The theme for the day this year was ‘Disaster Response and Preparedness using Remote Sensing’. The celebraons were held on the 12th & 16th of August. The events on the first day were largely informal hosted in the form of interacve games and an alumnus meet. The fun part of the evening consisted of 3 acvies, first of which was tled KBC with a twist of Remote Sensing, a simple rendion of the popular game show, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepa’. The second event was innovave and tled ‘Mind Your Meme’, wherein parcipants were asked to create their own memes with an underlying theme of GIS and Remote Sensing. This acvity saw quite a lot of hilarious representaons of the subject. The third event was a simulaon-based game designed by the United Naons Office of Disaster Risk Reducon (UNDRR) called ‘Stop the Disaster’ where the parcipants were given calamitous scenarios and had to come up with soluons to minimize risk due to the disaster. The events of the second day were hosted under the aegis of Ahmedabad Chapters of ISG (Indian Society of Geomacs) and ISRS (Indian Society of Remote Sensing). The event consisted of an expert session by Dr. Prakash Chauhan (Director, Indian Instute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun) on the theme ‘Remote Sensing for Disaster Response’. It concluded with an enlightening panel discussion by eminent personalies in the Remote Sensing Industry and Academia - Mr. I.C. Mateida (SAC, ISRO, Ahmedabad), Dr. Anjana Vyas (Senior Professor, Geomacs Program), Dr. C.P. Singh (SAC, ISRO, Ahmedabad), Dr. Anupam Singh (Professor, KIT Germany), Dr. Nandakumar & Dr. Ami Rawal (Assoc. Prof, MSU Baroda). Adapng to the new normal, the event was conducted on an online plaorm with all due pomp and circumstance. Every year National Remote Sensing Day is celebrated on 12th August to honour physicist & Astronomer, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the pioneer of Indian Space Science. crunches to dancing, singing, mimicry, vines, stand-up comedy, musical instruments, skipping to poetry recitation. Numerous students displayed their out-of-the-box thinking by presenting videos of humorous skits and plays, relaying the experiences of online learning. The videos were preempted by introductions and interspersed with dare based challenges.The juniors provided neck-to-neck competition to seniors, overwhelming them with their incredible number of entries and display of talent. The batchmates cheered each other in the comments section, appreciating every performance with ample enthusiasm. The video of the on-campus Ice-Breaker event of the previous year gave one and all a glimpse of what they are missing out. The event provided an opportunity to enjoy the campus experience and comfortably communicate in an offline mode.

STUDENT CORNER

The monsoon semester at CEPT University is usually filled with a variety of events in all the departments. The elections are a much-awaited event of the semester. Every year, the student council is elected to lead and coordinate the annual activities and events. Elections for the academic year 2020-21 were held differently. Adopting the annual tradition, the Election Committee conducted the elections between 16th to 23rd August on a digital platform. The position of president, administrative secretary, academic secretary was open for the final year students, cultural secretary for the students of 3rd year and the sports secretary for the students from 2nd year. The elections started with the presentation of the candidates’ manifesto. It exhibits their skills for the particular post and elaborates on their vision and mission to the general body.

It was then followed by campaigning on social media for two days. Out of 185 eligible voters, 175 students (94.59%) voted to form the student council, 2020-21 through google ballot forms. The results were declared on the same day at 5:30 p.m. and the winning candidates were heartily welcomed by the general body. Elections for sports secretary and re-election for the post of cultural secretary were conducted on 23rd August 2020.

We all welcome the UG Student Council with great enthusiasm and expectations.

E I A D R A F T D I S C U S S I O NThe Talk Club, a student initiative by the Faculty of Architecture (UG Batch’18) conducted their first big talk on ‘EIA Draft 2020’ on 24th August. The talk was organized in an unique format in which individual participant was given a position which they had to defend. The talk aimed to understand the pros and cons of the EIA Draft 2020 from different perspectives. The talk was conducted in collaboration with The Matter Collective - they are a group of individuals, who have come together to implore the government to recall the EIA Draft Notification, 2020. Khushi Shah (FT, Batch’16) - Civilian, Riya Maheriya (FT, Batch 16) - Politician, Snehil Tripathi (FA, Batch ‘18) - Industrialist and Ujjwala Krishwa (FA, Batch’18) - Environmentalist defended their respective roles for the same.

Warmly welcoming the PG first-year batch of the FT-PG, the FT-PG Council members arranged a virtual Ice-Breaking session. While the country enthralled with the celebrations of 73 years of independence, the students of FT-PG relished the interactive session with their fellow batch mates. The M.Tech. BEP team of Anmol Mathur, Nikhil Singh , Shubham Solanki, Vardan Soi, and Yaduvanshi has secured 3rd position at the ASHRAE Design Competition in the ‘Integrated Sustainable Building Design’ (ISBD) category. The ASHRAE Student Design Competition recognizes outstanding student design projects, encourages students to become involved in the profession, promotes teamwork, and allows students to apply their knowledge of practical design. ISBD is intended for students of mixed disciplines with enough training to work collaboratively on the building, mechanical and electrical design. The participating teams were expected to design an energy-efficient, sustainable project approaching a Zero Net Energy building with minimized energy demands for HVAC and all other technical systems that could be satisfied with locally available and/or building installed Renewable Energy Sources.

An alumnus of the FT, Vighnesh Jain (Batch 15) got his paper selected at the National Conference on Material, Mechanics & Modelling. The title of the paper was ‘State of Art for Alternative Materials for Flexible Pavements’. The research paper was written by Vighnesh as a part of his thesis for the bachelor’s program of construction technology and was co-written by Prof. Anal Sheth, a former professor at FT. The Conference took place on 29th and 30th August, via a virtual meeting. It was organized by NIT Jamshedpur. The conference was inspired by the fusion of Mechanics and Materials Science fields from the Modelling viewpoints to yield new methodologies and simulation-based engineering.

FT Alumni Series, initiated by Gaurav Goyal (Batch’18), conducted its third session on 22nd August 2020. Ms. Dhvanee Bhavsar (VDC Engineer at Turner Technical Services, IGBC AP) alumni of FT (Batch’14) was invited as the speaker. The theme of the session was BIM & Education at FT. Pandemic had restricted the interaction to virtual meet-ups via Google Meet, but it did not waver the participation. It was an informative session covering the brief introduction of BIM (Building Information Model) and it’s applications. Ms. Dhvanee also gave her insights on professional life and shared her experience of how the education she gained at FT helped her in her career. They held an International Youth Day Summit 2020 on 16th August. It was a summit wherein established entrepreneurs talked about their experiences and journeys of their startups.
