OLD VEHICLE CLUB
BANBRIDGE
It’s hard to believe as I write this report only
one Summer Run remains. End of Season Run
organised by Reg Bell on National Heritage Day.
My thanks to all our committee members who
worked hard organising all our Summer Runs and
evening activities.
The Committee already have in place
arrangements for some of our indoor Winter Club
Nights.
Congratulations to David and Bronagh Lauro
on their marriage. Several of our committee
members attended what was a very pleasant
and entertaining day. At the end of the wedding
ceremony a 4 cylinder MV AUGUSTA was put on
display and started up courtesy of David Crawford.
This motor cycle was previously owned by David
Lauro’s Grandfather.
A large number of our members took part in the
Waringstown event which would be the biggest
local display and cavalcade.Our Treasurer/
President Reg Bell
drove the Lord
Mayor around the
route in his Rolls
Royce and there
was even a guard
of honour for the
Mayor and his
Chauffer at the Dunkirk road. The event raised
£10,025.00 for Kidney Research.
I would like to express my personal sympathy to
Ronnie Burney who has lost two sisters recently
and assure him our thoughts are with him in his
time of bereavement.
I look forward to seeing you all at our Winter Club
Night Meetings and thanks again to Sheila and her
helpers who faithfully provide the refreshments
for these meetings.

KILBRONEY CLASSIC CAR SHOW
BRONTE RUN
Saturday17th June 2017
Saturday 10th June 2017
On Saturday 17th June the
sun shone continuously from
early morning, this attracted
large numbers of entrants and
spectators. By mid morning
large queues had formed
in both directions from
Warrenpoint and Hilltown.
There was live music and
entertainment all day with a
large number of Auto Jumble
Stalls etc.
This event must now be one of the
biggest Classic Vehicle Events in the
whole of Ireland .
Thanks to Sheila, our Secretary who
booked a dedicated Club Stand for
all our members to park and this
year it was full to capacity.
Michael McKay, Reg Bell, David
Kinkaid and I went up on Thursday to
claim our pitch for the day. Thanks
also to Martin Geary for bringing our
Gazebo and helping to erect it on
site. We were all glad of it on the
day to shelter from the hot sun.
A good time was had by all with
Picnics and Barbecues being in
evidence all day.
Dennis Mitchell
Corrs Corner Hotel Newtownabbey was the
meeting point for some 17 cars of the Banbridge
Old Vehicle Club .Here we all met for tea, coffee
and scones followed by a catch up on the news
from our last meet. Sadly we learnt from Noel
McAree that his darling wife Elizabeth had
suffered a stroke and was presently in Oakridge
Nursing Home in Ballynahinch. We all send her
our love and best wishes, missing you already
or rather Noel is, we hope to see you out soon.
Another stalwart of the Club, Billy Ferguson has
had an operation and we all send our love and
best wishes to you and Millicent; hope you can
join us at future outings. After the pleasantry’s we
were all rounded up by our hosts for the day Andy
and Debbie Doran. From here we wound our way
through the countryside and the along the coast
road to Carnfunock Park which is situated on the
Antrim Coast Road .
The weather was very pleasant and after our
picnic some of us went walking to explore the
walled gardens and Maze and no one got lost.
Others enjoyed a coffee and the panoramic views
of the Antrim coast. A large group of people had
gathered to enjoy the pony gymkhana. I believe
a young lady was seen poaching , I do wonder
what Brendan gets served up for supper could it
be tadpoles or maybe frogs I believe this is the
new delicacy.
We ended the day with an 80th birthday
celebration for our dear friend Anne Gardiner
followed by a carvery meal.
Many thanks must go to our hosts and organisers
Andy and Debbie Doran.

