HOW HAVE WE CHANGED
OURSELVES ON THIS NIGHT?
Don’t let the title mislead you, this is
the column for September 2018, not
April of 2019. But I was thinking about
the High Holidays and what a difference each
service can make in our lives. Starting with S’lichot
on September first at 7:30 PM to Sukkoth which
ends on Sunday the 30th, we have a great variety
of prayer motifs to choose from. There will be
singing and speaking and standing and sitting and
marching and dancing all as we try to get closer to
G-D and each other. But, let’s be honest, there is
a certain measure of routine to our High Holiday
services, most begin at the same time, 8 PM at
night and 10 AM in the morning. They do end
differently depending upon how much I want to
speak. Some say too long, some say too short and
some say just right, it’s the Three Bears of
Judaism.
That’s the kernel of the beauty of Judaism, not
one size fits all. Some of our congregants prefer
the Choir, some the poetry of the Mahzor (Prayer
book), some, I am proud to say, my drashes. Don’t
worry, some don’t like my drashes and are not shy
about telling me.

The Sisterhood will be selling Honey
Boxes for Rosh Hashanah.

RABBI’S COLUMN, CONTINUED
We cannot and should not try to please everyone. What each of us has to do is to please ourselves. We
come to the High Holy Days from many different places, physically, emotionally and spiritually. The trials
of life have taken a toll on each of us. Therefore, we need and must have our own unique experience
when celebrating the High Holy Days. We start early with S’lichot so that we have enough time to review
the last year and where we have done the same old boring stuff and accomplished the same old mitzvoth
and committed the same old sins. It is time for new sins!
Just kidding, kinda! It is time for new adventures. Try new things, go to new places or, if that is
impossible, go to the same old places but look at them with different eyes. A simple exercise is driving to
work. One day pick a different route to your place of employ. Try to go before or after rush hour so you
can see the wonders of your route with endangering yourself. Next pick an activity you have been
meaning to do but keep putting off. DO IT, don’t wait. Who knows what is will befall you!
Last month, a sweet, lovely, friendly woman who works in one of the National Council of Jewish Women
Thrift Shops, discovered she had lung cancer and three weeks later she died. What are we waiting to
accomplish?
On the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, we are 10 days into apologizing for our poor behavior for the past
year, surely we have spent a good deal of time coming clean. However, if you view the word
ATONEMENT, a bit differently, it could be read as’ AT ONE MENT’. Who should we be one with? God, of
Course. And what was G-d’s first activity Vis a Vis, us?
Creating US. So, if you want to be AT ONE with God, Create new experiences, new attitudes, make
yourself a new person, ‘created in’ the image of G-d. Create for yourself a New World. It does not have to
be that complicated only that Creative.
When my students at Sherman Oaks Center would ask me about my life, I would tell them the truth, I
have changed career direction at least 4 times from the time I was 18, 50 years ago.
How can the rest of you do any different? Not Radical change, but biblical Change, The Hebrew says,
‘Hadesh Yamenu K’Kedem’ (Make our days New like they were long ago)! How could something from
long ago, be NEW ? Because long ago we were children, and anyone who knows anything about
children knows that children always discover the ’newness’ of doing things. So, bring to us the child in
you! Bring the exuberance, the laughter, the joy, the Amazement. Let us share the wonders of ‘youth’
with you whether it is the first youth or the second.
Remember on Rosh Hashanah when we begin reading and dreaming about how G-d created us, Act in
Imitatio Dei and Re-create a new you!
B’Ahava and Shanah Tova,
Rabbi Mark

