On Saturday, 3rd September 2016 an awareness and training programme was organised for the villagers of Potkhal and Baste.

We, along with the staff of NIRID, had planned out this event to train and create awareness on using family toilets instead of defecating outdoors. This will provide a clean environment for children to play in as well as prevent water pollution which in turn reduces the chances of water-borne diseases resulting in overall hygiene and growth.

The advocacy and training programme was designed with simple illustrations and colourful paintings to emphasise health and hygiene, cleanliness and dignity to the girl child and women. We also instructed them on how to keep the toilets clean without using chemical cleaning agents which harm the ecosystem. The importance of washing hands with soap after using the toilet and before taking meals, and imparting the habit to children were other focus areas.

We found that NIRID and the village committee had worked at the grass-roots level to educate and create awareness, which resulted in enthusiastic villagers attending the programme in large numbers, with each one of them now keen on having their own family toilet!

We also identified the problems faced by the villagers of bringing water from distant wells as well as storing the water. As a result we are offering 100 litres of water to the villagers at a subsidised rate.

President Sucharita Hegde and PP R.P. Anand inaugurated the last phase of the construction of family toilets under our Global Grant 1635575.

Sad DemiseRtn PDG Suresh Rathod joined Rotary Club of Mumbai Mid-West in 1984 and was elected as the Club’s President in 1987-88. He collected $51,000 for The Rotary Foundation, which was 17 times his Club’s target!

He served as District Governor in 2001–02. As a Governor, he added 1400 new members and 16 new clubs for District 3140. He adopted 125 schools, the highest ever in District 3140, and organised a District Conference with the lowest registration fee of `500 which attracted an attendance of 3,200 people, a record high.

For his professional contributions he received the Udyog Ratna Award. A dedicated family man, Rtn PDG Suresh Rathod established a charitable foundation for several

community service projects in a short span of six months.

He will be remembered for his dedication, commitment and time management.

We, Mid-Towners express our heartfelt condolences and pray for his soul to rest in peace.

Our Keynote Speaker on Wednesday, 31st August and TV, theatre and film artiste - the beautiful, vivacious and lively Tanaaz Irani was accompanied by Priya Malik, a Big Boss 2015 finalist and a Big Brother 2014 contestant.

Tanaaz spoke from the heart – about the challenges faced by an actor on stage, TV and in films. “The charm and glamour is only on the screen but what one cannot see behind is a totally different world”. Tanaaz was very frank. She poured her heart out and with great panache spilled the beans on the real life of an actor and the great challenges faced.

Mid-Towners appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed the address.

The service ideal began taking shape during the early period, when Arthur Frederick Sheldon joined the Chicago club. As a teacher of the new at Rotary’s first convention in 1910, he proposed that “He profits most who serves his fellows best”. The next year another of Rotary’s early leaders, Benjamin Franklin Collins, also spoke about the importance of serving others and promoted the idea that a club should be organised on the principle of “service, not self”. The two sayings, modified to “He profits most who serves best” and “Service above self”, were quickly embraced by all Rotarians and became proud slogans on Rotary Clubs’ escutcheons. But 40 years passed before they were officially designated as Rotary mottoes – at the 1950 Convention in Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Many Rotarians believe that one way of accomplishing this in their day-to-day working lives is to apply The 4-Way Test, developed by Herbert J. Taylor, R.I. President in 1954-55. It can be applied to all four avenues of service – and to virtually all areas of life – but it fits into vocational service better than anywhere else.

Service above self

Dear Rotarians We are exploring the possibilities of organising a special health check-up for the Mumbai Police. The master health package costs `4,500/- out of which we, at Saifee Hospital, would bear `2,500. The remaining `2,000 would need to be organised by the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town. We plan to cover 150 police officers under this community development project for the Mumbai Police. The total budget for Rotary would be `2,000 x 150 police officers = `3,00,000 Kindly let us know if any Rotarian would like to sponsor in full or in part. Suitable mileage would be extended to the sponsor or co-sponsor.

Rotarians visit KMDSB

Rtn President Sucharita Hegde, accompanied by a few Rotarians, visited the Kamla Mehta Dadar School for the Blind (KMDSB) on Wednesday, 14th September. Also in attendance was Ms. Kanchan, Head of the CSR department of our Corporate Co-Sponsors and Partner-in-Service M/s Fuchs Lubricants India (Pvt.) Ltd. Ms. Kanchan represented Rtn Kersi Hilloo, MD & CEO of Fuchs Lubricants and Chairman of the Child Welfare Committee of RCBMT. The delegation was escorted to the office of the Director of KMDSB, Mrs. Ajgaonkar who welcomed the visitors.