BANBRIDGE OUTLET EVENT 2017
On Friday 3rd June well over 300 old vehicles participated in the Outlet event and cavalcade. A vast
and varied display was viewed by a large number of spectators in the Outlet car park. The Military
Vehicle Club put on a large and interesting display of old Army Vehicles.
Our thanks to the Outlet Management Team who provided us with premises to serve refreshments
and use of an Office to book in the participants on arrival. They also financed the prizes for the best
prepared Vehicles on display. The Perpetual Trophy provided by Outlet Management was won by Trevor
Crothers in an MGTD. Thanks must go to David Lauro who provided a cup for the winner to keep.
Recognition must be given to the Marshalls who controlled the arrival and parking of the vehicles very
efficiently, in particular I would personally thank John and Helen Mercer.
A special thanks to Andrew Carson and David Kinkaid for the erection and removal of signs advertising
the event which contributes greatly to the large turn out at the event. Thanks to Billy Ferguson for
supplying his Riley for display at the Outlet 1 week in advance of the event.
The Deputy Lord Mayor of ABC Council, Paul Greenfield very kindly spent part of the evening inspecting
the vehicles on display and Jim Black drove him round the Cavalcade in his Rolls Royce.
Thanks to the Ulster Aviation Society for putting on display their full size Replica Spitfire Fighter Plane,
this was a big attraction at the event.
Iris would like to thank the ladies who worked hard on the day. Sheila and Valerie who did an excellent
job manning the booking in office. Our “No ticket No Tea” lady Maureen who collects the Tea tickets
at the door and Elly, Betty, Hilary, Myreve, Georgie and our new helper this year Bronagh who made
sure everyone was served supper. A special thanks to Martin Geary who single handed set up all the
tables and chairs.
We would again like to thank the whole team for their help and co-operation in making the 2017
Outlet Event such a success.

OLD VEHICLE CLUB
BANBRIDGE
T.T. RUN Saturday 1st July 2017
Twenty four cars assembled
at Woodlawn Garden Centre.
On arrival Valerie Neill welcomed us and provided us with a sheet of minute details
which John and She had prepared, and a little treat, a bag of sweets. The time we spent in the restaurant
having enjoyed tea, coffee and scones was also an opportunity to reminisce about bygone days and
compare experience with present cars. It was also an opportunity for the ladies to do a little shopping.
At 11.30 am the cavalcade moved off for the first section of the route. This brought us through lovely
countryside which to many was a new experience. We passed through Ballygowan, Comber, Newtownards
and on arrival at Millisle we made our first stop for the traditional picnic.
Rested and fortified we set off on the next section of the run that would take us to Gannaway Heritage
Centre, a place well known to members of the Boys Brigade. Our visit there was most interesting and
I would suggest it would be well worth
a visit by anyone. To brouse around the
displays or watch a film telling the history
of the B.B. There is also a section telling the
story of the Titanic. I was amazed to read
that she used 825 tons of coal every 24
hours. On leaving the Heritage Centre we
passed through Ballywalter, Ballyhalbert,
Portavogie, Cloughey, Portaferry and
Kircubbin which brought us to Harrison’s
Garden Centre for our evening meal which
was enjoyed by everyone.
Many thanks to John and Valerie Neill for
a well organised and most enjoyable run
and to everyone for their friendship.
Jim Stewart
Stanley Woods Run
On Saturday 12th August,
twenty-two cars and over forty
people assembled at Bannside
Presbyterian Church, Banbridge
for the 2017 Stanley Woods Run.
We were warmly welcomed by
members of the congregation
and very much enjoyed their
hospitality. The tea, coffee,
scones and pancakes provided a
pleasant start to our day.
We departed from Banbridge
at 11am and followed a scenic
route through Ballyroney to
Rathfriland and Hilltown. We
enjoyed beautiful views of
the Mourne countryside. Our
route continued to Rostrevor,
passing Kilbroney Park and
then following the shore of
Carlingford Lough to the
lunchtime stop at Cranfield.
Reserved parking had been
arranged close to the beach.
Picnic lunches were enjoyed,
initially in bright sunshine, and
although dark clouds gathered
overhead no rain fell to spoil
the occasion. After lunch many
members had a walk along
the beach with views across
the lough to Greenore and the
Cooley Mountains.
At 2pm we departed, taking a
short route on country roads
to the home of Joe and Marie
Boden, close to Kilkeel. Joe
and Marie have an extensive
collection of agricultural and
military memorabilia from the
surrounding area. Their museum,
named ‘Olden Days and Olden
Ways’ was formed over fifteen
years ago. Joe provided us
with an informative guided
tour detailing in particular the
history of the nearby World
War II American airfield. At the
conclusion of our visit, Joe and
Marie were presented with a
BOVC plaque and a donation
for the charity supported by
the museum – Southern Area
Hospice Services.
The final leg of our journey
followed a coastal route
via Kilkeel and Annalong to
Newcastle. The run ended with
a meal at the Burrendale Hotel.
Our thanks go to Robert
Dalzell and Ken McDevitte for
organising a most enjoyable day.
We look forward to the next club
outing.