President’s Message
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – September 2018
At the High Holidays, we see many people we have not seen in a while and we meet
newcomers. Perhaps they are drawn to synagogue by the pull of distant memories or
the awakening of dormant Jewish self-identity. Coinciding with the beginning of the
secular school year, this month is also the time of year when parents of young children
begin to think that maybe it is time to begin their children’s preparation for Bar or Bat
Mitzvah.
This is a time of year when Jews who have drifted away from active participation in the Jewish
community, at least for a time, return to their Jewish roots. In fact, the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur is known as Shabbat Shuvah, the “Shabbat of return.” The irony is that attendance at
services on Shabbat Shuvah is generally low. People have just spend an evening and morning at Rosh
Hashanah services and are facing an even longer set of services at Yom Kippur.
Many years ago, a Temple Board member found a study indicating that more American Jews observed
Hanukkah than the High Holidays, and that synagogues should thus focus their “recruiting” efforts at that
time of the year. In practice, however, it seems that the increase in Jewish observance gets packed
away along with the Hanukkiyah and the left-over candles. The High Holidays remain the time when
people feel the greatest personal need to be part of the Jewish Community, as well as the time they feel
the greatest obligation to support the Jewish Community.
It is the best time of the year for each of us to commit ourselves to greater involvement to and support of
Temple Beth Emet, the best time of the year to invite others to visit us and find their spiritual home, and
the best time for us to welcome those returning to Temple Beth Emet and those finding us for the first
time.
The High Holiday season begins the evening of Saturday, September 1 with Selichot services at 7:30
PM. At this service, our Torahs don their white covers, and prayers of penitence are recited to prepare
ourselves spiritually of the remainder of the season. Think of it as the beginning of a concert when the all
of the orchestra members tune their instrument to “A.”
A week later, on Sunday, September 9, our new Religious School year starts at 9:00 AM, and Rosh
Hashanah services begin that evening at 8:00 PM. What a great way to start the New Year! A new year
of learning begins in the morning, a new year of possibilities begins that evening.
The High Holiday season is full of joy and hope for the clergy, staff, and lay leadership at Temple Beth
Emet. It can also be hectic and stressful, with all sorts of details to attend to and issues to solve.
Sometimes the tension gets the better of us and we momentarily forget to acknowledge the rest of our
Temple community. So I take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support, encouragement, and
love over the past year. I apologize for any hurt or shortcoming any of us have given. And on behalf of
myself, my family, and those of us who strive to serve at Temple Beth Emet we wish all of the Temple
Beth Emet family tovah tikatevu," may it be a good and sweet year for all of

TEMPLE BETH EMET - HELP US KEEP GROWING
Help Us Keep Growing
This year marks the 60th Year Anniversary of Temple Beth Emet of Burbank! As we prepare for our upcoming anniversary celebration, we are busy with both improving and updating the Temple. While attendance for both our Religious School and newly opened Preschool have been thriving, we find ourselves having to deal with many building maintenance issues, due to heavy winds and rain of this past season. In order to keep up with the growth of our schools, we truly need more funding to complete our learning environments in a way that accommodates and welcomes our surrounding community. The following projects are currently in the works but we need your help to complete them. Projects in process: - The building & stocking of our third classroom - Refurbishing Blum Hall, our main gathering center - Water fountains for our children - Additional play equipment for the schools - Repaving of our parking lot - New ceiling tiles throughout due to water damage. Our goal is to raise $18,000 to achieve all of the improvements necessary to continue to provide a safe, quality, positive learning environment for our children, as well as our members of our congregation. The children are what makes this Temple special and it is our hope to provide them with the most positive experience possible. We chose the figure $18,000 to represent "Chai" which is the Hebrew word for "Life." Donations can be made via check or by going to our Temple Beth Emet – Face Book page & clicking on the link below: https://www.gofundme.com/kb8yn5-help-us-keep-growing?sharetype=teams&member=207948&rcid=r01-153012839128-2a9ac4812a174539&pc=ot_co_campmgmt_w
We thank you in advance for your help and look forward to seeing you at our 60th Year Celebration later this year! Shalom, Temple Beth Emet of Burbank President, Rabbi, Board of Directors & All Our Staff

Do You Have a Son and/or Daughter In College?
Temple Beth Emet has started a program to connect with our students attending a College. We would like to help
them to continue their Jewish way of life and offer them additional support. This way, they will always have an
open line of communication with our Rabbi, should they have questions or need direction; and we will remind them
of their link to Israel and to keep connected to the Jewish Community. After college, we hope to have them join
our Temple, as an adult.
Please send an e-mail and give me the following information:
The name of the Student;
Class Level;
Address;
Name of the University, and;
If the Student is a member of any organization or club on campus.
The Temple will send a care-package for each holiday, as a gift to the Student with a calendar of events at the
Temple for each month. The Student will be invited to all events sponsored by the Temple. We would like to
encourage the Student to return to the Temple as often as they wish; as the Temple would like to offer itself as a
second home and place of Jewish learning. I look forward hearing from you!
