Thoughts from the Women’s Retreat

During the Women’s Retreat “Spiritual Indulgence in

a Time of Change” held August 23, 2015, our leader,

Diana Mitchell, asked us to reflect on the disciples’

feelings on the Saturday after the crucifixion of Jesus.

What were their thoughts after Good Friday before they

knew of His resurrection on Easter Sunday?

Diana invited us to clear the path through our own

doubts and confusions so that we can hear God speak to

us. She reminded us to talk to God about our concerns.

( She asked us to think how we feel when people

talk about us rather than to us.) God craves our time

of quiet communion with him!

In the realm of spiritual growth, there are no plateaus.

We have the choice during our “Saturday times” to

either regress or move forward “living the questions” as

we seek creative solutions and new beginnings.

New Prayer Box in Sanctuary Our new candle prayer box was created by Bob

Reynolds for the Women's Retreat. If you wish to light a

candle and leave a prayer request you may do so during

meditative times during the service. (During the

prelude, offering or during communion)

The box is located inside the sanctuary by the main

entrance.

Meditation and Yoga Classes Here at Church Linda Green, certified Sivananda Yoga

instructor of Omnigreen Yoga, will be

leading Yoga classes on Thursdays from

September 10 through November 19,

6:00-7:00 PM. Cost is $10.00 per week

for walk-ins. This a combination level class. Bring a mat,

wear lose comfy clothing, and bring straps or props if

you choose. Don’t eat prior to class. Relieve stress

through proper stretching, breathing and relaxation.

Tone your body, as you build energy. Alleviate physical

tension including backaches. Strengthen your body and

mind. Linda Green will also be leading a meditation class

before the yoga class 5:30- 5:55. It will be free will

offering to the church instead of a fee for the meditation

class.

For questions contact Linda at 419-635-2337 or

email at [email protected].

Linus Update: In one small group during the recent women’s retreat,

we were talking about activities for women in the

church. Someone mentioned that she thought that Linus

Quilters were a closed group. Most folks know that the

Linus Quilters are a group of women who prepare quilts

and blankets to go to the Akron Children’s Hospital. Not

all of the women belong to our church. We welcome

women who are interested in sewing quilts, fringing

fleece blankets, or crocheting coverlets. The group

meets the second and fourth Tuesday mornings in the

home of Maxine Wilson. (In September the group will

meet at the home of Connie Brand; watch for

announcements in the bulletin.) Some women who work

or travel may choose to work on their own and

contribute the quilts when they can. All are welcome to

help prepare these warm tangible blessings for hurting

and ill children.

Preschool News It is very hard to believe that August and summer are almost over and that autumn is upon us! We have had a very

busy month learning, playing, and getting our classroom ready for a new school year. We have made the most of the

end of summer by spending as much Time outside as possible. We did units on Transportation, Community Helpers,

Outer space, and Circus. We also had several visitors this month.

Mr. Ed Bettendorf read us a story from the Bible about the King of Beasts. He brought along a 15 foot Alligator that

he constructed himself.

Mr. "Banjo Bob" Wilson played the Banjo for us. The kids

enjoyed singing and dancing along. They sang "Peace Like a

River," "Kumbaya," and "Micheal Row Your Boat Ashore." We

can't wait for him to come play for us again! "

Coach" Coffin has been helping us learn about personal space

while moving to fast and slow rhythms.

Mrs. D read Camp Rex by Molly Idle. At the end of the story we were greeted by a Ms. Lauren-a-saurus! The kids

loved stomping and roaring around the building with her!

We held our annual Open House and Parent Meeting.

We loved seeing so many new and returning smiling faces!

Our first day of Preschool is September 8th!!

We are celebrating our last week of summer with a crazy week.

Each day of the week will have a different silly theme!!

Psalm 133:1 says, “How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!” It certainly is a

pleasant thought. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always seems like a very realistic hope. All to often there is dissention and

disunity groups of whatever kind, even within families. We often talk about the church as being a family, without

recognizing that families are frequently places of intense fighting and hostility. Certainly the church at large has

known more than its share of disunity from the very earliest days. The writings of Paul indicate the divisions in the

early church. Then, as time went by, major splits occurred, first between the Eastern and Western churches, today

knows as Orthodox churches and Roman Catholicism. About 500 – 600 years ago came our favorite split, which we

call the Protestant Reformation. By no means did that end the dividing process. Today we have thousands and

thousands of Protestant denominations. That process is by no means over. Any time a Christian gets mad at another,

it seems we just might be looking at a new denomination, or at least a new independent church.

As I suppose everyone knows, our denomination, the Presbyterian Church (USA) has seen more than its share of

conflict and controversy. Lately the church has been wracked with pain, bloodshed, and schism. Many individuals and

congregations have concluded they could no longer continue to fellowship with the PCUSA. Sadly, there doesn’t seem

to be any end in sight to the misery.

Sometimes conflict is a good thing. Sometimes out of conflict and controversy growth occurs, and sometimes even

pain can turn out to be birth pains as something entirely new comes into being. We can’t know for sure until we are

able to look back at all that happened. In the meantime, the pain is, well, painful. And it is especially painful in church

life when it comes to the local congregation, when people who have loved each other and worshipped and served

together for years find themselves on the opposite sides of very polarizing issues. This has certainly been the case

with Firelands Presbyterian Church. Even though nothing has happened locally to bring certain issues to the fore, the

conflict has presented itself. Some have left the fellowship of the church, weakening its ministry and mission and no

doubt making it difficult for those who have left to find once again the kind of intimate fellowship they knew at FPC. It

is tragic. And, the conflict remains alive. There are intense feelings on both sides of the major issues which threaten

further the ability of the congregation to remain totally together. Further tragic results may await us. If more people

leave, regardless of their positions, the church will find itself perhaps unable to afford to call a new minister. Even if

that does not happen, how do you find a minister willing to step into the difficult situation caused by the conflict? Is it

fair to hide the reality of the situation from a potential new pastor? How do you attract new members when the

church is in conflict? What kind of church is this, anyway? These are very significant questions.

As difficult as it is to acknowledge, FPC is a church in conflict. It is vital that it confronts that reality, and finds a way,

one way or another, to deal with that conflict in order to effectively move into the future. I don’t have a ready-made

solution to the problem. Perhaps no one from the outside can provide the answers. More than likely if answers are to

be foiund the church will have to provide them. Whatever, perhaps the best place possible from which to begin would

be to commit absolutely to “living together in unity.” How “good and pleasant” that would be.
