A Message from Our Senior Pastor
September is here and so is the “back to…” season. You know — back to school; back to work; back to
routine. Some would like a few more weeks of summer play, while others are ready to get back into their
regular schedules. Our perspectives may vary on summer coming to a close, but the calendar page must be
turned, and with it comes the opportunities of a new month and season.
For some, September is back to church month. Travel, sports, schedule changes, and a variety of other
things have kept many away over the last several weeks. September 4th we return to our regular Sunday
morning schedule of Sunday School at 9:45 and worship at 11. It’s a great time to get back to Sunday School
classes, and to gather from all the different places we have been to worship together.
Thanks to everyone who helped make our August Sundays at Westwood such a blessing. From special
music to the continuing conversations in worship and fellowship to the delicious food and warm encounters
after worship in Whitten Hall, we experienced a great time together over these four Sundays. August is a
good memory…now what does September hold?
Church Family Night kicks off Wednesday, September 7 with an All-American cookout of hamburgers,
hotdogs, and all the fixins’. We will sing together, play together, and pray together as we begin a new CFN
year. So call the church office or use the communication card in this Sunday’s bulletin to make your
reservation. Seminars and age-graded activities will return on the 14th. On Sunday, September 18, Leena
Lavanya will be with us to share an update from our ministry partner ServeTrust. She will speak with our
children in FunDay School, touch base with our youth, and preach in our morning worship service. What a
treat to have her with us!! Day/Night Bible Studies, Women on a Mission, Weekend Food Pack ministry, and
the Women’s Bible Study will all begin anew, and September 25 will be Music Ministry Dedication Sunday.
September will provide a great start to the new church year and new opportunities for us to share together
the ministry Christ has called us to at Westwood.
Please note in this edition of the Westwood World the notification of a called church conference for
September 4, immediately after worship. We will hear a report from the Nominating Committee as well as a
recommendation from the Personnel Committee that Will Clapp be called as Interim Minister With Youth. Will
has served faithfully through the summer months and will continue to guide our youth ministry in the near
future as the search continues for someone to fill the vacant Minister With Youth position. We have been
blessed to have Will among us through the summer months and will look forward to his leadership if he is
approved in the called conference.
So, as the summer months draw to a close and fall is on the horizon, what will you get back to? Yes, our
schedules will call us back to the familiar, and things left behind will now become front and center once more.
Perhaps we all could consider anew our relationship with the One whose hands created us, whose heart
redeemed us, and whose Spirit continues now to move among us. In this back to season, may our first and
greatest steps lead us back to a growing relationship with God.

ECHO Needs in September
This month ECHO needs donations of children’s
winter coats, boys’ jeans sizes 6-18, towels in good
condition, and working sewing machines. The ECHO
food pantry needs dried beans, cooking oil, jelly, bags
of rice, juice, tissues, shaving cream, toothbrushes, and
child and/or adult over-the-counter pain medicines.
ECHO, located at 7205 Old Keene Mill Road, is open
to receive donations on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. or from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday
or Thursday; or you can leave your donations in the
grey bin across from the church office.

Community Involvement
It’s Not Easy Being Green
. . .but we are making progress at Westwood! You may
not have noticed, but fluorescent bulbs are being
replaced with LED bulbs, smart thermostats have been
installed, and more recycle bins have been placed
around the church. You may notice in September when
we start using eco-friendly paper goods. We will have
hot cups made from post-consumer recycled materials,
and biodegradable and recyclable plates and cold cups.
We think that these efforts further Westwood’s
commitment to our community and God’s creation.
You may see an occasional Styrofoam item as we
deplete our stock, but we hope you will enjoy the new
products that Westwood is committed to.

Women of Westwood on a Mission to
Serve God by Serving Others
As we are about to begin a new program year, we
would first like to thank all the ladies who faithfully
worked on our Little Dresses for Liberia project over
the summer. We completed more than 110 dresses!! On
Saturday, Sept. 17, we are invited to join the women’s
mission group at Greenbrier Baptist Church to hear
from the missionaries to Liberia who will be taking all
of these cute dresses home with them. It will be
wonderful to hear first-hand about the community they
serve and the children who will be wearing the dresses.
Please put this date on your calendar. There will be
more information about this in a few weeks.
The Women of Westwood and Friends will be meeting
on Wednesday, Sept. 7 in Whitten Hall at 10 a.m. for
the start of another year of mission work in our
community, our state, our nation, and our world. Invite
a friend or neighbor to join you while we learn more
about missions in this world and work on projects to
benefit many others. It only requires two hours a month
to make a big difference in others’ lives. Child care can
be provided with prior notice. See you on the 7th!

differences in translation affect our understanding of the Bible.
This four-session seminar begins on Sept. 14 and will be led by
Randa Gray. Aviya Kushner’s book The Grammar of God will
provide the framework for our discussion. We’ll look at the
richness and nuance of the original Hebrew text and we’ll

Day/Night Study Begins Our Day/Night Bible studies will
begin again Sept. 19 and 20 and will
meet for six sessions. Dr. Abernathy
will lead the Monday morning
group at 10 a.m. in Whitten Hall,
and Rev. Gray will lead the
Tuesday evening group at 7 p.m. in
Room 17-19.
Our first study will focus on the
book of Acts and the first followers of Christ. We’ll use
the book The Story Continues by J. Ellsworth Kalas. In
this book, Kalas follows the first body of believers after
Jesus’ death and resurrection and shows us how we can
use their examples as a guide for our own present-day
ministry as believers.
Sign up for this first study at the Welcome Center.
Books are available for a cost of $5. Day/Night Bible
studies offer great opportunities to grow in faith
through the study of God’s word. Feel free to invite
someone to join the study with you.
Women’s Bible Study On Wednesday, September 21, we will begin a seven-
session Bible study called Anointed, Transformed,
Redeemed: A Study of David. The popular and dynamic
Bible teachers and authors Priscilla Shirer, Beth Moore,
and Kay Arthur will use incidents in David’s life to
bring lessons for our lives today. Each teacher will
provide two DVD sessions followed
by lessons in the study book. Class
discussions are always helpful.
Ladies, please join us each
Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11:45,
except the first Wednesdays
(Women on a Mission). Just sign up
and pick up your $10 study book at
the Welcome Center in September. Let Mary Shuman
know if you desire child care. Come enjoy the
fellowship and grow along with us.

Recommendation to Call Will Clapp
as Interim Minister With Youth
In a called church conference at the close of morning
worship September 4, the Personnel Committee will
recommend that Rev. Will Clapp be called to serve as
Interim Minister With Youth.
Will is a native Texan, a graduate of Hardin-Simmons
University with a B.A. in Bible, and a graduate of
Logsdon Seminary with a Masters of Divinity. He has
served churches in Texas, as well as in Bali, and as a
chaplain resident. He and his wife, Meg, live in Falls Church, and she serves as
Pastor to Youth and Young Adults at McLean Baptist Church.
Will has served through the summer as Youth Intern at Westwood and been a
blessing to our youth and church. We are grateful for his leadership and his
willingness to assist us during this interim time. Please pray for Will, our youth,
and the Personnel Committee as the search continues for the position of Minister
With Youth.
