Jennifer has a natural sense of humor and sees a need for an authentic Catholic presence in the world of comedy, knowing that you never know who will be in the audience on any given night. Whether it is imparting the Catholic faith to her children, reaching out to Catholic moms throughout the nation, speaking to young people about making vocational choices based on the Gospels, or casting a wide net to reach anyone she can with her gifts and talents to lead people to Christ, I think the job that puts all of these things togeth-
er is that of an evangelist, which is something Jennifer does every day.
Jennifer is not a lifelong evangelist, if anything the opposite could be said. She was raised without any religion, con-sidered herself not only an atheist, but was pretty anti-religious. She was always someone who had to know the truth about matters, and this is what set her on the road to faith. The more she tried to disprove what she learned and read about God, the more she discovered truth. The story of her journey to faith is detailed in her book Something Other Than God, which has been a Catholic best seller and has become an instant Catholic classic. What is equally intri-guing is they story of how this book came to be which is described in her second book, One Beautiful Dream: The Rol-licking Tale of Family Chaos, Personal Passions, and Saying Yes to Them Both. Here she not only shares the joys and challenges of Catholic motherhood and family life, but also the discernment process about the best ways she could use her gifts to build God’s kingdom. She tells of the moment where her desire to be a writer, a dream she always had, came to life again. It happened in an unexpected way. She had heard the expression “every baby comes with a loaf of bread under its arms” which she interpreted as a reminder to be open to the graces and new ways God works when a new life enters your world, whether it is a newborn baby, a new friend, or a new opportunity. She discovered the truth of these words after the birth of her third child. It was time for a more practical car, a minivan, and they had their eyes on a used vehicle, but it was a private sale which meant they needed to have the money upfront. Between savings, they had all but $1,000 available. Two things happened. First, Jennifer’s husband Joe was given a gift of $200 and second, $817 mysteriously appeared as an automatic deposit in their checking account. She thought it was an error, but it turned out the money rightfully belonged to Jennifer. Prior to the birth of her first child, she worked in the technical world and she also had a blog. The subject of her blog was humorous and involved sitting in a coffee shop observing people ordering coffee. She tried to analyze their personalities based on their order which became the subject of her blog entries. The blog was rediscovered by readers after being ignored for years and the deposit came from advertisers who sponsored her blog. When her husband Joe repeated the words “They say that every baby comes with a loaf of bread under its arms” Jennifer brushed it aside even though she had had the same thought, but at this moment she began looking at new ways, perhaps unexpected ways, that God might be calling her to use her gifts in a different way.
Sherry Weddell is a Catholic convert who encourages people to be more than just believers, she wants them to be what she terms “Intentional Disciples” where the faith is more than just what we do on Sundays but permeates every as-pect of our lives. In her book Fruitful Discipleship, she sees three stages we go through in large and small ways through-out our faith lives. The first is that of a seeker, one who is beginning the journey, searching for God even if the person may not know that their heart is leading them to God. Second is discipleship where we formally learn about the faith. The final step in the journey is apostleship where the faith is lived. In Jennifer Fulwiler’s case, the most formal way she was a seeker, disciple, and apostle were when she was looking into the Catholic faith, entered the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults to formally learn the faith, and when she was baptized and lived the Catholic faith fully. Yet after coming into the Church there were smaller moments too, such as when she got the nudge that God was calling her to more, looked at ways she might respond to this call, and finally became a Catholic Evangelist as a wife and mother, as well as a blogger, writer, and stand up comedienne.
Each year as summer turns to fall, our schedules get a bit busier. Ideally during the summer months when the pace can often be slower and we have the time, it can be a time to reflect on our lives, where our lives are going, how we live as disciples of Jesus Christ, and where we might be called to live this life a bit fuller. This does not always happen, but as life gets busier, sometimes we do ask ourselves important questions about life. Maybe the busy pace makes us wonder what is important and what may be of lesser importance. Now might be a good time to look at what it is we are seeking and where the Holy Spirit is leading us, what it is we need to do to be living this call and going out and doing it. And if you happen to be reading this post and feel that the Holy Spirit is leading you to the Catholic faith, think about inquiring about the Rite of Christian Initiation program our parish offers. We’d love to help you on your journey, sharing our gifts, knowing that you too come with gifts too.

Healthier Priests. Stronger Communities.
Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.
The strength and vibrancy of our communities depend largely on the welfare of our priests who tirelessly serve others from all walks of life.
Powerful examples of strength in community are visible across 144 cities and towns of the Archdiocese of Boston. The roots of these communities can be traced back to the work of our priests.
Pine Street Inn: A Boston priest was one of the original founders of Pine Street Inn, which provides shelter and emergency services for nearly 2,000 homeless men and women in the Boston area every day.
Cor Unum: Started by a Lawrence pastor, Cor Unum (“One Heart”) food pantry serves more than 250,000 meals annually to poverty-stricken families in Lawrence.
Addiction Support for Families: A Boston priest’s expertise in addiction and recovery has been instrumental for organizations helping families and individuals in the grips of addiction.
Rostro de Cristo: Efforts to help the poor on the margins of Ecuador’s largest city is hard work, except for those who have been inspired by a Boston priest who started Rostro de Cristo, an organization based in Boston that lives the Gospel and serves the poor.
It’s simple: healthier priests mean stronger communities. Please support clergytrust.org