On Tuesday 30th May thirty members of Banbridge Old Vehicle Club attended the Somme Museum and
were given a guided tour. It was here that men of the 36th division were trained in preparation for the
Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916. This was part of the Clandebuoy Estate. The museum has a mock
up of the trenches built to show what life was like for soldiers at the front.
I think most people found these mock ups very interesting. We were then shown a film depicting what
the battlefield was tike
on the 1st July 1916.
After this we were
served with tea/ coffee
and scones which
ended a very enjoyable
night.
Thanks to Dennis
Mitchell for organising
this event.

MAY CLUB NIGHT - TUESDAY 30TH MAY 2017
VISIT TO THE SOMME HERITAGE CENTRE
We had about 30 people and 13 cars turn up to
our June Club night on 27th June it was hosted by
the High Sherriff of Belfast Alderman Tom Haire.
The cars drew an enormous amount of attention
from people visiting the grounds in front of the
City Hall, some who were tourists and some
wanted their picture taken in or beside the cars.
After spending time talking to the people gathered
we moved inside the City Hall to meet up with the
High Sherriff. He spoke about the history of the
City and the City Hall in particular and we had an
explanation as to who was in the large portraits
followed by a short question and answer session
we then had our refreshments supplied by the
High Sherriff.

We then proceeded for a short tour of the City

It is a reflection of Old Belfast at a cost of £1.3
miHion. The exhibition divides into 6 themes of
the City, it was like a trip down memory lane for
some of us whilst others would probably would
never have seen Belfast so depicted. Artefacts
from the Home Rule Period were on display on the
original table used for signing the Utster Covenant.
After spending some time at the City Hall we left I
hope with some knowledge of how far Belfast has
come into the 21at century.

JULY CLUB NIGHT Tuesday 25th July 2017
On the evening of 25th July we held our July meeting at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park where some
twenty seven cars and their occupants assembled.
It was a mild, dry evening, just perfect for wandering round the park enjoying the great variety of roses
grown here.
Unfortunately our cars were not displayed in their usual location beside Wilmont House due to a double
booking so we had to be content with a wooded and grassed area along the main driveway. However
most folk managed to stroll around the rose garden ending our evening with tea, coffee, lovely scones
and shortbread. This was organised by Sheila Adair and her band of willing helpers.
Our thanks go to all the people who planned this pleasant evening event.
Ann R Gardiner

Some twenty five members and
friends in their cars gathered
at the Texaco Service Station
at Upper Ballinderry . From
here we went in two groups to
Sandy Bay where we picked up
our boat, the Island Warrior, for
a short crossing to Rams Island
in Lough Neagh. Our skipper
and guide for the evening was
Michael Savage, a member
of the group tasked with the
preservation of this island.
He explained how this island
owned by the O’Neill family
was a mere six acres in size
before the water level in Lough
Neagh was lowered by two and
a half feet, to prevent flooding
on the land surrounding the
lough. This resulted in the island
AUGUST CLUB NIGHT – TUESDAY 29TH AUGUST 2017
VISIT TO RAMS ISLAND IN LOUGH NEAGH
growing to some twenty acres
in size.
Michael led our party round the
island explaining the features of
the habitat, birds and animals
that occupy the island. On our
way round the island he pointed
out engravings on the trees cut
out by the American and Belgian
troops who occupied the island
during the war when it was used
as a base for flying boats which
were delivering crucial parts
for the numerous flying boats
which were based around Lough
Neagh. He also explained the
history of the tower and house,
the remains of which still exist
despite having been constructed
hundreds of years ago.
At the end of the tour we all
gathered in the barge where
the ladies of the club provided
supper of tea, coffee, scones
with jam and cream and biscuits.
Thanks to Sheila and her band of
helpers for this enjoyable repast.
Our Chairman Dennis Mitchell
thanked Michael Savage for his
very enjoyable trip and tour of
the island after which we were
all shipped back to the mainland.
Thanks to Dennis and Iris
Mitchell for organising such an
enjoyable evening.