The objective of the visit was twofold:a) To understand the disbursement of the `2 lakh donated by RCBMT, andb) The requirement for the request of an additional `1 lakh to be donated by Fuchs Lubricants.

This was discussed by Rtn. Pres. Sucharita with Mrs. Ajgaonkar. Thereafter, Ms. Kanchan handed over a cheque of `1 lakh to Mrs. Ajgaonkar in presence of President Sucharita Hegde and visiting Rotarians.

Mrs. Ajgaonkar was thankful for the continued support from RCBMT and also from the Corporate Co-sponsor M/s Fuchs Lubricants.

KMDSB is the only institution of its kind in Maharashtra which caters exclusively to visually challenged girls. At its vast premises in Dadar, it has several departments to educate these students in different academic and vocational subjects. It has over 165 students on its roll, as of now, with hostel facilities as well.

AN OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES OF THE INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS COMMITTEE, ROTARY CLUB OF BOMBAY MID-TOWN

news

The International Projects Committee has been very active since the last twenty years and has carried out various projects along with many international partner Rotaries.

This was made possible by the stupendous effort and leadership of PP Rtn Arrow Sinha Roy. All the Mid-Towners appreciated his communication skill, hard work and leadership. Rtn Arrow’s sudden demise created a great vacuum. There were many projects which were half finished.

I am happy to say that all the Rotarians of our Club decided to support, work hard and pool our resources together to keep up the good work done by Rtn Arrow Sinha Roy and continue his legacy.

We have since then successfully completed and closed the following projects: MG # 71045 Nutrition, Educational & Adult Literacy inputs at Potkhal/BasteMG # 71452 Watershed Development Project (Phase I)- Kegva villageGG # 25795 Vocational Training Centre at Ramakrishna Mission, SakwarGG # 253399 Building a Future for Mumbai’s Street Children DDF District 7980 Connecticut Rotary Clubs funded 30 family toilets at Baste village

Advocacy programme is underway. We have compiled a list of beneficiaries as per priority criterion. Construction of toilets will start by middle of September. We plan to complete the project by June 2017.

GG1743476 SANITATION PROJECT BUILDING FAMILY TOILETS IN VILLAGES AROUND PANVEL IN MAHARASHTRA We have submitted an application to the Rotary Foundation under TRF GIFT scheme for building 444 toilets in villages around Panvel, Maharashtra. This project is in association with Chakshu Foundation. We have done many projects with Chakshu Foundation, a trust managed by our Club’s most active member and philanthropist Rtn. Nirbhay Jain. This project will be supervised by an NGO, Swayamsiddha Gramin Mahila Sangh, a village women's self-help group. It is a very successful federation of about 1500 village women supported by our Club and Chakshu Foundation.

Installation Function of The Interact Club of Walsingham School

We started with creating awareness among village women about the importance of providing good nutrition and child health care with focus on prevention of malnutrition among children between age of five months and five years.

We also hold medical camps, provide medical aid and an intensive eight-week treatment to malnourished children, provide daily nutrition supplement to all the children for one year and hold Effect Monitoring Camps every four months to review the effect on children’s health for future corrective action.

Future Projects

GLOBAL GRANTS PROJECT LITTLE HEARTS PAEDIATRIC SURGERIES FOR THE POOR AND THE UNDERPRIVILEGED RESIDING IN SLUMS IN AND AROUND MUMBAI District 3141 is a major initiator in trying to address this problem, along with Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai. They have set up the programme for paediatric surgery with proper pre- and post-surgery care. The hospital has joined hands with Rotary Clubs of our district. The hospital is subsidising the cost by 50% and with our Global Grant funding, we will provide the service to underprivileged children at no cost.

Our District Governor has reached out to our Club to make this a high-impact project for the district. The DG has agreed to contribute out of his district designated fund. Our Club has committed to $30,000 which is being donated by our Club member Rtn Dr. Prakash Mody.

We are looking for at least three other international partners who could contribute $15,000 each. We will apply for a Global Grant once we get the contribution from international partner Rotaries. With this effort, if we do succeed, we could conduct almost 100 cardiac surgeries for children.
